Nitropropenyl benzodioxole, an anti-infective agent with action as a protein tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor.

We report on the activities of a broad spectrum antimicrobial compound, nitropropenyl benzodioxole (NPBD) which are of relevance to its potential as an anti-infective drug. These investigations support the proposal that a major mechanism of NPBD is action as a tyrosine mimetic, competitively inhibiting bacterial and fungal protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTP). NPBD did not affect major anti-bacterial drug targets, namely, ATP production, cell wall or cell membrane integrity, or transcription and translation of RNA. NPBD inhibited bacterial YopH and human PTP1B and not human CD45 in enzyme assays

Bacteriophage as an anti-biofilm agent against Pseudomonas aeruginosa from wound infection.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen associated with wound infections, resists many commonly available antibiotics. Its ability to form biofilm provides an additional trait to evade antibiotics. Biofilm-associated infections are difficult to treat, raising the need for alternative strategies. Thus, this research aimed to investigate the potential of bacteriophage to disrupt the biofilm produced by P. aeruginosa isolated from wound infections. Wound samples were collected aseptically, processed for the isolation of P. aeruginosa, and identified by standard microbiological methods.

Rapid Review: Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Agents and Aminosalicylates in COVID-19 Infections.

In the current COVID-19 pandemic, there has been concern regarding the use of ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents by COVID-19 infected patients. Aminosalicylates (5-ASAs) are structurally similar and have anti-inflammatory functions that resemble those of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents. Since 5-ASAs are a mainstay treatment for inflammatory bowel disease, the authors review the pharmacology of both classes of drugs and discuss the potential relevance of 5-ASAs in the ongoing discussion of medication use in patients infected with COVID-19.

Monkeypox virus infections in small animal models for evaluation of anti-poxvirus agents.

An ideal animal model for the study of a human disease is one which utilizes a route of infection that mimics the natural transmission of the pathogen; the ability to obtain disease with an infectious dose equivalent to that causing disease in humans; as well having a disease course, morbidity and mortality similar to that seen with human disease. Additionally, the animal model should have a mode(s) of transmission that mimics human cases. The development of small animal models for the study of monkeypox virus (MPXV) has been quite extensive for the relatively short period of time this pathoge

Role of anti-tumour necrosis factor-alpha therapeutic agents in the emergence of infections.

There is increasing interest concerning the possible impact of anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha therapeutic agents on the emergence of infections. However, these agents do not seem to increase the incidence of adverse infectious events significantly. Published observations concern mostly infections of the urinary and upper respiratory tracts that develop in the setting of co-morbidities, such as anterior or concomitant immunosuppressive treatment. Infliximab appears to increase the risk of tuberculosis, but this effect has not been observed with other anti-TNF-alpha agents. To better ch

Epidemiology of delta agent infection in Arabia: geographical distribution and prevalence of anti-delta.

The epidemiology of infection with the recently discovered delta (delta) agent was assessed in Saudi Arabia from the prevalence of antibody to delta (anti-delta) in 488 HBsAg-seropositive subjects from various regions of the country. In the Riyadh area, anti-delta was prevalent in 22.2% of chronic hepatitis B patients compared to 7.9% and 6.7% in active hepatitis B patients and HBsAg carriers, respectively. Anti-delta was also prevalent in HBsAg carriers from Al-Hafouf (5.3%) and Najran (9.6%), but no anti-delta was detected in 40 HBsAg-positive polytransfused thalassemics and in 145 HBsAg car

An adjuvant effect of Metformin as an anti-fibrotic agent when administered with the anti-schistosomal Praziquantel in Schistosoma mansoni infected mice.

Schistosomiasis is the second most common parasitic disease post Malaria around the world. Praziquantel (PZQ) is known as the most efficient anti- schistosomal drug but has no anti-fibrotic effect. Metformin (Met) is a well-known drug for type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to evaluate the role of Met as anti-schistosomal and anti-fibrotic agents alone or in combination with PZQ treatment. Forty male CD1 mice were divided into four groups (n=10 mice) as following; the first group (Gp1) was served as a negative control. Gp2, Gp3, Gp4, and Gp5 were infected with (60-80) S. mansoni cercariae. After

Antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-biofilm effects of sulfamethoxazole-complexes against pulmonary infection agents.

Antibiotic resistance associated with pulmonary infection agents has become a public health problem, being considered one of the main priorities for immediate resolution. Thus, to increase the therapeutic options in the fight against resistant microorganisms, the synthesis of molecules from pre-existing drugs has shown to be a promising alternative. In this sense, the present work reports the synthesis, characterization, and biological evaluation (against fungal and bacterial agents that cause lung infections) of potential metallodrugs based on sulfamethoxazole complexed with AuI, AgI, HgII, C

Failure of anti-inflammatory agents to modulate infection-induced pelvic adhesive disease in rabbits.

A suspension of Neisseria gonorrhoeae was injected into rabbit uterine horns to induce pelvic adhesive disease. There was no statistical difference in the formation of adhesions between the rabbits that were given anti-inflammatory agents and those that received no therapy. This study suggests that anti-inflammatory agents will offer no benefit as adjunctive therapy for the prevention of infection-induced pelvic adhesive disease.

A possible application of hinokitiol as a natural zinc ionophore and anti-infective agent for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 and viral infections.

Zinc and the combination with zinc ionophore have been reported in basic research and several clinical investigations as a potentially viable and economical preventive and therapeutic options for COVID-19 treatment. Zinc is a vital microelement that actively supports respiratory epithelium barrier integrity, innate and adaptive immune functions, and inflammatory regulations. Moreover, zinc may also prevent viral entry, suppress viral replication, and mitigate the damages due to oxidative stress and hyperinflammatory reaction in patients with respiratory infections. Hinokitiol (β-thujaplicin) i

Identification of acylhydrazone derivatives with isopropanolamine moiety as potent anti-virulence agents for combating bacterial infection.

BACKGROUND: Quorum sensing (QS)-regulated virulence factors including biofilms are key drivers of phytopathogen pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance. Unlike conventional bactericides that exert selective pressure leading to resistance evolution, anti-virulence agents offer a promising strategy to control bacterial diseases without promoting resistance, having significant potential in the creation of new bactericides. RESULTS: In this study, hydroxybenzaldehyde was used as the starting material to synthesize a series of 39 novel acylhydrazone derivatives containing flexible isopropanolam
