Apoprotein E-free high density lipoproteins (HDL) bind to various cells and cell membrane preparations with properties typical of ligand-receptor interactions. This specific binding can be inhibited by treatment of HDL with tetranitromethane (TNM). During treatment of HDL with TNM, in addition to the expected nitration of tyrosine residues, cross-linking of lipids to apoproteins and of apoproteins to each other occurs. An enzyme-linked immunoassay to quantitate lung surfactant apoproteins (15 to 250 ng/ml) in human amniotic fluid is described. Serum lipoprotein and apoprotein concentrations were monitored for 24 weeks in 26 postmenopausal women treated with conjugated equine estrogens (0.625 mg/day) with the addition of dydrogesterone (10 mg/day) for the last 12 days of each 28 day cycle. Fenofibrate in doses of 300 mg/day was administered for 3 consecutive months to 31 patients with type IIa, IIb, III or IV hyperlipoproteinaemia (HLP). Mean plasma cholesterol levels decreased by 22% in type IIa (n = 15), by 19% in type IIb (n = 10), by 51% in type III (n = 2) and by 5% in type IV (n = 4) HLP. Here, we characterized the effect of EE on CYP2J2, a major human P450 isoform that participates in metabolism of arachidonic acid. Three monoclonal antibodies, PC6, PE10, and PE12, were used for immunohistochemical studies of human lungs by immunoperoxidase staining.
