BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) refers to the tendency to fear physical sensations associated with anxiety due to concerns about potential physical, social, or cognitive consequences. Many previous studies were limited by the use of the anxiety sensitivity index (ASI) or the ASI-revised (ASI-R), which are both measurements with unitary or unstable structures. No recent study that has utilized the ASI-3 examined the relations between AS dimensions and depression. Thus, we examined multiple relationships between AS and anxiety disorders and depression using the ASI-3.

Anxiety disorders are among the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders in the United States - affecting over 40 million adults per year. Although anxiety disorders are commonly treated via psychotherapy and/or pharmacotherapy, there is also accumulating evidence to suggest that physical activity and exercise may play an important role in prevention and treatment. This chapter provides an extensive overview of literature examining the effects of physical activity, acute bouts of exercise, and chronic exercise training on several anxiety outcomes, primarily in adults. The collective evi

Until recently, there is considerable mess regarding the nature of anxiety in dementia. However, anxiety is common in this population affecting from 8% to 71% of prevalence, and resulted in poor outcome and quality of life, even after controlling for depression. Because a presentation of anxiety in the context of dementia can be different from typical early-onset anxiety disorder, it is not easy one to identify and quantify anxiety reliably. Moreover, differentiating anxiety from the depression and/or dementia itself also can be formidable task. Anxiety gradually decreases at the severe stages

The aim of present review of modern publications is characterize the relationship of anxiety with sleep organization. The performance of range of tasks was needed for this aim. In the first, it was necessary to have specified opinions on nature of anxiety, its definitions and ability of it study. In the second, it was necessary to have touched upon the anxious reaction and processes that define level of anxiety. In the third, the necessity of projection of anxiety on mechanisms of wakefulness and sleep has appeared. In the fourth, it was require to have summarized native experimental data and

Studies in the general population demonstrate that anxiety disorders are associated with impaired quality of life and function. Available evidence suggests that comorbid anxiety disorders are frequent among patients with epilepsy but that neither the interrelationships between them nor the impact of anxiety disorders on functional outcome is well studied. The study and management of anxiety disorders are further complicated by the occurrence of seizures, the temporal relationship between seizures and anxiety symptoms/syndromes, and the influence of antiepileptic drugs. Increased recognition of

The prevalence and the co-occurrence of anxiety disorders and alcoholism in individuals, families, and the general population have been documented in both epidemiologic and clinical investigations. In patients who fulfill the criteria for one of those conditions, clinicians should consider the possibility of the presence of the other disorder--currently, at a previous time, or at some point in the future. A lifetime history of alcohol abuse and anxiety disorders obtained from both the patient and the family members may assist in determining the appropriate treatment.

Current psychiatric classifications of anxiety are examined critically. In the European literature a specific cluster of symptoms is diagnostic of anxiety neurosis and their subsidiary classification is based on precipitating factors and duration of symptoms. In the American literature, exemplified by DSM-III, greater emphasis is placed on symptomatic classification and panic is given separate diagnostic status, both alone and in conjunction with agoraphobia. In both classifications generalized anxiety is at the bottom of a diagnostic hierarchy so that all other symptoms take precedence. It is

Anxiety is an all-inclusive concept incorporating somatic symptoms (palpitations, dizziness, dyspnea), emotional and cognitive elements (negative affect, fear, worry, rumination) and behavioral components (e.g., avoidance). The aim of this study was to examine the specific neural correlates associated with anxiety phenotypes (worry, rumination, somatic anxiety) and negative affect (neuroticism). Twenty-nine anxious participants and 30 healthy controls were included in the study. We analyzed seed-based intrinsic connectivity and used correlation maps in a multivariable regression model to descr

Clinically significant separation anxiety disorder in childhood leads to adult panic disorder and other anxiety disorders. The prevailing pathophysiological model of anxiety disorders, which emphasizes extinction deficits of fear-conditioned responses, does not fully consider the role of separation anxiety. Pathological early childhood attachments have far-reaching consequences for the later adult ability to experience and internalize positive relationships in order to develop mental capacities for self-soothing, anxiety tolerance, affect modulation, and individuation. Initially identified in

The present study examined the psychometric properties, including discriminant validity and clinical utility, of the youth self-report and parent-report forms of the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC) among youth with anxiety disorders. The sample included parents and youth (N = 488, 49.6% male) ages 7 to 17 who participated in the Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Study. Although the typical low agreement between parent and youth self-reports was found, the MASC evidenced good internal reliability across MASC subscales and informants. The main MASC subscales (i.e., Physical

Research focused on psychological risk factors for anxiety psychopathology has led to better conceptualization of these conditions as well as pointed toward preventative interventions. Anxiety sensitivity (AS) has been well-established as an anxiety risk factor, while distress tolerance (DT) is a related construct that has received little empirical exploration within the anxiety psychopathology literature. The current investigation sought to extend the existing literature by examining both DT and the relationship between DT and AS across a number of anxiety symptom dimensions, including panic,

OBJECTIVE: To examine the interaction of specific anxiety subtypes and psychosis.
INTRODUCTION: Accumulating evidence suggests that anxiety and its disorders play a significant role in patients with schizophrenia, but few studies have examined multiple types of anxiety and how they interact with different symptoms of schizophrenia.
METHODS: Thirty-two patients diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were assessed through self-report measures and interviewer rating scales to examine symptoms of psychosis and anxiety.
RESULTS: A majority of patients (62%) were diagnosed with

Over the last few decades, zebrafish have proven to be a valuable tool for biomedical research, with advantages mainly in the use of embryos and adults. The larval stage, on the contrary, is somewhat less used, generally due to a lack of protocols compared with the other stages. In this study, we propose a protocol to study anxiety-like behavior in larvae using the plus maze with ramp (PMR). In the PMR, anxious behavior is measured by the time spent on the flat arms relative to the ramped arms of the apparatus. In the first phase of the study, animals at 5, 14, and 21 days postfertilization (d

ObjectiveComorbid anxiety occurs often in MS and is associated with disability progression. Polygenic scores offer a possible means of anxiety risk prediction but often have not been validated outside the original discovery population. We aimed to investigate the association between the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2-item scale polygenic score with anxiety in MS.MethodsUsing a case-control design, participants from Canadian, UK Biobank, and United States cohorts were grouped into cases (MS/comorbid anxiety) or controls (MS/no anxiety, anxiety/no immune disease or healthy). We used multiple anx

The current study was designed to examine diagnostic validity of social anxiety disorder (SOC) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in youth, and implications of comorbidity of the disorders for nosology. Children (n = 130) with SOC, GAD, or both disorders (COMORBID) and their parents were administered diagnostic interviews and self-report measures. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) and ANOVAs were performed for the three groups (SOC, GAD, COMORBID). Second-order CFAs for both parent and child informants suggested that SOC and GAD are two specific facets of a general anxiety factor. ANOVA
