Prenatal alcohol exposure can result in long-term cognitive and behavioral deficits. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) refers to a range of permanent birth defects caused by prenatal alcohol exposure, and is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in the US. Studies by autopsy and conventional structural MRI indicate that the midline structures of the brain are particularly vulnerable to prenatal alcohol exposure. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has shown that abnormalities in brain white matter especially the corpus callosum are very common in FASD. Quantitative susceptibility mapping

The corpus callosum, the largest commissural structure in the human brain, is a central focus in research on aging and neurological diseases. It is also a critical target for interventions such as deep brain stimulation and serves as an important biomarker in clinical trials, including those investigating remyelination therapies. Despite extensive research on corpus callosum segmentation, few publicly available tools provide a comprehensive and automated analysis pipeline. To address this gap, we present FastSurfer-CC, an efficient and fully automated framework for corpus callosum morphometry.

OBJECTIVE: Stimulation of the inferior thalamic peduncle (ITP) is emerging as a promising new therapeutic target in certain psychiatric disorders. The circuitry that includes the nonspecific thalamic system (NSTS), which projects via the ITP to the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), is involved in the physiopathology of major depression disorder (MDD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The safety and efficacy of chronic ITP stimulation in cases of MDD and OCD refractory to medical treatment is presented.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients with OCD and one with MDD were implanted with tetrapol

BACKGROUND: Accuracy of electrode placement for deep brain stimulation (DBS) is critical to achieving desired surgical outcomes and impacts the efficacy of treating neurodegenerative diseases. Intraoperative brain shift degrades the accuracy of surgical navigation based on preoperative images.
PURPOSE: We extended a model-based image updating scheme to address intraoperative brain shift in DBS surgery and improved its accuracy in deep brain.
METHODS: We evaluated 10 patients, retrospectively, who underwent bilateral DBS surgery and classified them into groups of large and small deformation b

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: AP-4-associated hereditary spastic paraplegia (AP-4-HSP: SPG47, SPG50, SPG51, SPG52) is an emerging cause of childhood-onset hereditary spastic paraplegia and mimic of cerebral palsy. This study aims to define the spectrum of brain MRI findings in AP-4-HSP and to investigate radioclinical correlations.
METHODS: We performed a systematic qualitative and quantitative analysis of 107 brain MRI studies from 76 individuals with genetically confirmed AP-4-HSP and correlation with clinical findings including surrogates of disease severity.
RESULTS: We define AP-4-HSP as a

A large number of genes encoding for tubulin proteins are expressed in the developing brain. Each is subject to specific spatial and temporal expression patterns. However, most are highly expressed in post-mitotic neurons during stages of neuronal migration and differentiation. The major tubulin subclasses (alpha- and beta-tubulin) share high sequence and structural homology. These globular proteins form heterodimers and subsequently co-assemble into microtubules. Microtubules are dynamic, cytoskeletal polymers which play key roles in cellular processes crucial for cortical development, includ

Essential tremor is an idiopathic movement disorder characterized by bilateral action tremor of the upper limbs with or without other neurologic symptoms.1 Pharmacologic management is the first-line treatment for this condition. Surgical treatment includes deep brain stimulation and thalamotomy procedures.2 Furthermore, thalamotomy can be achieved by magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound, stereotactic radiosurgery, or radiofrequency.3 Advantages of modulation therapies include bilateral implementation, adjustability, and reversibility of the effect.2 Disadvantages include delaye

OBJECTIVE: Thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) is commonly used to treat essential tremor, but the optimal lead location within the thalamus has not been systematically evaluated. We examined the relation of lead location to clinical outcome in a series of essential tremor patients treated by thalamic DBS.
METHODS: Fifty-seven leads in 37 patients were studied. Lead locations were measured by postoperative magnetic resonance imaging. Contralateral arm tremor was assessed in the DBS-on and DBS-off states using the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin tremor rating scale, with a mean follow-up of 26 months. Lea

BACKGROUND: Brain shift during deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery may contribute to changes in lead position. Although intracranial air volume is considered an important factor, other intraoperative factors may also influence lead displacement. This study evaluated interval changes in subthalamic nucleus (STN)-DBS lead-tip position between immediate and delayed postoperative computed tomography (CT) and investigated factors associated with these changes, including intracranial air volume and intraoperative head position.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 42 DBS leads implanted bilaterall

The authors report a case of a germinoma of the brain in the child with symptoms restricted to central nervous system. Ten-year-old girl presented initially with sight deterioration, learning difficulties, abnormal behavior, polydipsia, and polyuria. Brain magnetic resonance examination revealed T2 hyperintensity of the corpus callosum, anterior commissure, and caudate nuclei. Brain biopsy revealed extensive macrophage infiltration. Given these results and positive antinuclear antibodies in the blood, immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory treatment was implemented but it was not effective. Th

Fornical injury in transforaminal approach is well known. Its injury in the anterior interhemispheric approach (AIA) has been rarely highlighted. We report 2 cases with a large suprasellar tumor who underwent AIA. Postoperative heavily T2 weighted reversed (T2R) MR images demonstrated its unilateral injury. The clinical significance of symptom-free fornical injury after AIA is discussed. Cases 1 and 2 were a 15 year-old girl with a meningioma and a 49-year-old woman with a craniopharyngioma, respectively. They underwent AIA. Postoperative T2R images revealed unilateral fornical crus atrophy. T

Do structures exist within the embryonic central nervous system that guide axons across the midline during development of the great cerebral commissures (corpus callosum, anterior commissure)? With the use of serial section and reconstructive computer graphic techniques we have found that during normal ontogeny of the mouse forebrain and before the arrival of the pioneer fibers of the corpus callosum at the midline, a population of primitive glial cells migrates medially (through the fused walls of the dorsal septum) from the ependymal zones of each hemisphere. At the midline, and well rostral

Neurons of the nucleus of the posterior commissure (nuc PC), an identifiable cluster of neurons in the embryonic zebrafish brain, project growth cones ventrally along the posterior commissure to the anterior tegmentum where the PC intersects two longitudinal tracts, the tract of the postoptic commissure (TPOC) and the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). Once at the intersection, nuc PC growth cones turn posteriorly onto the TPOC in the dorsal tegmentum and follow it to the hindbrain. Previously we showed that in the absence of the TPOC, nuc PC growth cones often extended along aberrant pathw

In autism spectrum disorder (ASD), disrupted functional and structural connectivity in the social brain has been suggested as the core biological mechanism underlying the social recognition deficits of this neurodevelopmental disorder. In this study, we aimed to identify genetic and neurostructural abnormalities at birth in a non-human primate model of ASD, the common marmoset with maternal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), which has been reported to display social recognition deficit in adulthood. Using a comprehensive gene expression analysis, we found that 20 genes were significantly downreg

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that brain frontal white matter (WM) might be qualitatively altered in adolescents with early onset schizophrenia (EOS). Diffusion tensor imaging provides a relatively new approach for quantifying possible connectivity of WM in vivo.
METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging was used to examine the WM integrity of frontal regions at seven levels from 25 mm above to 5 mm below the anterior commissure-posterior commissure (AC-PC) plane. Three other regions were examined: the occipital region at the AC-PC plane and the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum. Fractional an

Brain microvessels form a tight blood-tissue permeability barrier and express high levels of specific enzymes, including gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP). This differentiation is thought to be induced by perivascular astrocytes. By using histochemical methods, we found that the percentage of GGTP-positive vessels varied considerably in different areas of rat brain. Enzyme activity was not found in the pineal gland or the median eminence, where the blood-brain barrier is not expressed. In areas where the blood-brain barrier is expressed, the percentage of GGTP-positive vessels varied from 8

The cholinergic neurons in the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) are a key structure in cognition, the dysfunction of which is associated with various neurological disorders, especially dementias. However, the whole-brain neural connectivity to cholinergic neurons in the NBM remains to be further and comprehensively researched. Using virus-based, specific, retrograde, and anterograde tracing, we illustrated the monosynaptic inputs and axon projections of NBM cholinergic neurons in choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-Cre transgenic mice. Our results showed that NBM cholinergic neurons received main
