Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Binge Eating Based on the Addictive Appetite Model and Specialist Supportive Clinical Management with Adjunct Motivational Enhancement Therapy for Patients with Bulimia Nervosa: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the first-line treatment for bulimia nervosa (BN), standardizing treatment approaches may create differences in acceptability and efficacy between Wester and non-Western countries. METHODS: The retrospective cohort study investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of psychological therapies for BN in a Korean population. A total of 227 Korean patients with BN from a university hospital were included. Of these, 125 received CBT for binge eating based on the addictive appetite model, while 102 received specialist supportive clinical man

Understanding Problems With Sleep, Sexual Functioning, Energy, and Appetite Among Patients Who Access Transdiagnostic Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Depression: Qualitative Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Transdiagnostic internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (T-ICBT) is an effective treatment for anxiety and depression, and nowadays, there is interest in exploring ways to optimize T-ICBT in routine care. T-ICBT programs are designed to address the primary cognitive-affective and behavioral symptoms of anxiety and depression (eg, low mood, worry, anhedonia, and avoidance). Treatment also has the potential to resolve other symptom concerns (eg, sleep disruption, sexual dysfunction, lack of energy, and appetite or weight changes). Having additional information regarding the e

Medial nucleus accumbens dopamine receptors modulate motivation for wheel running in male mice.

Abnormal motivation for natural rewards is a hallmark of various psychiatric disorders, including behavioral addiction. The mesolimbic dopamine pathway has been identified as a critical modulator of motivated behavior primarily based on studies using food-reinforced operant tasks. However, the focus on food rewards in previous studies limits the generalizability of these findings to other natural rewards implicated in behavioral addiction. In this study, we investigated the reinforcing and high motivational properties of wheel running in rodents by developing a wheel running-reinforced operant

Effects of sibutramine on the appetitive and consummatory aspects of feeding in non-human primates.

This study examined how sibutramine (0.06-4.0 mg/kg, i.m.), a clinically effective weight-loss medication which increases extracellular serotonin and norepinephrine levels, affected the appetitive and consummatory aspects of feeding of non-human primates. The effects were compared to the effects of the positive control dexfenfluramine (2.0-6.0 mg/kg, p.o.), which primarily increases extracellular serotonin levels. Baboons had access to food 24 h each day, but they had to complete a two-phase operant procedure in order to eat. Responding on one lever during a 30-min appetitive phase was require

Styles of oroalimentary behavior: relationship with modulation of emotional behavior and myographic tension of the oral region.

The relationship between styles of oroalimentary behavior and both modulation of aggressive behavior and myographic tension at rest for some muscles engaged in the process of mastication was examined for 24 women. Our data suggested an inverse relation between outward overt hostility and oral appetitive hyperactivation with or without partial masticatory components. Moreover, the oral appetitive activation was negatively correlated with the myographic tension of oral region, particularly the right masseter.

The Histaminergic Tuberomamillary Nucleus Is Involved in Appetite for Sex, Water and Amphetamine.

The histaminergic system is one component of the ascending arousal system which is involved in wakefulness, neuroendocrine control, cognition, psychiatric disorders and motivation. During the appetitive phase of motivated behaviors the arousal state rises to an optimal level, thus giving proper intensity to the behavior. Previous studies have demonstrated that the histaminergic neurons show an earlier activation during the appetitive phase of feeding, compared to other ascending arousal system nuclei, paralleled with a high increase in arousal state. Lesions restricted to the histaminergic neu

A molecular dissociation between cued and contextual appetitive learning.

In appetitive Pavlovian learning, animals learn to associate discrete cues or environmental contexts with rewarding outcomes, and these cues and/or contexts can potentiate an ongoing instrumental response for reward. Although anatomical substrates underlying cued and contextual learning have been proposed, it remains unknown whether specific molecular signaling pathways within the striatum underlie one form of learning or the other. Here, we show that while the striatum-enriched isoform of adenylyl cyclase (AC5) is required for cued appetitive Pavlovian learning, it is not required for context

Conditioned changes in appetitive and consummatory responses to flavors paired with oral or nutrient reinforcement among adult rats.

Recent studies of the behavioral organization of conditioned flavor preferences have suggested the involvement of at least two separate learning systems-an appetitive response system sensitive to the oral hedonic properties of the reinforcer, and a consummatory response system sensitive to its nutrient properties. However, these prior studies were conducted with weanling rats, that differ from adults in terms of their prior experience with food, their learning competencies, and the peculiar ontogenetic constraints on their behavior. It is, therefore, unknown whether flavor preference behaviors

Cognitive-behavioral therapy and nutritional counseling in the treatment of bulimia nervosa and binge eating.

The goals of manual-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and nutritional counseling for eating disorders are similar, namely, eliminating dysfunctional patterns of eating. Modifying these behaviors requires specific therapeutic expertise in the principles and procedures of behavior change that is not typically part of the training of nutritionists and dieticians or mental health professionals without specific expertise. We discuss ways in which principles of behavior change can be applied to eating disorders by non-CBT experts. Specific nutritional rehabilitation programs have the potentia

Checking responses of goal- and sign-trackers are differentially affected by threat in a rodent analog of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), functional behaviors such as checking that a door is locked become dysfunctional, maladaptive, and debilitating. However, it is currently unknown how aversive and appetitive motivations interact to produce functional and dysfunctional behavior in OCD. Here we show a double dissociation in the effects of anxiogenic cues and sensitivity to rewarding stimuli on the propensity to develop functional and dysfunctional checking behavior in a rodent analog of OCD, the observing response task (ORT). While anxiogenic manipulations of perceived threat (presentation

The acquisition of an appetite.

Unlike older animals, weanling-age rats do not seek water to drink when they are dehydrated, despite the fact that a physiological sensitivity to dehydration is present very soon after birth. We demonstrate here that the appetitive behaviors needed to approach and obtain water become linked to dehydration only as a result of specific postnatal learning experience. Preventing early experience with dehydration retards the developmental emergence of dehydration-induced, water-oriented behavior in young rats. But a single pairing of water with dehydration can establish an appetitive response. Thes

Differential effects of dopamine antagonists infused to the medial preoptic area on the sexual behavior of female rats primed with estrogen and progesterone.

Dopamine (DA) in the medial preoptic area (mPOA) is important for the control of appetitive aspects of sexual behavior in the female rat. Recently, following infusions of DA agonists to the mPOA of females primed with estradiol benzoate (EB) alone, we found that the ratio of D1R/D2R activity within the mPOA determines the expression of appetitive behaviors (Graham and Pfaus, 2010). To further the knowledge of this mechanism, the present experiments examined the effects of intra-mPOA infusions of selective DA receptor antagonists. Ovariectomized, sexually-experienced rats primed with EB and pro

Food restriction dissociates sexual motivation, sexual performance, and the rewarding consequences of copulation in female Syrian hamsters.

Animals can switch their behavioral priorities from ingestive to sex behaviors to optimize reproductive success in environments where energy fluctuates. We hypothesized that energy availability differentially affects the appetitive (motivation), consummatory (performance), and learned (rewarding) components of behavior. In Experiment 1, appetitive and consummatory aspects of sex behavior were dissociated in the majority of female Syrian hamsters restricted to 75% of their ad libitum food intake for between 8 and 11 days. Food restriction significantly inhibited vaginal scent marking, decreased

Male isolation: a behavioral representation of the pheromonal 'female effect' in donkey (Equus asinus).

The appearance of a decisive component of the sexual response to chemosexual signals in the male donkey was investigated through a comparison of the variations in the time-span of the behavioral classes and units for the natural versus induced breeding seasons. The results demonstrate that there are significant variations in the length of the appetitive sexual behavior (ASB) and consummatory sexual behavior (CSB) under these two reproductive conditions. These differences are analyzed for the ASB, which is adaptable, compared with the stereotyped CSB. For the ASB, male isolation is the most rep

Gap in the conditioned stimulus: Differential impacts on temporal expectancy in appetitive and aversive conditions in rats.

We analyzed, through a Pavlovian conditioning procedure in rats, the temporal pattern of behavior in appetitive and aversive conditions within subjects, and the difference in inferred temporal working memory functioning with the Gap paradigm. For both conditions, we paired a 60-s conditioned stimulus (CS: tone1 or tone2) with an unconditioned stimulus (US: shock or chocolate pellet) delivered 20s after CS onset. The analyses of mean response rate and individual-trial data were performed during Probe trials, consisting of CS alone, and trials in which gaps of different position or duration were

Hypothalamic and hindbrain NPY, AGRP and NE increase consummatory feeding responses.

Feeding behavior is comprised of both appetitive and consummatory responses to food. Appetitive responses include the motivated acquisition of food. Consummatory responses, including swallowing, are those that move the food from the mouth to the stomach. Intraoral delivery of liquid food bypasses the requirement for appetitive responses and has been used to examine consummatory responses directly in intact rats. In the present study, we administered neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related protein (AGRP) and norepinephrine (NE), into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) or into th

Towards mouse models of perseveration: a heritable component in extinction of operant behavior in fourteen standard and recombinant inbred mouse lines.

Extinction of instrumental responses is an essential skill for adaptive behavior such as foraging. So far, only few studies have focused on extinction following appetitive conditioning in mice. We studied extinction of appetitive operant lever-press behavior in six standard inbred mouse strains (A/J, C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6J, DBA/2J, BALB/cByJ and NOD/Ltj) and eight recombinant inbred mouse lines. From the response rates at the end of operant and extinction training we computed an extinction index, with higher values indicating better capability to omit behavioral responding in absence of reward. Adenosine A2A receptor activation in the nucleus accumbens decreases motivation for wheel running in male mice.

RATIONALE: Wheel running is a highly motivated behavior in rodents and is often used as a natural reinforcer. The adenosine A2A receptor is abundantly expressed in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and plays a key role in the regulation of motivation and reward-related behaviors. However, its involvement in motivation for wheel running remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate how systemic and intra-NAc pharmacological manipulation of A2A receptors affects motivation for wheel running in mice. METHODS: We examined the effects of systemic administration of the A2A receptor antago

Frank A. Beach award. Homologies of animal and human sexual behaviors.

Theoretical models of animal and human sexual behavior have evolved from two very different literatures, yet they contain many common behavioral components that may reflect the action of similar neuroendocrine and neurochemical systems. The study of animal sexual behavior has been largely concerned with mechanisms that underlie the pattern of consummatory behaviors observed during copulation, behaviors that tend to be highly stereotyped, sexually differentiated, and species-specific. There are important species differences in the behavioral topography, endocrine control, and neural substrates
