Evaluation of agar dilution as an alternative method for antimicrobial susceptibility testing and tentative ECOFF determination for Arcobacter butzleri.

Arcobacter butzleri is an emerging pathogen associated with human gastrointestinal illness. Despite its growing significance, information on the resistance of this microorganism is limited due to the lack of practical antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods and well-defined interpretive criteria. This study evaluates agar dilution as a reliable alternative to the broth microdilution method, the current reference protocol approved by the CLSI Veterinary AST (VAST) subcommittee. A total of 415 A. butzleri isolates were tested against ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, and tetrac

Towards a typing strategy for Arcobacter species isolated from humans and animals and assessment of the in vitro genomic stability.

Arcobacter species have a widespread distribution with a broad range of animal hosts and environmental reservoirs, and are increasingly associated with human illness. To elucidate the routes of infection, several characterization methods such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), amplified fragment-length polymorphism, and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR have already been applied, but without proper validation or comparison. At present, no criterion standard typing method or strategy has been proposed. Therefore, after the validation of PFGE, those commonly app

Identification of Arcobacter cryaerophilus isolated from a traffic accident victim with bacteremia by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing.

Traditional ways of identifying slow growing bacteria is slow and often difficult. In this study, a small, Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, slow growing bacillus was isolated from the blood culture of a 7-year old traffic accident victim. The bacterium was non-hemolytic, catalase and oxidase positive. An attempt to use the Vitek system (GNI+) and the API system (20NE) to identify the strain was unsuccessful as the growth controls showed negative results. 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing showed that there was 1 base difference between the isolate and Arcobacter cryaerophilus (GenBank Acce

Occurrence and diversity of Arcobacter spp. along the Llobregat River catchment, at sewage effluents and in a drinking water treatment plant.

The presence of Arcobacter species in faecally contaminated environmental waters has previously been studied. However, the ability to eliminate Arcobacter during the water treatment processes that produce drinking water has been little studied. We have investigated the prevalence and diversity of Arcobacter spp. throughout the year at 12 sampling points in the Llobregat River catchment (Catalonia, Spain) including 3 sites at a drinking water treatment plant. Positive samples for Arcobacter spp., came predominantly from the most faecally polluted sites. Recovery rates from all sites were greate

Arcobacter: an emerging food-borne zoonotic pathogen, its public health concerns and advances in diagnosis and control - a comprehensive review.

Arcobacter has emerged as an important food-borne zoonotic pathogen, causing sometimes serious infections in humans and animals. Newer species of Arcobacter are being incessantly emerging (presently 25 species have been identified) with novel information on the evolutionary mechanisms and genetic diversity among different Arcobacter species. These have been reported from chickens, domestic animals (cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, dogs), reptiles (lizards, snakes and chelonians), meat (poultry, pork, goat, lamb, beef, rabbit), vegetables and from humans in different countries. Arcobacters are impl

Higher water temperature and incubation under aerobic and microaerobic conditions increase the recovery and diversity of Arcobacter spp. from shellfish.

Some Arcobacter species are considered emerging food-borne and waterborne pathogens, and shellfish have been suggested as one of their reservoirs. However, only a few studies have investigated the presence of Arcobacter in this kind of food. This study assesses the prevalence and diversity of Arcobacter spp. in shellfish by multiplex PCR (m-PCR) and culturing methods (under different atmospheric conditions) and evaluates the possible influence of environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, and harvesting bay). Arcobacter was detected by m-PCR and/or culturing in 61 (29.9%) of 204 shellfis

Assessment of the genetic diversity among arcobacters isolated from poultry products by using two PCR-based typing methods.

In this study, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR (ERIC-PCR) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA PCR (RAPD-PCR) were optimized for characterization of Arcobacter butzleri, Arcobacter cryaerophilus, and Arcobacter skirrowii. In addition, a simple and rapid DNA extraction method was tested for use in both typing procedures. Both methods had satisfactory typeability and discriminatory power, but the fingerprints generated with ERIC-PCR were more reproducible and complex than those obtained with RAPD-PCR. The use of nondiluted boiled cell suspensions as DNA templates was found

Prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence gene profiles of Arcobacter species isolated from human stool samples, foods of animal origin, ready-to-eat salad mixes and environmental water.

BACKGROUND: Members of the genus Arcobacter are considered as emerging zoonotic food and waterborne pathogens that cause gastroenteritis and bacteremia in humans. However, the potential risk that Arcobacter species pose to public health remains unassessed in various countries, including Baltic states. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility and presence of putative virulence genes of Arcobacter isolates recovered from humans, food products and environmental water in Lithuania. RESULTS: A total of 1862 samples were collected and examined f

Arcobacteraceae: An Exploration of Antibiotic Resistance Featuring the Latest Research Updates.

The Arcobacteraceae bacterial family includes species isolated from animals and related food products. Moreover, these species have been found in other ecological niches, including water. Some species, particularly Arcobacter butzleri and Arcobacter cryaerophilus, have been isolated from human clinical cases and linked to gastrointestinal symptoms. The presence of antibiotic-resistant strains is a concern for public health, considering the possible zoonoses and foodborne infections caused by contaminated food containing bacteria resistant to antibiotic treatments.
