Chrysophanic acid (1,8-dihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone), isolated from the Australian Aboriginal medicinal plant Dianella longifolia, has been found to inhibit the replication of poliovirus types 2 and 3 (Picornaviridae) in vitro. The compound inhibited poliovirus-induced cytopathic effects in BGM (Buffalo green monkey) kidney cells at a 50% effective concentration of 0.21 and 0.02 microgram/ml for poliovirus types 2 and 3, respectively. The compound inhibited an early stage in the viral replication cycle, but did not have an irreversible virucidal effect on poliovirus particles. Chrysophanic

P-1894B inhibits prolyl hydroxylase in vitro and has been proposed as a topical treatment for dermal fibrosis. The drug had similar effects on two fibroblast lines from normal human skin and one line from a patient with lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. Exposure of logarithmically-growing cell monolayers for 72 h caused dose-dependent inhibition of proliferation at 0.05-0.5 microgram/ml but time-dependent cell death at 1-50 micrograms/ml. The epithelial cell line NCTC 2544 gave a similar result. Collagen lattices containing normal fibroblasts contracted more slowly in the presence of the drug at

Anthraquinone class of compounds possesses a broad spectrum of therapeutic applications. Cancer cell targeting ability, together with photogeneration of reactive oxygen species, renders anthraquinones an interesting class of photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Screening of newer compounds for better singlet oxygen generation is of current interest to improve the practical usability in PDT. In this study, we investigate the photodynamic activity of nine commercially available anthraquinones, using EPR spectroscopy and computational techniques, to identify the role of substituents o

Over the past decade the science has studied synthetic photosensitizers used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) or photochemotherapy as anticancer candidates. In this context, compounds extracted from vegetable species present interesting potential in the cancer field. In our laboratory, we studied Heterophyllaea pustulata a phototoxic shrub that habit the northwest of Argentina. From this vegetal, by in vitro germination, we obtained Rubiadin and Soranjidiol, two anthraquinones that exhibited significant photocytotoxicity on human cancer cells. In addition, the fraction obtained from callus cultur

Acquisition of tissue spatial distribution information is essential for identifying sites of action, assessing pharmacological effects and elucidating mechanisms, thereby providing evidence for drug development. Anthraquinones, including rhein, emodin, aloe-emodin, chrysophanol and physcion, are the main pharmacologically active constituents of rhubarb. However, as exogenous compounds, most anthraquinones are difficult to detect by conventional matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-TOF-MSI) because of low tissue abundance, poor ionization e

The core of Chinese medicine compound prescription is the synergistic effect between the components and the effect of the interaction between the components on the dissolution and absorption of the drug. As a classic Chinese herbal formula, the laxative effect of Dahuang-Gancao decoction (DGD) is mainly derived from the anthraquinones in rhubarb. However, these components may also trigger adverse reactions due to their potency. Licorice, as a moderating herb, can alleviate the harshness of rhubarb. In this study, ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight ma

Microbial strains isolated from extreme and understudied environments, such as caves, are still poorly investigated for the production of bioactive secondary metabolites. Investigation of the ethyl acetate extract from the growth medium produced by the soil-derived fungus Aspergillus sp. SDC28, isolated from a Brazilian cave, yielded two anthraquinones: versicolorin C (1) and versiconol (2). The complete assignment of nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopic data of 1 and 2 was performed for the first time. Moreover, the yet unreported absolute configuration of both compounds was unam

Candida albicans can form biofilm on biotic and abiotic surfaces of medical implants to cause superficial and systemic infections under specific condition. The formation of hyphae and matrix of C. albicans are considered as probable virulence factors. We assessed the inhibitory activities of 26 anthraquinones against C. albicans biofilm formation, which were substituted by different functional groups including hydroxyl groups, amino groups, carboxyl groups, alkyl groups, and glycoside groups at C1- or C2-position. Among them, anthraquinones without substituents at other positions but only an a

In this study, the inhibitory effects of four anthraquinones including chrysophanol, emodin, physcione and rhein on tyrosinase were investigated by enzyme inhibition assay. The results indicated that all of anthraquinones could significantly inhibit the activity of tyrosinase in a competitive manner. To gain insight into the inhibitory mechanism of anthraquinones on tyrosinase, spectroscopic analysis combined with molecular docking studies were performed. Fluorescence results showed that anthraquinones interacted with tyrosinase by static quenching in a molecular ratio of 1:1. Circular dichroi

The seeds of Senna tora L.are the core organs for the biosynthesis of anthraquinones, and their medicinal value is highly dependent on the content of anthraquinones. However, TCP transcription factors play a key regulatory role in the biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites. Nevertheless, whether TCP transcription factors regulate the accumulation of anthraquinone compounds has not been reported. Therefore, in this study, qRT-PCR analysis was performed to determine the expression pattern of StTCP11 at different growth and development stages of S. tora seeds. An overexpression vector was co

BACKGROUND: Rhubarb, traditionally used in China for neurological disorders, has recently attracted considerable scientific attention for its neuroprotective and cerebrovascular benefits. The main therapeutic components of rhubarb are anthraquinones, including emodin, aloe-emodin, chrysophanol, rhein, and physcion. Accumulating experimental evidence indicates that anthraquinones are of importance in neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis. However, as a promising candidate for drug development, the mechan

This paper reports the findings of an examination on the influence of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) on the degradation of trichloroethene (TCE) by Dehalococcoides-containing consortium (designated UC-1). Compared with the control, the results indicated that (i) in 100 μmol/L AQDS, TCE was rapidly degraded. More ethene was produced, while less vinyl chloride (VC) was accumulated. AQDS might improve the activity of organisms in dechlorinating populations which resulted in more ethene being accumulated in the medium; (ii) in 500 μmol/L AQDS, TCE was incompletely degraded. Presumably, 500 μ

Several anthraquinone derivatives are active against different kinds of human cancer. The cancerostatic activity has been mainly attributed to their ability to bind strongly to DNA by intercalation. Here, infrared spectroscopy was used to detect further, more specific DNA interactions with the prominent anticancer drugs daunomycin, adriamycin, aclacinomycin A and mitoxantrone as well as with the cytotoxic violamycin BI. The most striking result was a significant decrease in wave number of the band arising from antisymmetric stretching vibration of the PO2- groups of DNA upon complexation with

Neuroinflammation, mediated by microglia and astrocytes, is an abnormal immune reaction in central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Stimulation of TRPV1 has been found to enhance microglial activation, resulting in a pro-inflammatory response. Natural anthraquinones such as physcion and rhein are commonly found in rhubarb, a medicinal plant recognized for its dual role in culinary and therapeutic applications. The therapeutic potential and mechanisms of these anthraquinones remain largely unexplored. This research aims to examine how anthraquinones protect against neuroinflammation and delineat
