Foliar nanoparticles alleviated cadmium-induced phytotoxicity in dandelion via regulation of ionomics, metabolomics, and rhizobacterial networks.

Foliar application of beneficial nanoparticles (NPs) demonstrates potential in alleviating heavy metal (HM) stress in plants. Yet, their effects on rhizosphere microbial communities, nutrient dynamics, and metabolic adaptations in dandelion remain underexplored. This study investigated the mechanisms underlying Cadmium (Cd) stress mitigation in dandelion via foliar application of ZnONPs, TiO2NPs, SiO2NPs, and Fe3O4NPs by integrating high-throughput sequencing, metabolomic profiling, and physiological analyses. Moderate concentrations of ZnONPs (ZM) and low concentrations of SiO2NPs (SL) elevat

Contrasting environmental impacts of nano-biochar and conventional biochar on various organisms.

The environmental hazards of nanobiochar (n-BC) require attention due to limited knowledge. This study is the first to explore the effects of biochar size reduction across various organisms, including bacteria (Allivibrio fischeri), plants (Lemna minor, Lepidium sativum), and invertebrates (Daphnia magna, Folsomia candida). Bulk biochar (b-BC) and n-BC were applied in both liquid and solid-phase tests to assess their ecotoxicity. The resulting leachates were tested at concentrations of 2, 10, and 100 mg/L on organisms such as Daphnia magna and Lemna minor. In the solid-phase tests, b-BC and n-

Can salicylic acid modulate biochemical, physiological and population alterations in a macrophyte species under chemical stress by diclofenac?

Salicylic acid (SA) is a pharmaceutical drug that may exert toxic effects by its own; however, simultaneous exposure of plants to SA and to other substances, often results in the significant changes in the patterns of toxic response/resistance to these other sources of chemical stress. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the capacity of SA of modulating Lemna minor responses co-exposed to the pharmaceutical drug, diclofenac - DCF. To attain this objective, L. minor was exposed for 7 days, to DCF alone, and to combinations of DCF with SA. After exposure, biochemical, physiological and

Identification of Odor-Active Compounds Released from a Damaged Plant of the Asian Skunk Cabbage Symplocarpus renifolius.

Symplocarpus renifolius (Asian skunk cabbage) is a perennial herb of the Araceae family. As its common name implies, this plant produces a strong garliclike irritant odor with a rotten note when the plant parts are crushed. To elucidate the odor characteristics, the volatile compounds released from crushed plant parts (rhizome, petioles, and leaf blades) of S. renifolius were identified by a dynamic headspace method. Fifteen sulfur compounds were identified as odor-active compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O). The sulfur compounds may be responsible for the s

Ability of eugenol to reduce tongue edema induced by Dieffenbachia picta Schott in mice.

Dieffenbachia picta Schott (Araceae), known in Brazil as "comigo-ninguém-pode" is an ornamental plant with toxic properties. Its juice, when chewed, causes a painful edema of the oral mucous membranes, buccal ulcerations and tongue hypertrophy. This acute inflammation sometimes becomes severe enough to produce glottis obstruction, respiratory compromise and death. Eugenol (4-alil-2-metoxiphenol), the essential oil extracted from Caryophyllus aromaticus (Myrtaceae) is widely used in odontology. In this study, our objective was to standardize, in mice, a measurable methodology for the tongue ede

Enrichment and Characterization Protocol for Plant-Derived Nanovesicles from the Aquatic Plant Wolffia globosa.

This article presents a rigorous and reproducible protocol for the enrichment of plant-derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) from the aquatic plant Wolffia globosa using differential ultracentrifugation combined with sucrose density gradient enrichment. The protocol is specifically optimized to address the technical challenges associated with PDNV enrichment from extremely small aquatic plants that require whole-plant homogenization, a process that inherently increases contamination from intracellular organelles, soluble proteins, and chlorophyll. The workflow integrates gentle homogenization, sequenti

Investigating the phytotoxic effects of binary mixtures of diclofenac and paracetamol on duckweed - synergistic or antagonistic interaction?

Mixtures of emerging aquatic contaminants, like diclofenac (DCF) and paracetamol (PCT) commonly occurring in the environment, can exhibit combination effects. Accumulation of drugs in duckweed plants exposed for seven days to DCF + PCT mixtures was similar to that under individual drugs (both 0.2, 2, and 20 mg/L). But the nature of drug interaction in mixtures was ambiguous, even though the toxic impact of DCF was more substantial than that of PCT. Mixtures with a DCF-to-PCT ratio of 1:1 exhibited a synergistic interaction manifested by a decrease (up to 90 %) in plant number, especially in mi

Transport and removal mechanism of benzene by Tradescantia zebrina Bosse and Epipremnum aureum (Linden ex André) G.S. Bunting in air-plant-solution system.

Phytoremediation is considered an effective method for indoor air pollution control. The removal rate and mechanism of benzene in air by two plants, Tradescantia zebrina Bosse and Epipremnum aureum (Linden ex André) G. S. Bunting, were investigated through fumigation experiments under the condition of plant hydroponics culturing. Results showed that the plant removal rates increased with increase in benzene concentration in air. When the benzene concentration in air was set at 432.25-1314.75 mg·m-3, the removal rates of T. zebrina and E. aureum ranged from 23.05 ± 3.07 to 57.42 ± 8.28 mg·kg-1·

Rapid assessment of pesticide toxicity in aquatic ecosystems using deep learning-based automatic duckweed counting method.

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to control weeds, insects, and diseases that threaten crop yields. However, their extensive use raises concerns about environmental impacts, particularly in aquatic ecosystems, which are vulnerable to contamination through runoff and leaching. To assess the toxicity of pesticides to aquatic plants, we applied an optimized automated duckweed (Wolffia globosa) frond-counting tool based on the StarDist technique. Using this method, we tested twenty-eight commonly used pesticides, including herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides effects on duckweed growt

Insight into the Corrosion Inhibition Performance of Pistia stratiotes Leaf Extract as a Novel Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel in 1 M HCl Solution.

In this research, the Pistia stratiotes leaf (PSL) extract was evaluated as a green corrosion inhibitor for the corrosion of mild steel in 1 M HCl using electrochemical measurements and surface characterization. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) spectra showed that the inhibitory activity of the phytochemical compounds enhanced with increasing concentration up to 400 ppm, which was reflected in the increase in the charge transfer resistance and double-layer capacitance. Regarding the effect of immersion time, EIS results indicated that the persistence of the PSL extract was between

In situ phytoextraction of Mn and NH4+-N from aqueous electrolytic manganese residue solution by Pistia stratiotes: Effects of Fe/Co presence and rhizospheric microbe synergistic involvement.

The electrolytic manganese industry produces a large amount of electrolytic manganese residue (EMR). Soluble Mn, NH4+-N, and other pollutants may be released from the open-air stacked EMR and transported to the environment along with rainfall or surface runoff. Aqueous EMR solution (AES) generally contains various elements required for plant growth, and phytoremediation can be applied to remove these pollutants from AES. Since the contents of Fe and Co vary greatly in AES depending on the ore sources as well as the pre-treatment processes, the presence of bioavailable Fe and Co at different le

Toxicological effects resulting from co-exposure to nanomaterials and to a β-blocker pharmaceutical drug in the non-target macrophyte species Lemna minor.

The wide use of carbon-based materials for various purposes leads to their discharge in the aquatic systems, and simultaneous occurrence with other environmental contaminants, such as pharmaceutical drugs. This co-occurrence can adversely affect exposed aquatic organisms. Up to now, few studies have considered the simultaneous toxicity of nanomaterials, and organic contaminants, including pharmaceutical drugs, towards aquatic plants. Thus, this study aimed to assess the toxic effects of the co-exposure of propranolol (PRO), and nanomaterials based on cellulose nanocrystal, and graphene oxide i
