Elucidating the Life History and Ecological Aspects of Allodero hylae (Annelida: Clitellata: Naididae), A Parasitic Oligochaete of Invasive Cuban Tree Frogs in Florida.

Given their ubiquitous nature, it is surprising that more oligochaete annelid worms (Annelida: Clitellata) have not adopted an endoparasitic lifestyle. Exceptions, however, are the understudied members of the genus Dero (Allodero) that parasitize the ureters of tree frogs and toads. This study experimentally explores the life cycle and host specificity of Allodero hylae, the worm's use of chemical cues in host searching, and its seasonal prevalence and abundance over a year-long collection period on the Florida Southern College campus. A total of 2,005 A. hylae was collected from the ureter, u

High prevalence of buccal ulcerations in largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Centrarchidae) from Michigan inland lakes associated with Myzobdella lugubris Leidy 1851 (Annelida: Hirudinea).

Widespread mouth ulcerations were observed in largemouth bass collected from eight inland lakes in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan during the summer months of 2002 and 2003. These ulcerations were associated with, and most likely caused by, leech parasitism. Through the use of morphological dichotomous keys, it was determined that all leeches collected are of one species: Myzobdella lugubris. Among the eight lakes examined, Lake Orion and Devils Lake had the highest prevalence of leech parasitism (34% and 29%, respectively) and mouth ulcerations (53% and 68%, respectively). Statistical analyse

Another host, another mystery: Infection of polychaete Pista palmata (Annelida: Terebellidae) with a new blood fluke (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) in the coastal Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Terebelliform annelids can serve as intermediate hosts for blood flukes of marine fishes and sea turtles. The scarcity of global reports on the life cycles of these parasites reflects the need for further exploration. Our objective was to further our knowledge of the diversity and life cycles of blood flukes in coastal South Carolina (SC), United States. Four species of terebellids (Enoplobranchus sanguineus, Amphitrite ornata, Pista palmata, and Streblosoma hartmanae) were collected (total N = 201) at low tide from September 2025 to February 2026 at two localities in SC. Twelve specimens of t

Description of five new species of Capitellidae (Annelida, Canalipalpata, Capitellida) from the coast of Chile (South America), and re-description of Mediomastus branchiferus Hartmann-Schröder, 1962.

During an expedition with the research vessel SONNE in January 2023 eight stations along an oxygen gradient off Chile (36 °S) were sampled to investigate the differences in species composition along the gradient. This study describes all Capitellidae found at these stations at water depths between 56 and 912 metres. A total of five species were found that were previously unknown. These species are Dodecamastus branchiphorus sp. nov., Leiochrides chilensissp. nov., Mediomastus concepcionensissp. nov., Notomastus carlvilhelmisp. nov. and N. friedrichisp. nov. These species are described, illustr

Chemiluminescence systems; do all lead to same results in prolactin analysis?

BACKGROUND: Recent phylogenomic analyses congruently reveal a basal clade which consists of Oweniidae and Mageloniidae as sister group to the remaining Annelida. These results indicate that the last common ancestor of Annelida was a tube-dwelling organism. They also challenge traditional evolutionary hypotheses of different organ systems, among them the nervous system. In textbooks the central nervous system is described as consisting of a ganglionic ventral nervous system and a dorsally located brain with different tracts that connect certain parts of the brain to each other. Only limited inf

Monsters reveal patterns: bifurcated annelids and their implications for the study of development and evolution.

During recent decades, the study of anatomical anomalies has been of great relevance for research on development and its evolution. Yet most animal groups have never been studied under this perspective. In annelids, one of the most common and remarkable anomalies is anteroposterior axis bifurcation, that is animals that have two or more heads and/or tails. Bifurcated annelids were first described in the 18th century and have been occasionally reported since then. However, these animals have rarely been considered other than curiosities, one-off anomalies, or monsters, and a condensed but compr

Mouthparts of the Burgess Shale fossils Odontogriphus and Wiwaxia: implications for the ancestral molluscan radula.

The Middle Cambrian lophotrochozoans Odontogriphus omalus and Wiwaxia corrugata have been interpreted as stem-group members of either the Mollusca, the Annelida, or a group containing Mollusca + Annelida. The case for each classification rests on the organisms' unusual mouthparts, whose two to three tooth-rows resemble both the molluscan radula and the jaws of certain annelid worms. Despite their potential significance, these mouthparts have not previously been described in detail. This study examined the feeding apparatuses of over 300 specimens from the 505-million-year-old Burgess Shale, ma

Immune repertoire in the transcriptome of Littorina littorea reveals new trends in lophotrochozoan proto-complement evolution.

The evolution of complement system in invertebrates is poorly investigated. While the repertoire of complement genes in several Ecdysozoa lineages is found substantially different from that of Deuterostomia, the composition and function of the complement in the second protostome lineage, Lophotrochozoa, remains unclear. Here we report the general description of new transcriptomic data on the common periwinkle, Littorina littorea, and trace the evolutionary trajectories of the ancestral proto-complement repertoire. The repertoire is defined as immune cascade providing the minimum set of C3-asso

Cells for blastema formation: Lessons from the annelid regenerative model.

Regeneration in many animals involves the formation of blastema, a mass of undifferentiated, proliferating cells. The origin of blastema cells is a key question in regenerative biology. Two major theories are: (1) the migration of lineage-restricted stem cells, supported by studies in salamanders and planaria, and (2) the dedifferentiation of somatic cells at the injury site, which has been observed in newts, mice, zebrafish, and crickets. Because different models support these theories, the generality of either mechanism is unclear. To address this, these theories should be investigated in a

Organic wastes as soil amendments - Effects assessment towards soil invertebrates.

Using organic wastes, as soil amendments, is an important alternative to landfilling with benefits to soil structure, water retention, soil nutrient and organic matter concentrations. However, this practice should be monitored for its environmental risk due to the frequent presence, of noxious substances to soil organisms. To evaluate the potential of eight organic wastes with different origins, as soil amendments, reproduction tests with four soil invertebrate species (Folsomia candida, Enchytraeus crypticus, Hypoaspis aculeifer, Eisenia fetida) were performed using gradients of soil-waste mi

Distribution of PACAP-like immunoreactivity in the nervous system of oligochaeta.

The marked similarity between the primary structures of human, other vertebrate, and the invertebrate tunicate PACAP suggests that PACAP is one of the most highly conserved peptides during the phylogeny of the metazoans. We investigated the distribution of PACAP-like immunoreactivity in the nervous system of three oligochaete (Annelida) worms with immunocytochemistry. The distribution pattern of immunoreactivity was similar in all three species (Lumbricus terrestris, Eisenia fetida, and Lumbricus polyphemus). The cerebral ganglion contains numerous immunoreactive cells and fibers. A few cells

Sibling species differently distributed around a CO2 vent show transplantation proteomic remodelling, while displaying metabolomic signatures associated with their origin.

The cellular homeostatic response (CHR) and cellular stress response (CSR) work together to maintain homeostasis. Studying phylogenetically closely-related species inhabiting different environments can help investigate the interplay between the CHR and CSR. We conducted reciprocal in situ transplant experiments in a natural CO2 vent (Ischia, Italy), using the sibling annelid species Platynereis cf.. dumerilii and Platynereis cf.. massiliensis which have been shown to have different preferential distributions around the CO2 vent. Following transplantations, we characterised the response of each

Shooting the phantom: what is Octolasion tyrtaeum?

Our study follows the history of the species name tyrtaeum, from the scanty original description as Enterion tyrtaeum by Savigny, 1826 through the loss of type specimen, additional description by Ribaucourt, confusion in the later literature, suggested synonymy with O. lacteum and different opinions of the different authors. Our molecular phylogenetic study within the genus Octolasion reflects the inconsistency in the name usage and shows that O. lacteum and O. tyrtaeum can't be separated genetically. As a solution of the problem, the name E. tyrtaeum is suggested to be treated as a Lumbricus

New Dermoscopic Sign in Leech Therapy.

Leeches are hermaphroditic parasites of phylum Annelida and class Hirudinea. A minority of these are sanguinivorous and the cause of human morbidity. Historically, leeches have been used for medicinal purposes with the earliest recorded being 1500 BC. Medicinal leeches use their suction discs for locomotion, adhesion to the host, and, in the case of the anterior disc, also for blood ingestion. Dermoscopy is a new non-invasive tool that can help in the diagnosis of miscellaneous skin conditions. The new dermoscopic sign of leech bite i.e., the Mercedes Benz Logo sign which corresponds to the re

Diverse Localization Patterns of an R-Type Lectin in Marine Annelids.

Lectins facilitate cell-cell contact and are critical in many cellular processes. Studying lectins may help us understand the mechanisms underlying tissue regeneration. We investigated the localization of an R-type lectin in a marine annelid (Perinereis sp.) with remarkable tissue regeneration abilities. Perinereis nuntia lectin (PnL), a galactose-binding lectin with repeating Gln-X-Trp motifs, is derived from the ricin B-chain. An antiserum was raised against PnL to specifically detect a 32-kDa lectin in the crude extracts from homogenized lugworms. The antiserum detected PnL in the epidermis

Getting to the root of fireworms' stinging chaetae-chaetal arrangement and ultrastructure of Eurythoe complanata (Pallas, 1766) (Amphinomida).

Amphinomid species are since long known to cause urtication upon contact with the human skin. Since it has been reported that amphinomid chaetae are hollow, it has repeatedly been suggested that poison is injected upon epidermal contact. To test predictions for the structural correlate of such a stinging device we studied the structure and formation of chaetae in the fireworm Eurythoe complanata (Amphinomida). Neither the structure of the chaetae nor their formation and their position within the parapodium provide evidence for their function as hollow needles to inject poison. The chaetae even

Unsegmented marine annelids as biomechanical models for soft robotics.

This work investigates marine worms as a source of bioinspiration for soft robotics, focusing on Phascolosoma stephensoni (Annelida), an unsegmented sipunculan species with a fully eversible introvert capable of remarkable elongations. High-resolution micro-computed tomography was used to resolve the internal musculoskeletal architecture across functional configurations. Morphometric analyses of live specimens revealed strong differentiation between body regions: trunk length remains nearly constant during motion (7.26 ± 3.40 mm retracted vs. 7.70 ± 3.47 mm extended), whereas total body length
