Shaping the future of nanomedicine: anisotropy in polymeric nanoparticle design.

Nanofabrication and biomedical applications of polymeric nanoparticles have become important areas of research. Biocompatible polymeric nanoparticles have been investigated for their use as delivery vehicles for therapeutic and diagnostic agents. Although polymeric nanoconstructs have traditionally been fabricated as isotropic spheres, anisotropic, nonspherical nanoparticles have gained interest in the biomaterials community owing to their unique interactions with biological systems. Polymeric nanoparticles with different forms of anisotropy have been manufactured using a variety of novel meth

Reliability of fractional anisotropy measurement for children with cerebral palsy.

OBJECTIVE: Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is the leading cause of disability in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging technique for detecting microstructural lesions of white matter. Fractional anisotropy (FA) is a widely used DTI index with clinical significance in children with CP. This study aims to estimate the reliability of FA for children with CP. DESIGN: Four observers measured FA values in 78 children with spastic CP from PVL. Region of interests (ROIs) were placed in three anatomical loci at each side: medial and latera

Differential fractional anisotropy abnormalities in adolescents with ADHD or schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are associated with similar deficits in working memory, attention, and inhibition. Both disorders also involve abnormalities of white matter integrity, possibly reflecting neural communication disruptions. There are likely some regional white matter abnormalities that underlie the common cognitive impairment, though also some regional abnormalities unique to each disorder. We used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to compare white matter integrity, as indicated by fractional anisotropy (FA), in adolescents with schizophrenia (n=15)

Anisotropy in the representation of direction preferences in cat area 18.

Higher visual cortical areas are involved in the perception of complex stimuli, such as the optic flow created by self-motion. On the other hand, area 18 is thought to extract primitive visual features, feeding higher cortical areas for further processing. In this study, we applied optical imaging of intrinsic signals in the central, lower visual field of cat area 18, and reconstructed direction preference and direction selectivity maps in each hemisphere. We observed a significant overrepresentation of downward and temporal directions, in accordance with previous electrophysiological results.

Microstructural Anisotropy in Bone-Mimetic Silk Constructs Promotes Self-Mineralization.

Understanding how organic matrix architecture regulates biomineralization remains a central challenge in mineralized tissue regeneration. Emerging evidence highlights the importance of coupled phenomena, including nanoconfinement, ionic and pH regulation, and hierarchical structural remodeling, in directing mineral formation. Silk fibroin (SF) is a versatile structural protein widely used in biomaterials due to its tunable mechanics, scalable processing into micro- and nanoscale constructs, controllable biodegradation, and ability to support cell infiltration and tissue integration, including

Correlating EPR Parameters With Structural Anisotropy in Cu(II) Complexes.

Quantum chemical calculations offer a legitimate interpretation of EPR parameters and thus helps to correlate the geometry and spectral feature of open-shell molecules. Herein, two pseudo-octahedral Cu(II) systems, one with rhombic and the other with axial symmetry, are chosen as representative systems to understand the electronic structure origin of their spectroscopic behavior. The spin Hamiltonian parameters, g-tensor and hyperfine coupling constant, are computed in the platform of the Density Functional and wave function-based theories. Emphasis is given to explain the shift in the free el

Anisotropy-Aware Cellular Automaton Framework for AI-Powered Pterygium Screening.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore a weakly-labeled, positive-sample-free auxiliary diagnostic method for pterygium, providing an effective screening tool for primary healthcare institutions and self-examination. METHODS: An ocular surface anatomic atlas was initially constructed through semantic segmentation, and an improved cellular automaton method was used to simulate the characteristic anisotropic growth pattern of pterygium, thereby generating high-quality training samples. RESULTS: The proposed method effectively overcomes the dependency on professionally annotated data

Photomagnetic-Chiral Anisotropy Mediated by Chirality-Driven Asymmetric Spin Splitting.

Photomagnetic effects (PMEs), intrinsic to transition metals, arise from the interaction between light-induced angular momentum and electronic spin. These effects are suppressed in noble metals with high symmetry and electron density. Introducing chiral structures can induce photomagnetic-chiral anisotropy (PMChA) of metals by linking chirality and spin dynamics. However, a theoretical explanation remains elusive. Here, we investigated the mechanism of PMChA in tetrahelix-stacked chiral nanostructured Au chains (CNACs) using first-principles calculations. Nonequilibrium Green's function calcul

Reduced Fracture Anisotropy yet Enhanced Deformability of Multilayer MoS2 Straps.

The mechanical properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) in particular, are crucial for their reliable applications in advanced flexible electronics and phototransistors. This study systematically investigated the influence of geometrical factors on MoS2's mechanical property and fracture behavior by performing in situ tensile tests on submicroscale strap specimens with different thicknesses ranging from 7 to 95 nm inside SEM and TEM. Results demonstrated a strong correlation between the apparent fracture strength and Young's modulus

Lattice structure musculoskeletal robots: Harnessing programmable geometric topology and anisotropy.

Natural musculoskeletal systems combine soft tissues and rigid structures to achieve diverse mechanical behaviors that are both adaptive and precise. Inspired by these systems, we propose a programming method for designing bioinspired soft-rigid robotic structures using lattice geometries made from a single material. By introducing previously unknown approaches to the geometric design of unit cells within lattice structures-based on continuous blending and superposition of existing lattice geometries-we can precisely tune stiffness and anisotropy. These designs enable the creation of three-dim

Brief Adaptation to Astigmatism Reduces Meridional Anisotropy in Contrast Sensitivity.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of visual adaptation to orientation-dependent optical blur on meridional contrast sensitivity function in artificially imposed astigmatism. METHODS: The study adopted a top-up adapt-test paradigm. During the blur adaptation process, the 18 non-astigmatic young adult participants were briefly presented with natural scene images (first trial, 10 minutes; subsequent trials, 6 seconds). Contrast sensitivities for horizontal and vertical gratings at spatial frequencies ranging from 1 to 8 cycles per degree (cpd) were measured immediately before and after adaptati

Quantitative Assessment of Tendon Backscatter Anisotropy in B-Mode Ultrasound.

To test the anisotropy of human tendons in conventional B-mode ultrasound, we prospectively performed ultrasound scans of 40 normal patella tendons and 24 patella tendons with chronic tendinopathy in adults. We scanned all tendons in longitudinal orientation (parallel to tendon fibers) using a linear array transducer (8.5 MHz) with beam steering at 0°, 5°, 10°, 15° and 20°. We used ImageJ histogram analysis to process B-mode images offline for assessing backscatter as a function of angle, known as backscatter anisotropy, between normal tendons and the subcutaneous tissues and between normal te

Supercurrent diode effect and magnetochiral anisotropy in few-layer NbSe2.

Nonreciprocal transport refers to charge transfer processes that are sensitive to the bias polarity. Until recently, nonreciprocal transport was studied only in dissipative systems, where the nonreciprocal quantity is the resistance. Recent experiments have, however, demonstrated nonreciprocal supercurrent leading to the observation of a supercurrent diode effect in Rashba superconductors. Here we report on a supercurrent diode effect in NbSe2 constrictions obtained by patterning NbSe2 flakes with both even and odd layer number. The observed rectification is a consequence of the valley-Zeeman

Extending fluorescence anisotropy to large complexes using reversibly switchable proteins.

The formation of macromolecular complexes can be measured by detection of changes in rotational mobility using time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy. However, this method is limited to relatively small molecules (~0.1-30 kDa), excluding the majority of the human proteome and its complexes. We describe selective time-resolved anisotropy with reversibly switchable states (STARSS), which overcomes this limitation and extends the observable mass range by more than three orders of magnitude. STARSS is based on long-lived reversible molecular transitions of switchable fluorescent proteins to resolve

High Magnetic Anisotropy of a Square-Planar Iron-Carbene Complex.

Among Earth-abundant catalyst systems, iron-carbene intermediates that perform C-C bond forming reactions such as cyclopropanation of olefins and C-H functionalization via carbene insertion are rare. Detailed descriptions of the possible electronic structures for iron-carbene bonds are imperative to obtain better mechanistic insights and enable rational catalyst design. Here, we report the first square-planar iron-carbene complex (MesPDPPh)Fe(CPh2), where [MesPDPPh]2- is the doubly deprotonated form of [2,6-bis(5-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine]. Fractional Anisotropy changes in Parahippocampal Cingulum due to Alzheimer's Disease.

Current treatments for Alzheimer's disease are only symptomatic and limited to reduce the progression rate of the mental deterioration. Mild Cognitive Impairment, a transitional stage in which the patient is not cognitively normal but do not meet the criteria for specific dementia, is associated with high risk for development of Alzheimer's disease. Thus, non-invasive techniques to predict the individual's risk to develop Alzheimer's disease can be very helpful, considering the possibility of early treatment. Diffusion Tensor Imaging, as an indicator of cerebral white matter integrity, may det

Fractional anisotropy in patients with disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus (DESH) findings on MRI were described as a prognostic factor for responsiveness to the treatment of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). Our premise is that DESH could be associated with compression of the cerebral white matter. Microstructural changes can be identified using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), specifically fractional anisotropy (FA). The aim of this study is to compare FA in iNPH patients with and without DESH and healthy controls. METHODS: We analysed 1.5-T MRI scans of patients fulfilling the

Redox Switching of Magnetic Anisotropy in Copper(II) Verdazyl Systems.

Reaction of copper(II) triflate with 1-isopropyl-3,5-di(2'-pyridyl)-6-oxo-2H-tetrazine (dipyvdH) and triethylamine gave the neutral species [Cu(dipyvd)2]. [Cu(dipyvd)2] can be oxidized in two one-electron steps, leading to [Cu(dipyvd)2]+ and [Cu(dipyvd)2]2+ isolated as their PF6- salts. All three species are best formulated as copper(II) compounds with localized anionic diamagnetic, or neutral radical ligands. Exchange coupling between the neutral radical ligands and the copper(II) ion is strongly ferromagnetic, leading to S = 1 and S = 3/2 ground states for [Cu(dipyvd)2]+ and [Cu(dipyvd)2]2+,

Anisotropy, heterogeneity, and limited sex differences in aortic suture retention.

BACKGROUND: Suture-line complications following aortic graft repair can have life-threatening consequences. To mitigate the clinical risk of anastomotic dehiscence, vascular prostheses are evaluated using the suture retention test defined by ISO 7198:2016. While appropriate for synthetic grafts under controlled loading conditions, this standard does not account for the nonlinear, anisotropic, and heterogeneous mechanical behavior of native elastic arteries, their composite microstructure, or variability among animal models used in preclinical testing. METHODS: We applied ISO suture pull-to-fa
