Association of antisocial personality disorder with psychiatric morbidity among patients with substance use disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The aims were to determine among patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) whether patients with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) manifest less, the same, or more of the following: (1) psychiatric symptoms, (2) family history of psychiatric disorder, (3) psychiatric disorders and morbidity, and (4) psychiatric treatment, as compared to patients without ASPD. DESIGN & DEFINITION: Scheduled interview using DSM-III-R criteria for ASPD, with blinded interviewers making the ASPD classification vs. other assessments. SETTINGS: Alcohol-drug treatment programs located in two unive

Repetitive Self-Inflicted Craniocerebral Injury in a Patient with Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Self-inflicted penetrating injuries in patients with mental disorders are a rare phenomenon. The authors report the case of a prisoner who recurrently presented to the emergency department over a period of four years for self-insertion of six metal foreign bodies into the skull. Computed tomography each time revealed the presence of a metal foreign body (screw, nail, metal rod, and wire) passing through the frontal bone into the frontal lobe. In each situation, the foreign body was safely extracted with a favorable outcome. Despite the use of the latest imaging modalities, metal artifacts can

More inflammation but less brain-derived neurotrophic factor in antisocial personality disorder.

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is highly comorbid with substance use disorders (SUDs). We hypothesize that chronic neuroinflammation and the loss of neurotrophic factors prompts the pathogenesis of both disorders. We used ELISA to measure plasma levels of proinflammatory (tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α], C-reactive protein [CRP]) and anti-inflammatory factors (transforming growth factor-β1 [TGF-β1] and interleukin-10 [IL-10]), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in male patients with ASPD (n=74), SUDs (n=168), ASPD comorbid with SUDs (ASPD+SUDs) (n=438), and Healthy Controls (

Concurrent and predictive validity of antisocial personality disorder subtyping among substance abusers.

Three hundred seventy inpatient and outpatient substance abusers were divided according to presence and subtype of antisocial personality disorder (APD) into groups comparing: a) adult antisocial behavior (AAB) versus full APD; b) APD with low versus high sociopathy; c) APD with versus without lifetime depression; and d) APD with versus without other axis II disorders. Multivariate regression was used to predict the unique contribution to the variance in baseline and 12-month follow-up measures of substance use, psychiatric severity, and personality. The presence of comorbid axis II pathology

Six cases of patients with mental retardation who have antisocial personality disorder.

Evidence that antisocial personality disorder occurs in association with mental retardation is presented through case reports of six mildly to moderately retarded men who received a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder. The men were identified when referred by care providers for more thorough psychological and psychiatric assessments. Their histories were marked by thefts, rapes, multiple assaults, arson, and other predatory acts; a lack of remorse for such actions; criminal charges; and predisposing factors such as an impoverished family. Only one man had received the diagnosis of ant

Antisocial personality disorder, HIV risk behavior and retention in methadone maintenance therapy.

In a sample of 55 consecutive methadone maintenance admissions to our clinic, 42% were diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) using the National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule NIMH DIS. Individuals with ASPD exhibited greater risk for HIV infection as defined by more sexual contacts, needle use and equipment sharing. Data at 1 year follow-up were obtained on this group of patients. The objective was to compare the ASPD and non-ASPD groups with regards to demographics, drug abuse history, outcome and retention in treatment. There were no significant diff

Cascades From Early Adolescent Impulsivity to Late Adolescent Antisocial Personality Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder.

PURPOSE: The behavioral disinhibition model (BDM) posits that a liability toward impulsivity evident by early adolescence underlies the coemergence of antisocial behavior and alcohol use (i.e., problem behaviors) in early-adolescence to mid-adolescence, but that the subsequent development of these problem behaviors (rather than impulsivity itself) predicts the emergence of antisocial personality disorder (APD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in late adolescence. The present study was designed to test these predictions of the BDM from early to late adolescence. METHODS: We used five-year longit

Clinical study of the relation of borderline personality disorder to Briquet's syndrome (hysteria), somatization disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and substance abuse disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The criteria for borderline personality disorder seem to select patients with very high rates of Briquet's syndrome (hysteria), somatization disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and substance abuse disorders. This study was undertaken to determine whether systematic assessment of patients with borderline personality disorder would reveal characteristic features of that condition which would distinguish it from these other disorders. METHOD: Eighty-seven white female patients (75 in St. Louis and 12 in Milan, Italy) who had borderline personality disorder according to both the

Peripheral redox imbalance in antisocial personality disorder: Associations with aggression and impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative imbalance and inflammatory processes have been implicated in major psychiatric disorders, yet data on personality disorders remain scarce. This study evaluated peripheral redox balance and inflammatory status in men with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and examined their associations with aggression and impulsivity. METHODS: In this single-center cross-sectional case-control study, 51 men with ASPD and 51 healthy men were included. Fasting blood samples were analyzed for total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), total thiol (TT), native thiol (NT

Sleep architecture in homicidal women with antisocial personality disorder--a preliminary study.

The aim of the present study was to characterize sleep in severely violent women with antisocial personality disorder (ASP) as the primary diagnosis. Participants for this preliminary study were three drug-free female offenders ordered to undergo a forensic mental examination in a maximum security state mental hospital after committing homicide or attempted homicide. Ten healthy age- and gender-matched controls consisted of hospital staff with no history of physical violence. The most striking finding was the increased amount of slow wave sleep, particularly the deepest sleep stage, S4, in wom

Sex differences in psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder. A review and integration.

Although the correlates and causes of psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) have been the subject of extensive investigation, researchers in this area have until recently focused almost exclusively on males. As a consequence, relatively little is known about psychopathy and ASPD in females. In this paper, we review the empirical literature on sex differences in the base rates, mean symptom levels, correlates, and factor structure of psychopathy and ASPD. In addition, we discuss the potential sex-differentiated phenotypic expressions of psychopathy and ASPD (e.g., somatization

Serotonergic responsivity and behavioral dimensions in antisocial personality disorder with substance abuse.

In order to assess the possibility of altered serotonergic responsivity in antisocial personality disorder with substance abuse (ASP), 15 men with ASP and 12 controls were challenged with the serotonin agonist, m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP), and prolactin and cortisol responses were evaluated. Psychometric measures of hostility and aggression, impulsivity, cognitive tempo, and various aspects of sociopathy were also obtained. ASP subjects had a significantly reduced prolactin response to m-CPP compared with controls, and a significantly greater cortisol response. The prolactin responses sho

Mismatch negativity in paranoid, schizotypal, and antisocial personality disorders.

AIMS: The mismatch negativity (MMN) to frequency deviant tones has yielded conflicting results in patients with schizophrenia. This might be because Axis I schizophrenia overlaps with Axis II diagnoses such as paranoid or schizotypal personality disorders. This study was designed to address this issue. METHODS: We evaluated the auditory MMN to frequency deviance in 17 patients with paranoid, 15 schizotypal, and 16 antisocial personality disorders. These were compared to 25 healthy subjects. RESULTS: N1 to both deviant and standard tones was shorter in the paranoid group when compared to heal

A nomogram model to predict the risk for etomidate use disorder with antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of etomidate use disorder (EUD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) poses significant challenges in clinical assessment and management. This study aims to develop a predictive model to estimate the risk of ASPD in EUD patients. METHODS: Male patients with EUD were recruited from a drug rehabilitation center between March and December 2024. Behavioral, health, psychological, and sociodemographic variables were collected, and diagnoses of ASPD were established using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). The baseline variables were screene

A Systematic Literature Review of the Association Between Somatic Symptom Disorder and Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) and antisocial personality disorder (APSD) are found at higher rates within families compared to the general population. Both disorders are characterized by low serotonin levels, which may be attributed to polymorphisms in the dopa decarboxylase (DDC) gene. The polymorphism rs11575542 of the gene leads to decreasing the efficiency of aromatic l-amino decarboxylase (AADC) and serotonin levels in a person. The polymorphism is also associated with the development of somatic symptoms and sensation-seeking behavior, a trait underlying APSD. Hence, the role of this pol

Serotonergic function in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: relationship to later antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impulsive aggression in adulthood is associated with disturbances in serotonergic function. In contrast, research examining this association in childhood has yielded inconsistent results. AIMS: The current study examined the prospective relationship between serotonergic function measured in childhood and the later emergence of antisocial personality disorder. METHOD: Hormonal response to fenfluramine, an index of serotonergic function, was assessed in 58 children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder between 1990 and 1997 when they were aged 7-11 years.
