Comparing the gut microbiota of Sichuan golden monkeys across multiple captive and wild settings: roles of anthropogenic activities and host factors.

BACKGROUND: Captivity and artificial food provision are common conservation strategies for the endangered golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana). Anthropogenic activities have been reported to impact the fitness of R. roxellana by altering their gut microbiota, a crucial indicator of animal health. Nevertheless, the degree of divergence in gut microbiota between different anthropogenically-disturbed (AD) R. roxellana and their counterparts in the wild has yet to be elucidated. Here, we conducted a comparative analysis of the gut microbiota across nine populations of R. roxellana sp

The (Re-)Emergence and Spread of Viral Zoonotic Disease: A Perfect Storm of Human Ingenuity and Stupidity.

Diseases that are transmitted from vertebrate animals to humans are referred to as zoonotic diseases. Although microbial agents such as bacteria and parasites are linked to zoonotic events, viruses account for a high percentage of zoonotic diseases that have emerged. Worryingly, the 21st century has seen a drastic increase in the emergence and re-emergence of viral zoonotic disease. Even though humans and animals have coexisted for millennia, anthropogenic factors have severely increased interactions between the two populations, thereby increasing the risk of disease spill-over. While drivers

Metagenomics Reveals Microbial Community Shifts Associated With Contrasting Anthropogenic Impacts in Freshwater Sources of A Coastal Protected Area in Southeastern Brazil.

This study aimed to characterize freshwater microbial communities, environmental drivers, and anthropogenic impact patterns across three sites on Marambaia Island (southeastern Brazil) using metagenomics. Samples collected from freshwater sources used for human consumption were processed through concentration, nucleic acid extraction, and sequencing on the Illumina NextSeq 2000 platform. A total of 67.2 million reads were assembled into 89,230 bacterial contigs, mostly attributed to Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Betaproteobacteria. Sites under lower anthropogenic influence exhi

Helminth fauna and histopathology associated with parasitic infections in Phrynops geoffroanus (Schweigger, 1812) (Testudines, Chelidae) in a Brazilian river subjected to anthropogenic activities.

The objective of this study was to determine the structure of the helminth fauna and identify the macroscopic and histopathological alterations associated with parasitic infections in Phrynops geoffroanus. Freshwater turtles of both sexes were captured during the dry and rainy seasons in four municipalities along the Capibaribe River. The study included 63 animals, of which 79.37% (50/63) were parasitized by one or more helminths. In total, 933 helminths of seven taxa were recovered: Serpinema monospiculatus, Spiroxys figueiredoi, Nematophila grandis, Polystomoides brasiliensis, Cheloniodiplos

Data-driven optimisation of multi-agency river water quality monitoring networks under high anthropogenic pressure.

Integrating heterogeneous water quality data from multiple monitoring agencies into a single reproducible analytical pipeline remains an unsolved challenge in environmental science. We present the Optimised Water Quality Monitoring Framework (OWQMF), an open-source four-block pipeline that harmonises multi-source monitoring data, computes dual water quality indices with objectively derived weights using a game-theory ensemble of three objective weighting methods, produces gradient-boosting ensemble forecasts with walk-forward cross-validation, and selects the best forecasting model through mul

An AI-ready remote sensing dataset for high-resolution forest disturbance mapping.

Europe's forests face increasing threats from natural disturbances such as insect outbreaks, pathogens, and windthrow, often aggravated by extreme weather events and followed by subsequent salvage logging. Monitoring these events at high spatial detail is essential for forest management and climate adaptation, yet many remain undetected when using medium-resolution satellite imagery, and manual reporting by authorities is time-consuming and inconsistent. Here we present a high-resolution, deep learning-ready dataset designed for the classification of forest disturbance types. It consists of ~1

Hindsight informs foresight: revisiting millennial forecasts of impacts and status of rocky shores in 2025.

Rocky shorelines are characterised by vulnerability to both land- and sea-derived impacts. They face acute impacts such as pollution from shipping accidents, chronic pollution from point sources, run-off and catchments plus disturbances by food gathering, recreation and sediment deposition in sheltered areas. Coastal urbanisation can both impact natural shores and create impoverished artificial rocky shores. Superimposed upon local and regional scale impacts are global environmental changes including warming, sea-level rise, increasing storm frequency, ocean acidification and non-native invasi

Running the Risk: Road-Crossing Behavior in Wild Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in an Anthropogenic Habitat in Uganda.

Recent research highlights the behavioral flexibility of wild chimpanzees in response to human-induced changes in their environment, including agricultural and infrastructural development. The expansion of road networks threatens chimpanzee populations across Africa. Studying their road-crossing behavior, especially outside protected areas where road impacts are greatest, helps identify factors influencing their choices and flexibility. This study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of how chimpanzees navigate busy roads and assess the danger posed by roads. Such insights are needed to develo

High-resolution monitoring of air pollution and climate variability in the Indus-Ganges-Brahmaputra basins: Insights into physical drivers.

The Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra river basins are now among the world's most climate sensitive regions, driven by rapid population growth, improper land utilization, extensive land use and land cover (LULC) changes, and worsening air pollution. This study uses several high-resolution and reanalysis datasets, together with the non-parametric statistical techniques and Google Earth Engine (GEE) algorithms, to assess air pollution, climate variability, and their physical drivers across annual, seasonal, monthly, and diurnal timescales from 2010 to 2023. The findings reveal a substantial increas

Host, environment, and anthropogenic factors drive landscape dynamics of an environmentally transmitted pathogen: Sarcoptic mange in the bare-nosed wombat.

Understanding the spatial dynamics and drivers of wildlife pathogens is constrained by sampling logistics, with implications for advancing the field of landscape epidemiology and targeted allocation of management resources. However, visually apparent wildlife diseases, when combined with remote-surveillance and distribution modelling technologies, present an opportunity to overcome this landscape-scale problem. Here, we investigated dynamics and drivers of landscape-scale wildlife disease, using clinical signs of sarcoptic mange (caused by Sarcoptes scabiei) in its bare-nosed wombat (BNW; Vomb

Optical and molecular indices of dissolved organic matter for estimating biodegradability and resulting carbon dioxide production in inland waters: A review.

Biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) constitutes the most labile fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which also functions as a source of CO2 emissions from inland waters. However, no systematic review is available on DOM indicators of BDOC and CO2 production potential. Optical and molecular indices can be used to track small changes in DOM composition during biodegradation. In this review, we identified four different methods for measuring BDOC together with their strengths and limitations. In addition, we discuss the potential of using documented optical indices based on abso

Closing Knowledge Gaps on Global Budget of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) by Quantifying Indirect Emissions From Anthropogenic Nitrogen.

Human activities emit nitrogen oxides (NOx ≡ NO + NO2; with source emissions approximated as nitric oxide (NO)), potent air pollutants and short-lived climate forcers, through direct and indirect pathways. Unlike direct releases, however, indirect NOx emissions remain poorly understood and inadequately quantified. Here, by synthesizing available observations across global terrestrial ecosystems, we show that soil moisture and pH strongly affect the ratio of annual background NO to nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions ( R NO / N 2 O ), with a critical threshold at 46% water-filled soil pore space.

The burden of El Niño-Southern Oscillation-related dengue attributable to anthropogenic climate change: a multicountry modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is known to be associated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) but the size of the effect is unclear, as is the influence of anthropogenic climate change (ACC). We aimed to quantify the associations between ENSO and dengue risk in 21 countries, and to estimate the contribution of ACC to the ENSO-related dengue burden. METHODS: We collected monthly dengue cases and observed and simulated climate data from 21 countries including 1237 locations from 2000 to 2019. We characterised Eastern Pacific (EP) and Central Pacific (CP) ENSO exposures for each location based on the E

Accessing the Past: A Sediment Core Revealing Anthropogenic Impacts of Technology-Critical Elements on the Marine Environment.

One group of elements attracting more and more attention are so-called technology-critical elements (TCEs). In comparison with legacy pollutants, the anthropogenic impact of TCEs on the environment might still be minor, but various applications introduce them to the most remote places in the world including the marine environment. One area prone to pollution is the Baltic Sea, partly due to the lack of water exchange with the North Sea. In this study, a sediment core from the German Baltic Sea was used to analyze a total of 42 elemental mass fractions. Based on radiometric dating of 210Pb and

Anthropogenic impact and antibiotic resistance among the indicator and pathogenic bacteria from several industrial and sewage discharge points along the coast from Pydibhimavaram to Tuni, East Coast of India.

Increasing urbanisation and industrialisation of the Visakhapatnam region have brought domestic sewage and industrial wastewater discharge into the coastal ocean. This study examines the indicator and pathogenic bacteria's quantitative abundance and antibiotic susceptibility. This study collected surface and subsurface water samples from ten different regions (147 stations; 294 samples), including 12 industrial discharge points, surrounding stations and two harbours from the coast of Pydibheemavaram to Tuni. Physicochemical parameters like salinity, temperature, fluorescence, pH, total suspend

A T-dependent antibody response evaluation in CD-1 mice after an acute whole-body inhalation exposure to nickel (II) chloride hexahydrate.

Nickel (Ni) in ambient air may vary regionally with contributions from both natural processes and anthropogenic activities. Exposure to Ni compounds in ambient air above a certain level is associated with acute adverse effects, such as upper respiratory tract irritation, pneumonitis, and chronic adverse effects, such as respiratory cancer. Inhalation reference exposure standards are enacted in different jurisdictions to minimize exposures to ambient Ni above levels that can elicit adverse effects. This paper reports a guideline-/GLP-compliant study designed for setting inhalation exposure stan

Genetic Diversity Analysis of Red Fox Populations (Vulpes vulpes L., 1758) in Natural and Anthropogenic Isolation.

This study presents a comparative analysis of the genetic structure and diversity of three red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) populations representing different microevolutionary scenarios: panmixia (free-ranging Belarusian foxes), geographic isolation (free-ranging Scottish foxes), and anthropogenic selection (farm-bred foxes). Using a validated set of STR markers, multivariate statistical analysis was conducted to assess the genetic structure and the degree of genetic erosion across the studied groups. The wild red fox population in Belarus has been shown to maintain a state close to panmixia (PHWE

Bayesian Model Revealing Segment-Scale Elemental Flux, Doubled CO2 Consumption, and Potential Anthropogenic Impact in the Upper Mekong Basin: Constraints from Strontium Isotopes.

Lancang River (LCR), the upper region of the large transboundary Mekong River, provides a critical understanding of terrestrial weathering status and CO2 consumption. Riverine Sr isotopes play a crucial role in identifying the link between continental weathering and the nearby ocean. This study reported spatial variations of Sr data from LCR during the flood season, and Sr isotopes were coupled with hydrochemical data based on a Bayesian model to assess solute sources. Results showed that carbonate weathering was the predominant contributor to riverine dissolved Sr (contribution ratio ∼35%). B
