OBJECTIVES: Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is generally benign in youth but is often accompanied by somatic sensations that resemble anxiety symptoms. This study examined the prevalence and severity of separation anxiety disorder in children and adolescents with MVP and explored associations with parental attitudes and anxiety sensitivity (AS).
METHODS: Sixty-five youth with MVP (ages 7-18 years) and 60 age-matched healthy controls underwent structured cardiologic and mental health evaluation. Diagnoses were established using the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence suggesting that separation anxiety can occur in adults. We aimed to determine temperament and character dimensions in patients with adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD) compared to patients with panic disorder (PD) and healthy subjects.
METHODS: The study sample included 77 outpatients with ASAD, 44 outpatients with a PD with or without agoraphobia diagnosis, and 35 healthy subjects. ASAD diagnoses were confirmed with Structured Clinical Interview for Separation Anxiety Symptoms. Other measures included Adulthood Separation Anxiety Checklist, Separati

The development of school phobia has been reported in some patients with Tourette syndrome treated with haloperidol. The author reports on a patient who developed school phobia on each of three trials with pimozide, a neuroleptic chemically similar to haloperidol, and proposes the term "neuroleptic separation anxiety syndrome." The syndrome is clinically indistinguishable from DSM-III criteria for school phobia (separation anxiety disorder). Tricyclic antidepressants may have a therapeutic or prophylactic effect. It is not known whether this neuroleptic side effect occurs in patients other tha

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that childhood separation anxiety disorder may be associated with a heightened risk for the development of other disorders in adulthood. The authors conducted a meta-analysis to examine the relationship between childhood separation anxiety disorder and future psychopathology.
METHOD: PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase were searched for studies published through December 2011. Case-control, prospective, and retrospective cohort studies comparing children with and without separation anxiety disorder with regard to future panic disorder, major depressive disorder, any anxi

Separation anxiety in children with severe school refusal evokes often worry about the future with regard to professional career and social integration. This study highlights the native outcome of inpatient children with separation anxiety disorder. 18 of 24 children, who required at the age of 6-13 years between 1996-2002 inpatient treatment because of separation anxiety disorder were assessed at follow up. Diagnostic Interview for Mental Disorders in Children and Adolescents (Unnewehr et al. 2005) was used and academic and social outcome was explored. The follow-up time ranged from 4.3 to 11

Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532003eng
We conducted a longitudinal study of young children with clinical, subclinical, or nonclinical levels of separation anxiety to evaluate the diagnostic stability and concomitant parent and family variables of separation anxiety disorder (SAD). Youngsters were assessed at age 3 years (n = 60) and 3.5 years later (n = 44). Data were collected from children, parents, teachers, and clinicians. Results revealed that most diagnoses of SAD were not stable during this developmental period, as many children drifted toward subclinical or nonclinical status. In addition, children with clinical SAD, compar

Separation anxiety has traditionally been characterized and assessed as a disorder that is unique to childhood. Yet the core symptoms of separation anxiety, i.e. excessive and often disabling distress when faced with actual or perceived separation from major attachment figures, may persist or even arise during adulthood. We report on the psychometric properties of a new structured clinical interview designed to assess symptoms of separation anxiety as experienced both during childhood and adulthood. This instrument, called the Structured Clinical Interview for Separation Anxiety Symptoms (or S

This paper provides an overview of the phenomenology, longitudinal outcome data, assessment and management of separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in children and adolescents. SAD is qualitatively different from early worries, and is characterised by an abnormal reactivity to real or imagined separation from attachment figures, which significantly interferes with daily activities and developmental tasks. Different epidemiological studies indicate a prevalence of 4 to 5% in children and adolescents. In contrast to other anxiety disorders, 50 to 75% of children with SAD come from homes of low socio

OBJECTIVE: Early bonding abnormalities have been associated with a range of anxiety and depressive disorders in adulthood, but no specific parental patterns have emerged for particular disorders. The present study investigated the possibility that parental overprotectiveness may be linked to a risk of separation anxiety (SA) in adulthood.
METHOD: Two samples were recruited: volunteers (n = 34) whose major anxieties focused on separation concerns, and adult anxiety clinic patients (n = 37) who were diagnosed with panic disorder. Parental characteristics and early SA were assessed by dichotomis

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric disorders during childhood. They are often persistent and are associated with a number of negative outcomes. Therefore, effective treatment is required.
AIM: To present an overview of placebo-controlled studies of pharmacotherapy for social phobia, generalised anxiety disorder and separation anxiety disorder in children an adolescents and to determine which medication is the most effective.
METHOD: The literature was reviewed using Pubmed.
RESULTS: Nine randomised double-blind studies on the efficacy of pharmacotherapy f

METHOD: Overall, 508 outpatients with anxiety and mood disorders were assessed by the structured clinical interview for diagnostic and statistical manual (IV edition) axis I disorders for principal diagnosis and comorbidity and by other appropriate instruments for separation anxiety into adulthood or childhood.
RESULTS: Overall, 105 subjects (20.7%) were assessed as having adult separation anxiety disorder without a history of childh

Social bond disruption is increasingly recognized as a potent psychosocial stressor with widespread implications for mental and physical health. The monogamous California mouse (Peromyscus californicus), which forms enduring pair bonds and exhibits distress upon separation, provides a translational model for understanding the neuroimmune consequences of social loss. We hypothesized that partner separation would sensitize neuroimmune responses to systemic inflammation. Adult male and female mice were assigned to one of three housing conditions: naive (isolate-housed), partner (pair-housed for 2

Separation Anxiety Disorder(SAD) is one of the earliest anxiety disorders. The effect of this disorder on the performance of children and adolescents reveals the need for awareness of the prevalence and comorbidity of this disorder in each region. This study is a cross-sectional analytical study implemented in all provinces of Iran. The instrument used in this study is the Persian version of the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version(K-SADA-PL) questionnaire. The total number of participants was 29,699. The overall prevalence of SAD was 5.3%. The

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this clinical report is to investigate whether symptoms of separation anxiety disorder can occur in adulthood.
CLINICAL PICTURE: Three cases are described to illustrate that adults may experience: wide-ranging separation anxiety symptoms, such as extreme anxiety and fear, when separated from major attachment figures; avoidance of being alone; and fears that harm will befall those close to them. Symptoms of panic appeared to be secondary to separation anxiety, and none of the patients fulfilled criteria for dependent personality disorder.
TREATMENT: Group cognitive behav

When patients with panic disorders are divided into two groups, those that are without any signs of phobic avoidance and those that are frankly agoraphobic, we see a differential premorbid history of separation anxiety in childhood with school phobia. The former group we found to be without these problems, while the latter demonstrated a history of school phobia in the majority of cases (60 per cent). This may indicate that uncomplicated panic disorder and agoraphobia with panic attacks are not always differential cross-sections of the same disease process, or different levels of severity of t
