Relationships between fox populations and rabies virus spread in northern Canada.

Rabies spreads in both Arctic (Vulpes lagopus) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) throughout the Canadian Arctic but limited wildlife disease surveillance, due to the extensive landmass of the Canadian north and its small widely scattered human population, undermines our knowledge of disease transmission patterns. This study has explored genetic population structure in both the rabies virus and its fox hosts to better understand factors that impact rabies spread. Phylogenetic analysis of 278 samples of the Arctic lineage of rabies virus recovered over 40 years identified four sub-lineages, A1 to A4

The role of a mechanistic host in maintaining arctic rabies variant distributions: Assessment of functional genetic diversity in Alaskan red fox (Vulpes vulpes).

Populations are exposed to different types and strains of pathogens across heterogeneous landscapes, where local interactions between host and pathogen may present reciprocal selective forces leading to correlated patterns of spatial genetic structure. Understanding these coevolutionary patterns provides insight into mechanisms of disease spread and maintenance. Arctic rabies (AR) is a lethal disease with viral variants that occupy distinct geographic distributions across North America and Europe. Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) are a highly susceptible AR host, whose range overlaps both geographicall

Sexual health and sexually transmitted infections in the North American Arctic.

Our objective was to describe the basic epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections for Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of North America. We summarized published and unpublished rates of chlamydial infection and gonorrhea reported from 2003 through 2006 for Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. In 2006, Alaska reported high rates of chlamydial infection (715 cases/100,000 population) compared with the United States as a whole; northern Canada reported high rates of chlamydial infection (1,693 cases/100,000) and gonorrhea (247 cases/100,000) compared with southern Canada; and Greenland consistently

One health in the Arctic - connections and actions.

There is growing awareness and recognition of the importance of the One Health paradigm to address existing environmental threats and recognise emerging ones at an early stage among Arctic residents, public health agencies, and wildlife resource managers. The One Health approach, emphasising the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health, plays a pivotal role in addressing these multifaceted issues. Warming climate and permafrost thaw may influence both contaminant exposure and the spread of zoonotic infectious diseases and have impacts on water and food security. Migration from

Biology and Cultural Importance of the Narwhal.

Though narwhal have survived multiple ice ages, including 2.5 Ma and the last interglacial period with warming temperatures, Arctic climate change during the Anthropocene introduces new challenges. Despite their evolutionary connection to Arctic Pleistocene fossils, narwhal archeocete ancestors from the Pliocene (Bohaskaia monodontoides) and Miocene (Denebola and Odobenocetopsidae) inhabited warm waters. Narwhal Arctic adaptation holds valuable insights into unique traits, including thin skin; extreme diving capacity; and a unique straight, spiraled, and sensory tooth organ system. Inaccessibl

The first report of meningitis in a Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus).

The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is a large species of shark found in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and is believed to be the longest living vertebrate. Relatively little is known about its biology, abundance, health or diseases. In March 2022, only the third reported UK stranding of this species occurred and it was the first to undergo post-mortem examination. The animal was a sexually immature female, measuring 3.96 m in length and 285 kg in weight, and was in poor nutritional state. Gross findings included haemorrhages in the skin and soft tissues, particularly of the he

Evidence of stereotyped contact call use in narwhal (Monodon monoceros) mother-calf communication.

Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) are gregarious toothed whales that strictly reside in the high Arctic. They produce a broad range of signal types; however, studies of narwhal vocalizations have been mostly descriptive of the sounds available in the species' overall repertoire. Little is known regarding the functions of highly stereotyped mixed calls (i.e., biphonations with both sound elements produced simultaneously), although preliminary evidence has suggested that such vocalizations are individually distinctive and function as contact calls. Here we provide evidence that supports this notion i

Metabolic flexibility of aerobic methanotrophs under anoxic conditions in Arctic lake sediments.

Methane (CH4) emissions from Arctic lakes are a large and growing source of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere with critical implications for global climate. Because Arctic lakes are ice covered for much of the year, understanding the metabolic flexibility of methanotrophs under anoxic conditions would aid in characterizing the mechanisms responsible for limiting CH4 emissions from high-latitude regions. Using sediments from an active CH4 seep in Lake Qalluuraq, Alaska, we conducted DNA-based stable isotope probing (SIP) in anoxic mesocosms and found that aerobic Gammaproteobacterial methanotrop

Summer and winter MgCO3 levels in the skeletons of Arctic bryozoans.

In the Arctic, seasonal patterns in seawater biochemical conditions are shaped by physical, chemical, and biological processes related to the alternation of seasons, i.e. winter polar night and summer midnight sun. In summertime, CO2 concentration is driven by photosynthetic activity of autotrophs which raises seawater pH and carbonate saturation state (Ω). In addition, restriction of photosynthetic activity to the euphotic zone and establishment of seasonal stratification often leads to depth gradients in pH and Ω. In winter, however, severely reduced primary production along with respiration

Deciphering the Cold Adaptive Mechanisms in Pseudomonas psychrophila MTCC12324 Isolated from the Arctic at 79° N.

Psychrophiles, host of cold environments, have been successfully undergoing the process of evolution by which they have acquired innate adaptations to withstand the unfavorable effects of low temperature. Psychrophiles renders immense opportunity to explore the underlying mechanisms of cold adaptation. The present study focused to explore the cold adaptive mechanisms of Pseudomonas psychrophila MTCC12324, a facultative psychrophilic bacterium isolated from the Ny-Alesund, an island in the Svalbard Archipelago (79°55' N, 11°56' E) in the Arctic. Whole genome sequencing of P. psychrophila MTCC12

Springtime Nitrogen Oxide-Influenced Chlorine Chemistry in the Coastal Arctic.

Atomic chlorine (Cl) is a strong atmospheric oxidant that shortens the lifetimes of pollutants and methane in the springtime Arctic, where the molecular halogens Cl2 and BrCl are known Cl precursors. Here, we quantify the contributions of reactive chlorine trace gases and present the first observations, to our knowledge, of ClNO2 (another Cl precursor), N2O5, and HO2NO2 in the Arctic. During March - May 2016 near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, up to 21 ppt of ClNO2, 154 ppt of Cl2, 27 ppt of ClO, 71 ppt of N2O5, 21 ppt of BrCl, and 153 ppt of HO2NO2 were measured using chemical ionization mass spectrometr

Euglyphid testate amoebae (rhizaria: euglyphida) from an arctic eocene waterbody: evidence of evolutionary stasis in plate morphology for over 40 million years.

Well-preserved siliceous plates representing multiple species of euglyphids are described from a Middle Eocene maar lake deposit located near the Arctic Circle in northern Canada. Siliceous plate morphotypes including scutiform, rectangular, hexagonal, oval and circular body forms, six apertural plate types containing from five to thirteen teeth and spine plates, are documented. Many plate types bear resemblance to those found on modern species as well as ones documented from Miocene sites. These findings extend the known geological record for euglyphids and support the concept of evolutionary

Arctic introgression and chromatin regulation facilitated rapid Qinghai-Tibet Plateau colonization by an avian predator.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), possesses a climate as cold as that of the Arctic, and also presents uniquely low oxygen concentrations and intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation. QTP animals have adapted to these extreme conditions, but whether they obtained genetic variations from the Arctic during cold adaptation, and how genomic mutations in non-coding regions regulate gene expression under hypoxia and intense UV environment, remain largely unknown. Here, we assemble a high-quality saker falcon genome and resequence populations across Eurasia. We identify female-biased hybridization with Arct

Ecology of Arctic rabies: 60 years of disease surveillance in the warming climate of northern Canada.

Rabies occurs throughout the Arctic, representing an ongoing public health concern for residents of northern communities. The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) is the main reservoir of the Arctic rabies virus variant, yet little is known about the epidemiology of Arctic rabies, such as the ecological mechanisms driving where and when epizootics in fox populations occur. In this study, we provide the first portrait of the spatio-temporal spread of rabies across northern Canada. We also explore the impact of seasonal and multiannual dynamics in Arctic fox populations and climatic factors on rabies tra

Toxoplasma gondii: a parasite pollutant in the Arctic.

It is enigmatic, but important, to understand how Toxoplasma gondii, with felids as the ultimate source, enters and circulates among wildlife, people, and the environment of the Arctic, where felids are rare. Informed by studies in the last 15 years, we opine that: (i) marked regional differences in human seroprevalence across the North American Arctic are supported by more numerous animal sentinel studies; (ii) tissue cysts in migratory geese and oocysts shed by felids travel north as 'parasite pollutants' into Arctic ecosystems, moving from land to sea and back again; and (iii) exposure to T

Breast Ultrasound Microvascular Imaging and Radiogenomics.

BACKGROUND: Arctic-like (AL) lineages of rabies viruses (RABVs) remains endemic in some Arctic and Asia countries. However, their evolutionary dynamics are largely unappreciated. OBJECTIVES: We attempted to estimate the evolutionary history, geographic origin and spread of the Arctic-related RABVs. METHODS: Full length or partial sequences of the N and G genes were used to infer the evolutionary aspects of AL RABVs by Bayesian evolutionary analysis. RESULTS: The most recent common ancestor (tMRCA) of the current Arctic and AL RABVs emerged in the 1830s and evolved independently after divers

Investigating the evolution of the Arctic lineage of canine distemper virus circulating in Italy.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) can cause fatal viral infection in domestic and wild animals globally. Several lineages are known, originating from distinct geographical regions and hosts, and can spread naturally or through human intervention into new geographic areas. The Arctic lineage was first described in carnivores of the Arctic ecosystems and subsequently reported in several European and Asian countries, yet its origin, evolution, and ecology remain partially unresolved. In this study, we generated genome sequence data of (n = 16) CDV strains of Arctic lineage collected from dogs in Italy

High Methylmercury in Arctic and Subarctic Ponds is Related to Nutrient Levels in the Warming Eastern Canadian Arctic.

Permafrost thaw ponds are ubiquitous in the eastern Canadian Arctic, yet little information exists on their potential as sources of methylmercury (MeHg) to freshwaters. They are microbially active and conducive to methylation of inorganic mercury, and are also affected by Arctic warming. This multiyear study investigated thaw ponds in a discontinuous permafrost region in the Subarctic taiga (Kuujjuarapik-Whapmagoostui, QC) and a continuous permafrost region in the Arctic tundra (Bylot Island, NU). MeHg concentrations in thaw ponds were well above levels measured in most freshwater ecosystems i
