BACKGROUND: Post-apartheid, the education system shifted its focus from a segregated education system to an inclusive education system, which resulted in greater consideration of the role and function of special needs schools. In 2014 the National Department of Basic Education developed and implemented an inclusive approach and policies to provide guidelines on the running of special needs schools (SNS). The study was conducted in six SNS in Ekurhuleni South District, South Africa.
OBJECTIVES: The study explored the experiences of teachers and healthcare workers when implementing policies in

Despite South Africa's history of violent political conflict, and the link between stressful experiences and smoking in the literature, no public health study has examined South Africans' experiences of human rights violations and smoking. Using data from participants in the nationally representative cross-sectional South Africa Stress and Health study (SASH), this analysis examined the association between respondent smoking status and both human rights violations experienced by the respondent and violations experienced by the respondents' close friends and family members. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this anthropological study was to create an understanding of school-related violence experienced by adolescents in the context of chronic poverty in a South African community.
METHOD: Qualitative methods of data collection such as participant observation, interviews, and group discussions were utilized for data collection. Sixteen children and three adults in turn kept diaries and wrote reports during the research period of three and one-half years (June 1992-December 1995). All the Standard seven pupils (N = 76) of the local school completed a self-concept questionnaire

The influence of various covariates (including weight, race, smoking, gender, age, mild-to-moderate alcohol intake, and body surface area) on the population pharmacokinetic parameters of phenytoin in adult epileptic patients in South Africa was investigated. The parameters were the maximum metabolic rate (Vm) and the Michaelis-Menten (MM) constant (Km) of phenytoin. The study population comprised 332 black and colored epileptic patients (note: "black" refers to indigenous people of South Africa, who speak one of the Bantu languages as their native language; "colored" refers to people considere

BACKGROUND: For much of the 20th century, the South African mining industry had a statutory compensation system for pneumoconiosis and tuberculosis characterized by gross racial inequality. This study examines the impact of inflation over the period 1973-2024 on the real value of miners' lung disease compensation, including the effect of the dropping of formal racial discrimination after 1993.
METHODS: Sources of information included legislation, government reports, notices, and Gazettes, and mining industry reports.
RESULTS: From 1973 to 1993, high rates of inflation hollowed out the value

BACKGROUND/AIM: South Africa carries a high burden of alcohol abuse. The effects of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy are most pronounced in poor, rural communities. Earlier research suggests that children with prenatal alcohol exposure have poor social behaviour; however, to date, no research has investigated their playfulness. This study investigated the differences in playfulness of children with and without prenatal alcohol exposure.
METHODS: Grade one learners with a positive history of prenatal alcohol exposure (n = 15) and a reference group without a positive history of pre

INTRODUCTION: Muslim mental health is an emerging field of inquiry in the global South. Understanding how mental health conditions are interpreted within diverse Muslim communities is important for culturally responsive psychological care.
METHODS: This qualitative study explored psychologists' experiences of providing services to Muslim clients in the Western Cape, South Africa, and explored psychologists' accounts of explanatory models of mental health conditions encountered in therapeutic practice. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 clinical and counseling psychologists prac

Research on early life adversity and later-life cognitive function is conflicting, with little evidence from low-income settings. We investigated associations between adverse childhood experiences and cognitive function in an older population who grew up under racial segregation during South African apartheid. Data were from 1,871 adults aged 40-79 in the population-representative "Health and Ageing in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa" in 2015. The adverse childhood experiences were having a parent unemployed for > 6 months; having parents who argued or foug

BACKGROUND: Motherhood is a crucial yet understudied aspect of maternal health, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where inequalities and focus on clinical outcomes impact care. The concept of maternal subjectivities and matrescence, has limited exploration in South African public health. This article uses qualitative longitudinal data from the Bukhali trial to examine the social dynamics that shape maternal identities among young women.
METHODS: Sixty women, mostly single, aged 22-34, participated in multiple interviews from 2023 to 2025. Using Neale's (2021) approach, we created case profile

Following 50 years of apartheid, South Africa introduced visionary health policy committing to the right to health as part of a primary health care (PHC) approach. Implementation is seriously challenged, however, in an often-dysfunctional health system with scarce resources and a complex burden of avoidable mortality persists. Our aim was to develop a process generating evidence of practical relevance on implementation processes among people excluded from access to health systems. Informed by health policy and systems research, we developed a collaborative learning platform in which we worked

South Africa and other areas of sub-Saharan Africa have in the past 20 years undergone rapid demographical changes, largely due to urbanisation and changes in lifestyle. This rapid change has led to a marked increase in specific cardiac conditions, such as hypertensive heart disease and coronary artery disease (with the highest prevalence in the middle-aged population), in conjunction with a range of other heart diseases, which are historically common in Africa-eg, rheumatic heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and unoperated congenital heart disease. The short supply of well-equipped screening fa

Large numbers of tourists visit South Africa every year. Travelers to urban areas are at little risk of contracting an infectious disease, however the adventure traveler is at increased risk. Yellow fever is not known to occur in South Africa. Malaria is endemic in Mpumalanga and KwaZula-Natal. Schistosomiasis is endemic in large parts of the country. Although rabies is found throughout the country, only a small number of human cases is reported. High risk areas are KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces. The incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is high a

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies have emphasized the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on brain development, traditionally in heavily exposed participants. However, less is known about how naturally occurring community patterns of PAE (including light to moderate exposure) affect brain development, particularly in consideration of commonly occurring concurrent impacts of prenatal tobacco exposure (PTE).
METHODS: Three hundred thirty-two children (ages 8 to 12) living in South Africa's Cape Flats townships underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging. During pregnancy, their mothers

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes prevalence is 1.4-fold higher among Black/African American adults than the general U.S.
POPULATION: African Americans are also disproportionately represented among lower-income groups with reduced access to healthy food retail, factors closely tied to the dietary exposures examined here. Dietary patterns emerge from multilevel influences, including food environments, cultural practices, and structural determinants. This scoping review, organized using the socio-ecological model (SEM), synthesized dietary determinants of type 2 diabetes across five SEM levels specif

BACKGROUND: While the HIV epidemic in South Africa had a later onset than epidemics in other southern African countries, prevalence grew rapidly during the 1990's when the country was going through socio-political changes with the end of Apartheid. South Africa currently has the largest number of people living with HIV in the world and the epidemic is dominated by a unique subtype, HIV-1 subtype C. This large epidemic is also characterized by high level of genetic diversity. We hypothesize that this diversity is due to multiple introductions of the virus during the period of change. In this pa

BACKGROUND: While there is empirical evidence to support associations between psychopathy scale ratings and offending or deviant behaviours, suggested as support for a unified theory of crime, evidence to date has been mainly from countries with high economic ratings and Western philosophies. In countries with a wide range of cultural groups and languages and a complex history of colonisation and apartheid, such scale ratings and correlations may differ.
AIMS: To explore the psychometric properties of the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory-Short Version (YPI-S) and its applicability and rela

Black women in the United States have experienced substantial improvements in health during the last century, yet health disparities persist. These health disparities are in large part a reflection of the inequalities experienced by Black women on a host of social and economic measures. In this paper, we examine the structural contributors to social and economic conditions that create the landscape for persistent health inequities among Black women. Demographic measures related to the health status and health (in)equity of Black women are reviewed. Current rates of specific physical and mental

WHY WE NEED THIS RAPID REVIEW: In South Africa, transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) children and adolescents continue to navigate health systems shaped by deep inequalities, limited specialised services, and persistent stigma. Here at home, these young people too often move through environments marked by the legacies of apartheid, economic exclusion, uneven service delivery, and ongoing social prejudice. These layered forms of inequality shape how families, caregivers, teachers, and communities are able to support the young people they love.At the same time, international debates about gender
