Mandibular distraction in temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

Condylar damage during childhood can produce ankylosis and alteration of the mandibular growth. In case of unilateral ankylosis occurring in early childhood, a mandibular hypoplasia of the affected side may develop. The patients have limitation of mouth opening, facial asymmetry, and chin deviation toward the affected side. The aims of this study are to show the use of distraction osteogenesis in mandibular hypoplasia associated with ankylosis and to present our experience with a new therapeutic option for the treatment of mandibular hypoplasia with unilateral ankylosis in the childhood consis

Experimentally induced dentoalveolar ankylosis in rats.

Dentoalveolar ankylosis is a common complication after replantation of teeth with injured periodontal ligaments. This is a serious complication for the tooth since it leads to progressive root resorption. In young individuals it may also cause infra-occlusion and reduced development of the alveolar process. The purpose of this study was to develop a method applicable to rats in order to follow the effect of systemic and local factors on the development of ankylosis and their possible effect on the length of the functional period of the ankylosed tooth before exfoliation. The maxillary first mo

[The stiff hip (post-traumatic ankylosis)].

The partial or total ankylosis of the hip joint caused directly by an injury or indirectly as a consequence of a trauma is a severe and permanent handicap for the subject concerned. This is due to the fact that, because of its special position at the connection point between body and leg, a not functioning hip joint involves a permanent restriction in many fields of every-day life, above all at the working place, but also in private life. Not only the walking movement, but also the walking performance is restrained, and even the sitting capacity is disturbed, which also has unfavorable consequ

Carpal ankylosis in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Forty-seven of 100 consecutive juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patients with wrist arthritis were found to have ankylosis at the carpal joints. this finding was significantly more frequent in juvenile than in adult rheumatoid arthritis patients. The carpometacarpal wrist segment was the most frequently ankylosed. Ankylosis was not related to any particular feature of the disease, but disease duration was longer in patients with ankylosis. A significant association was found between carpal ankylosis and cervical apophyseal joint fusion.

Rehabilitating children with temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

Although the probability of ankylosis following injury of the temporomandibular joint is small, patients, especially children with temporomandibular joint ankylosis, are greatly handicapped. Of the 42 cases of ankylosis seen in our clinic, six occurred in the adult, and 36 in children under 14 years of age. Treatment in all cases was surgical, and the results were beneficial, although the greatest difficulty in the treatment had been the early recurrence of ankylosis. Based on our experience, osteoarthrotomy for temporomandibular joint ankylosis in children has been advocated.

Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis Surgery in Children.

PURPOSE: A variety of techniques have been described in the literature for the treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis. However, 1 of the factors most commonly related to the failure of maintenance mouth opening in the postoperative period is the inadequate excision of the ankylotic mass. Furthermore, the surrounding noble structures, such as the base of the skull, internal maxillary artery, and dental germs, are at risk of being affected during the procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this reason, prototyped guides have been proposed to steer osteotomies and resections of the ankylot

Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis: Algorithm of Treatment.

UNLABELLED: : Temporomandibular joint ankylosis, according to age of onset, causes severe functional and morphological disorders, as well as stunted craniofacial growth and development. The primary goal of treatment is to resolve the functional and morphological disorders. METHOD: Pre- and posttreatment clinical and cephalometric registries were conducted in 15 patients with temporomandibular joint ankylosis over a 10-year period (2002-2012). All the patients underwent complete removal of the ankylotic block, gap arthroplasty, and ipsilateral coronoidectomy. Distraction osteogenesis was perfor

This article summarized the advances in treatment and research of temporomandibular joint surgery in the last 5 years which was presented in "The 2nd Condyle Fracture and Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis Symposium". The content includes 5 parts: non-surgical treatment of children condyle fracture and long-term follow-up, the improvement of operative approach for condyle fracture and key techniques, the importance and the method for the simultanesous reduction of disc in condylar fracture treatment, the development of traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis similar to hypertrophic non-unio

Ankylosis in ankylosing spondylitis: current concepts.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is the most common form of spondyloarthritis and is characterized by both inflammation and new bone formation. Despite many years of arduous efforts, we still do not clearly understand the pathogenesis of AS. The mechanisms behind new bone formation have been especially challenging to decipher due to the difficulty in obtaining tissue from spinal joints. The link between inflammation and bone formation looks obvious, but how inflammation drives spinal fusion is not evident. There are now two genes linked to prostaglandins (PG) that could be involved in AS pathogenes

Persistent stapedial artery with stapes ankylosis.

The persistent stapedial artery (PSA) is a very rare, congenital, vascular anomaly. It presents as a pulsatile middle ear mass and sometimes causes conductive hearing loss. The diagnosis of the presence of a PSA is always accidental, because it is so rare and difficult to predict. CT findings include the absence of the foramen spinosum and a soft-tissue prominence in the region of the tympanic segment of the facial nerve. The risks of surgery include facial palsy, hemiplegia caused by coagulation of the PSA, and bleeding due to injury of the carotid artery during surgery in cases of aberrant i

Videofluoroscopic analysis of temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

The causes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis, or hypomobility, are many, and it is important to understand the underlying etiology before treatment. Classically, TMJ ankylosis has been diagnosed by clinical evaluation and static imaging techniques such as plain radiographs, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Static imaging demonstrates the size and location of the bones and soft tissues of the TMJ at a given moment; however, it fails to show the dynamic relationship of structures as the condylar head goes through its range of motion. The purpose of this study is to e

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis: a case report.

This report is based on a case of temporomandibular joint ankylosis discovered in a cadaver during routine student dissection in the Department of Anatomy at Tokyo Dental College. Extensive osseous ankylosis in the left temporomandibular joint was evident in this case which exhibited a distinctive bird-like facial deformity caused by a mandibular growth disorder. This resulted in the underdevelopment of the mental area in particular. Furthermore, abnormally enlarged antegonal notching was present along the inferior border of the mandible anterior to the angle. Both these manifestations indicat

[Temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMA) in children].

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is a degenerative disease that produces a limitation of mouth opening. In children, TMJ ankylosis usually presents with facial asymmetry, difficulty in feeding and rarely upper way obstruction. Ankylosis is commonly associated with trauma, infections, systemic and congenital diseases. Diagnosis must be clinical, being CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) the most important methods to evaluate this disease. The treatment of TMJ ankylosis requires excision of the involved structures and reconstruction. We present our experience in treatment of the
