Effects of Carbon Quantum Dots on Aquatic Environments: Comparison of Toxicity to Organisms at Different Trophic Levels.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have high hydrophilicity, high cell permeability, and are frequently used in water-based and biorelated applications, yet studies concerning the ecological risks of CQDs in aquatic environments are largely insufficient. In the present study, the toxicity of CQDs to zebrafish ( Danio rerio), zooplankton ( Daphnia magna), and phytoplankton ( Scenedesmus obliquus) were assessed for the first time. The results indicated that CQDs (up to 200 mg/L) could be depurated by D. rerio with negligible toxicity. In comparison, CQDs induced mortality and immobility in D. magna with

[Distribution Characteristics and Potential Risk of CBs in Aquatic Organisms from Typical Epidemic Areas of Schistosomiasis Prevalence].

Eleven mollusca samples and 32 fish samples were collected from typical epidemic areas of schistosomiasis prevalence. The contents of 12 CB congeners in aquatic organism samples were measured using the GC/MS technique. The results indicated that 1,3-DIC, 1,4-DIC, 1,2-DIC and HCB were the most predominant CB congeners in the samples from the studying area. The geometric average of CBs in muscle of mollusca was 11 947 ng x g(-1) lipid weight. The summarized concentration of CBs in fish muscle ranged from 1 851 to 8 159 ng x g(-1) lipid weight. The highest concentration of CBs sum was detected in

ASE extraction method for simultaneous carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis in soft tissues of aquatic organisms.

Since lipids are depleted in 13C relative to proteins and carbohydrates, variations in lipid composition among species and within individuals significantly influence delta13C and may result in misleading ecological interpretations. Whereas lipid extraction before IRMS analysis constitutes a way of stable isotope result lipid-normalisation, such a procedure was given up because of the un-controlled effects of the methods used (i.e., "Bligh & Dyer", Soxhlet, etc.) on delta15N. The aim of this work was to develop a simple, rapid and efficient lipid extraction method allowing for simultaneous C an

Microplastic co-exposure increases PFAS bioaccumulation without universally amplifying toxicity in aquatic organisms: A multi-endpoint meta-analysis.

Aquatic ecosystems are important sinks for microplastics (MPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), while their combined toxic effects on aquatic organisms vary across biological endpoints. This quantitative meta-analysis was performed based on 810 datasets from 29 laboratory studies, to explore MPs-mediated changes in PFASs toxicity and identify key influencing factors. MPs-PFASs co-exposure significantly increased PFASs bioaccumulation, indicating enhanced particle-mediated transport, co-ingestion, or altered internal retention. However, this increase of bioaccumulation did not t

Evidence for Specific Receptor-Mediated Toxicity of Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Organisms Derived from Acute and Chronic Standard Endpoints.

The toxicity of 17 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) was investigated using standardized acute and chronic tests with Daphnia magna and 2 algae species. Chronic toxicity was generally greater for Daphnia than for algae. Compilation of additional data resulted in 100 APIs for which the acute-to-chronic ratio (ACR) was determined for Daphnia. The frequency of high ACRs (~20% with ACRs > 100) indicates that specific receptor-mediated toxicity toward D. magna is rather common among APIs. The 11 APIs with ACRs > 1000 included lipid-modifying agents, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, antineopl

Fabrication of nano-mosquitocides using chitosan from crab shells: Impact on non-target organisms in the aquatic environment.

Mosquitoes are arthropods of huge medical and veterinary relevance, since they vector pathogens and parasites of public health importance, including malaria, dengue and Zika virus. Currently, nanotechnology is considered a potential eco-friendly approach in mosquito control research. We proposed a novel method of biofabrication of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) using chitosan (Ch) from crab shells. Ch-AgNP nanocomposite was characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, SEM, EDX and XRD. Ch-AgNP were tested against larvae and pupae of the malaria vector Anopheles stephensi obtaining LC50 ranging fro

Facile biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using Barleria cristata: mosquitocidal potential and biotoxicity on three non-target aquatic organisms.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) act as vectors of important pathogens and parasites, such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis and lymphatic filariasis. The use of synthetic mosquitocides often leads to high operational costs and adverse non-target effects. Recently, plant-borne compounds have been proposed for rapid extracellular biosynthesis of mosquitocidal nanoparticles. However, the impact of these nanomosquitocides against biological control agents of mosquito larval populations has been poorly studied. In this research, we biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NP) us

Toxicity of organotin compounds and the ecological risk of organic tin with co-existing contaminants in aquatic organisms.

Although organotin (OT) use is restricted worldwide, with the development of industry and agriculture, a large amount of OT is still discharged into aquatic environments. These OTs may interact with other pollutants that cause adverse biological effects (through bioaccumulation and/or toxicity), resulting in combined toxicity. Most research on OTs have focused on the exposure of a single analyte. Information on the toxicity of OTs and coexisting pollutants is quite limited, but is developing rapidly. This is the first review paper evaluating the current state of knowledge on the combined effec

Ecotoxicological evaluation of sodium fluoroacetate on aquatic organisms and investigation of the effects on two fish cell lines.

Sodium monofluoroacetate (compound 1080) is one of the most potent pesticides. It is also a metabolite of many other fluorinated compounds, including anticancer agents, narcotic analgesics, pesticides or industrial chemicals. Other sources of water contamination are the atmospheric degradation of hydrofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons. However, there is little information available about the adverse effects of sodium fluoroacetate in aquatic organisms. Firstly, the bacterium Vibrio fischeri (decomposer), the alga Chlorella vulgaris (1st producer) and the cladoceran Daphnia magna (1st

Pervasive aquatic vegetation organic carbon losses in China's lakes.

One of the major global concerns is to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions to addressing the detrimental impacts of climate change. Aquatic vegetation, as a natural carbon pool, offers a potential solution to such problems. However, a crucial impediment is the absence of comprehensive estimates of its organic carbon storage. Here we used meta-analysis method to estimate aquatic vegetation organic carbon storage and analyze its dynamics in China's lakes based on literature-reviewed data, in situ measured data and aquatic vegetation area database. We built a database of aquatic vegetation survey d

Acute toxicities to typical aquatic organisms of synthetic phenolic antioxidants and QSAR study: The vital role of water solubility.

In this paper, the acute toxicities to Scenedesmus obliquus and Danio rerio of 22 Synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) were investigated in detail. The half-effective concentrations (EC50) of 22 SPAs and half-lethal concentrations (LC50) of 14 SPAs were calculated by the corresponding toxicity effect curves. Results showed that except for 2,4-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (BHT-Q), an important intermediate of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-tOP) and dodecyl gallate (DG) with the relative EC50 values of 2.35 and 2.53 mg/L were the most toxic among 22 SPAs. 4-tOP

Responses of aquatic organisms downstream from WWTPs to disinfectants and their by-products during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wuhan.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to the large-scale usage of chlorinated disinfectants in cities. Disinfectants and disinfection by-products (DBPs) enter rivers through urban drainage and surface runoff. We investigated the variations in residual chlorine, DBPs, and different aquatic organisms in the Hanjiang, Fuhe, and Qinglinghe Rivers in Wuhan during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sampling sites were from the wastewater treatment plant outlets to the downstream drinking water treatment plant intakes. Total residual chlorine and DBPs (dichloromethane and trichloromethane) detected in the river w

A review of the effects of bromate on aquatic organisms and toxicity of bromate to oyster (Crassostrea gigas) embryos.

A critical literature review has been undertaken of the effects that bromate (BrO3-) has on aquatic organisms. Chronic (multigeneration) studies using four marine phytoplankton species indicate a stimulation of cell division at concentrations up to 13.6 mg BrO3- liter-1, such that the EC50 is > 13.6 mg BrO3- liter-1 (exposure period unspecified). No published data were available for any freshwater algal or phytoplankton species. For freshwater invertebrates, the available data are limited to acute studies using two species: the water flea, Daphnia magna, with a 48-h LC50 of 179 mg BrO3- liter-

Tire and road wear particles in the aquatic organisms - A review of source, properties, exposure routes, and biological effects.

With the continuous development of the modern social economy, rubber has been widely used in our daily life. Tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) are generated by friction between tires and the road surface during the processes of driving, acceleration, and braking. TRWPs can be divided into three main components according to their source: tire tread, brake wear, and road wear. Due to urban runoff, TRWPs flow with rainwater into the aquatic environment and influence the surrounding aquatic organisms. As an emerging contaminant, TRWPs with the characteristics of small particles and strong toxic

A Review on the Involvement of Heat Shock Proteins (Extrinsic Chaperones) in Response to Stress Conditions in Aquatic Organisms.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) encompass both extrinsic chaperones and stress proteins. These proteins, with molecular weights ranging from 14 to 120 kDa, are conserved across all living organisms and are expressed in response to stress. The upregulation of specific genes triggers the synthesis of HSPs, facilitated by the interaction between heat shock factors and gene promoter regions. Notably, HSPs function as chaperones or helper molecules in various cellular processes involving lipids and proteins, and their upregulation is not limited to heat-induced stress but also occurs in response to anox

Water quality criteria for lanthanum for freshwater aquatic organisms derived via species sensitivity distributions and interspecies correlation estimation models.

The increasing exploitation and application of rare earth elements (REEs) may induce hazardous risks to freshwater aquatic organisms. Due to the lack of water quality criteria (WQC) and sufficient reliable toxicity data, little information is available on the ecological risk of REEs in surface water. In this study, lanthanum (La) toxicity data were collected from published toxicological studies, and the data quality was assessed using a toxicological data reliability assessment tool. To obtain more toxicity data, Daphnia magna, Cyprinus carpio, and Dania rerio embryos were selected as surrogat

Interactions of Environmental Chemicals and Natural Products With ABC and SLC Transporters in the Digestive System of Aquatic Organisms.

An organism's diet is a major route of exposure to both beneficial nutrients and toxic environmental chemicals and natural products. The uptake of dietary xenobiotics in the intestine is prevented by transporters of the Solute Carrier (SLC) and ATP Binding Cassette (ABC) family. Several environmental chemicals and natural toxins have been identified to induce expression of these defense transporters in fish and aquatic invertebrates, indicating that they are substrates and can be eliminated. However, certain environmental chemicals, termed Transporter-Interfering Chemicals or TICs, have recent
