The surface protective antigen (Spa) protein of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae has been shown to be highly immunogenic and is a potential candidate for a new vaccine against erysipelas. In this study, we cloned and sequenced spa genes from all E. rhusiopathiae serovar reference strains as well as from a serovar 18 strain which was not classified as any species in the genus Erysipelothrix. Tear samples of 20 patients who were determined to have positive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) after an acute hepatitis B infection and aqueous humor samples of 10 patients who were HBsAg carriers were tested for HBsAg, and the results obtained for serum and these fluids were compared. In 85% of the 20 patients who were HBsAg positive, HBsAg was found to be positive in tear samples. In 50% of the other 10 patients in aqueous humor was also found to be HBsAg positive. Our findings show that tears and aqueous humor are important in the spreading of hepatitis B infections.

We studied the distribution of thrombomodulin antigen (TM Ag) in the rabbit using an affinity-purified antibody raised in a goat against rabbit thrombomodulin. Detection of the ABO (H) blood group in the urothelium in cases of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder is a good indicator of the future behaviour of these tumours. Since conventional histopathological and clinical examination in bilharzial bladder carcinoma shows a clinical staging error rate of 37.2%, we used the specific red cell adherence (SRCA) technique to study the cell surface antigens in 28 patients over a 5-year period. A prediction rate of 63.6 to 84.6% was obtained when correlated with clinical behaviour.

Hepatitis B (surface) antigen (HBSAg) was found in the serum of 8 out of 4 245 women attending the antenatal clinic of the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital Seven (0, 16%) were asymptomatic carriers of the antigen, while the eigth suffered from polyarteritis nodosa. Seven of the 8 babies born to these mothers were followed-up over periods of up to 18 months, and 1 has become a chronic carrier of HBSAg. The antigen was not detected in the colostrum (breast milk) of the 6 positive mothers tested, but it was present in amniotic fluid, placenta and cord blood of some of the mother-infant couples.

We have determined the incidence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in an urban (Enugu) and a rural (Okpatu) population groups in Nigeria. There were no statistically significant differences between the incidence in the two populations. Various strains of vaccinia, variola, whitepox, monkeypox and cowpox viruses were examined for their capacity to induce a specific early antigen detectable on the surface of infected cells. BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to identify oncofetal antigens expressed in prostate cancer and systematically examine their potential role using theranostic approaches. Cell surface oncofetal antigens are expressed to a limited extent in adult cells and may be variably expressed in tumor cells.
