Mean warming enhances insect resilience to high temperatures: species-specific evidence from two wheat aphids.

Under climate change, the gradual increase in average temperature is often accompanied by more frequent extreme heat events. However, their biological effects have largely been studied in isolation, overlooking the key interactions between them. Specifically, in short-lived ectotherms, it remains unclear whether mild thermal history across multiple generations alters their thermal performance, thereby influencing their response to subsequent high temperature. Here, we addressed this important issue using a full factorial experiment in which two global aphid species, Sitobion avenae and Rhopalo

Effect of Cd-Zn compound contamination on the physiological response of broad bean and aphids.

INTRODUCTION: The heavy metal elements cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) often coexist in nature, making the environmental media more prone to compound pollution. However, research on the toxic effect of the Cd-Zn combination is still lacking, and the underlying toxic mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: Therefore, in this experiment, we established four treatment groups with different ratios of Cd-Zn compound stress for the broad bean, Vicia faba L., and aphids, Megoura crassicauda, to explore the growth and physiological adaptation mechanisms under different levels of mixed heavy metal stress. Oscillation, synchrony, and multi-factor patterns between cereal aphids and parasitoid populations in southern Brazil.

In different parts of the world, aphid populations and their natural enemies are influenced by landscapes and climate. In the Neotropical region, few long-term studies have been conducted, maintaining a gap for comprehension of the effect of meteorological variables on aphid population patterns and their parasitoids in field conditions. This study describes the general patterns of oscillation in cereal winged aphids and their parasitoids, selecting meteorological variables and evaluating their effects on these insects. Aphids exhibit two annual peaks, one in summer-fall transition and the othe

Tobacco overexpressing β-ocimene induces direct and indirect responses against aphids in receiver tomato plants.

In the last decade plant-to-plant communication has received an increasing attention, particularly for the role of Volatile Organic Compounds as possible elicitors of plant defense. The role of β-ocimene as an interspecific elicitor of plant defense has been recently assessed in multitrophic systems including different plant species (Solanaceae, Poaceae, legumes) and different pest species including chewer insects and phytophagous mites. Both chewer insects and phytophagous mites are known to elicit specific plant defensive pathways which are different (at least in part) from those elicited by

Wolbachia Infection in Two Species: Novel Views on the Colonization Ability of Wolbachia in Aphids.

Wolbachia pipientis (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae) is an intracellular symbiont residing in arthropods and filarial nematodes. Sixteen supergroups have been described from different host taxa. Four supergroups A, B, M, and N were found in aphids according to prior studies. The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, are typical polyphagous species with global distributions. We conducted an extensive and systematic survey of Wolbachia infections in these aphids from China. High incidences of Wolbachia infection were detected. The total infection incidence was

Ant-mediated indirect negative effects of aphids on spider mites living on the same plant.

Some aphid species are known to have mutualistic relationships with tending ants; that is, the aphids supply the ants with honeydew and are protected by the ants. Although spider mites and honeydew-producing aphids often live on the same host plant, it has not previously been determined whether the ants tending these aphids affect spider mite survival. Using replicated microcosms, each containing an artificial ant nest, we compared experimentally the survival of two-spotted spider mites on kidney bean plants with and without cowpea aphids. Our results showed significantly fewer spider mites on

Plant-mediated interactions between shoot-feeding aphids and root-feeding nematodes depend on nitrate fertilization.

The plant metabolite composition is modulated by various abiotic and biotic factors including nutrient availability and herbivory. In turn, induced changes in plant quality can affect herbivore performance and mediate indirect interactions between spatially separated herbivores sharing a host. Studies on plant-mediated herbivore interactions have been carried out at single fertilization regimes only, but we hypothesized that nutrient availability modifies these interactions. Therefore, we studied the interactions between two vascular tissue herbivores, the aboveground feeding aphid Brevicoryne

Sources of variation in the interaction between three cereal aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and wheat (Poaceae).

The relative contributions of host plant, herbivore species and clone to variation in the interaction between cereal aphids and wheat were investigated using five clones each of three species, Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus), Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) and Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), on seedlings of two cultivars of Triticum aestivum L. and one cultivar of Triticum durum Desf. More individuals and biomass of R. padi than of the other two species were produced on seedlings. The three wheat cultivars lost similar amounts of biomass as a result of infestation by aphids, with the amount lost dep

[Repellent effect of volatile oil from whitefly (Syngonium podophyllum) on aphids and its chemical constituents].

The interference effect of volatile oil from whitefly (Syngonium podophyllum) on aptera aphid, guard aphid (Aphis gossypii), mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi) and red peach aphid (Myzus persicae) was studied by using four arms olfraetometes. The results showed that the volatile oil had distinct repelling effect. The staying periods of test aphids in test areas were obviously shorter than in control areas, and the selecting frequencies were less than the control, too. The volatile oil did not show repelling effect on red peach aphid at the test concentrations. The components of the volatile oil

Molecular and transcriptional regulation of plant defense responses to aphid infestation.

Aphids are one of the important agricultural pests causing substantial yield losses in crops grown across the globe. Aphids are known to cause direct feeding damages and indirect losses due to sooty mold development and plant virus transmission. Plants respond to these attacks by mounting a complex defense response at the infested sites and systemic levels. This multilayered defense response involves a highly coordinated network of phytohormones and other signalling components like Ca2+, mitogen activated protein kinases and reactive oxygen species. Key to these complex responses is a well-reg

Aphid endosymbionts revisited: molecular detection, diversity, and population dynamics.

The diversity of endosymbionts detected in the same aphid hosts often varies markedly across studies. Some of this variation may reflect genuine biological differences associated with climate, host plants, natural enemies and/or pest management, but it may also arise from the differences in molecular and analytic approaches used in detecting and characterizing endosymbiont diversity. The goal of this review is to highlight inconsistencies and how they can be resolved. This is important if the intriguing effects of endosymbionts established from detailed laboratory studies are to be linked to t

Compensatory phenolic induction dynamics in aspen after aphid infestation.

Condensed tannins (CTs) are polyphenolics and part of the total phenolic (TP) pool that shape resistance in aspen (Populus tremula). CTs are negatively associated with pathogens, but their resistance properties against herbivores are less understood. CTs shape resistance to pathogens and chewing herbivores and could also shape resistance to aphids. Being chemical pools that are highly variable it can further be questioned whether CT-shaped resistance is better described by constitutive levels, by the induced response potential, or by both. Here, aspen genotypes were propagated and selected to

Chromatin-remodelling proteins of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris).

Aphids display extraordinary developmental plasticity in response to environmental cues. These differential responses to environmental changes may be due in part to changes in gene expression patterns. To understand the molecular basis for aphid developmental plasticity, we attempted to identify the chromatin-remodelling machinery in the recently sequenced pea aphid genome. We find that the pea aphid possesses a complement of metazoan histone modifying enzymes with greater gene family diversity than that seen in a number of other arthropods. Several genes appear to have undergone recent duplic

Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) resistance in wheat near-isogenic lines.

Plant and aphid biomass, photosynthetic pigment (chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids) concentrations, and chlorophyll a/b and chlorophyll/carotenoid ratios were quantified in aphid-infested 'Tugela' near-isogenic lines (Tugela, Tugela-Dn1, Tugela-Dn2, and Tugela-Dn5). The objectives were to quantify changes of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids) caused by aphid feeding and assess resistance of wheat isolines through aphid and plant biomass analysis. Biomass of bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)-infested plants was lower than Russi

An analysis of plant-aphid interactions by different microarray hybridization strategies.

Aphids have long been considered 'stealthy' herbivores that subvert a plant's induced defenses and manipulate its source-sink signaling, but these hypotheses are largely untested at a transcriptional level. We analysed gene expression in native tobacco plants (Nicotiana attenuata) infested with Myzus nicotianae aphids, without resorting to the use of clip-cages, with a cDNA microarray containing 240 defense-related N. attenuata genes. Using a hybridization scheme ('ratio analysis' and 'state analysis') broadly applicable in two-factor analyses, we examined how the aphids influenced source--sin

Soldiers effectively defend aphid colonies against predators in the field.

Morphologically specialized soldiers occur in more than 50 aphid species in the families Pemphigidae and Hormaphididae. To study the effectiveness of soldiers of the gall-forming aphid, Pemphigus spyrothecae Pass., in protecting their galls against natural levels of predation, we manipulated the proportions of soldiers and non-soldiers in sets of galls still attached to poplar trees in the field. Galls with 50 soldiers and 50 non-soldiers were approximately 10 times less likely to be attacked by predators than galls that contained 100 non-soldier aphids. There were significantly fewer live aph

Central Projections of Antennal Sensory Neurons in the Aphid Myzus persicae.

The aphid Myzus persicae is an important agricultural pest relying on olfactory cues to find food and escape from predators. The considerable difficulty of anatomical manipulation and other related technical challenges may underlie the absence of studies systematically mapping the central projections of antennal sensory neurons in its central nervous system. We used mass stain, immunohistochemistry, laser scanning confocal microscope and three-dimensional reconstruction techniques to trace the central projections of sensory neurons from the antennae. The ipsilateral antennal nerve targets main

Plant viruses induce plant volatiles that are detected by aphid parasitoids.

Aphis gossypii (Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae) aphids are vectors of important plant viruses among which cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and potato virus Y (PVY). Virus-infected plants attract aphid vectors and affect their behavior and growth performance either positively or negatively depending on mode of transmission. Viruses cause changes in the composition and the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by the plant that attract aphids. The aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemani (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) has been shown to have higher parasitism and survival rates on aphids fed on virus-

Resistance of Wheat Accessions to the English Grain Aphid Sitobion avenae.

The English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae, is a major pest species of wheat crops; however, certain varieties may have stronger resistance to infestation than others. Here, we investigated 3 classical resistance mechanisms (antixenosis, antibiosis, and tolerance) by 14 wheat varieties/lines to S. avenae under laboratory and field conditions. Under laboratory conditions, alatae given the choice between 2 wheat varieties, strongly discriminated against certain varieties. Specifically, the 'Amigo' variety had the lowest palatability to S. avenae alatae of all varieties. 'Tm' (Triticum monococcum),

Plant-generated artificial small RNAs mediated aphid resistance.

BACKGROUND: RNA silencing is an important mechanism for regulation of endogenous gene expression and defense against genomic intruders in plants. This natural defense system was adopted to generate virus-resistant plants even before the mechanism of RNA silencing was unveiled. With the clarification of that mechanism, transgenic antiviral plants were developed that expressed artificial virus-specific hairpin RNAs (hpRNAs) or microRNAs (amiRNAs) in host plants. Previous works also showed that plant-mediated RNA silencing technology could be a practical method for constructing insect-resistant p
