Molecular analysis of Anaplasma ovis, Theileria ovis and Brucella abortus in adult Ornithodoros lahorensis soft ticks (Acari: Ixodida: Argasidae) isolated from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China.

INTRODUCTION: Ticks are obligate blood-feeding arthropods that cause significant economic losses in domestic animal husbandry and threaten public health. However, information about soft ticks (Acari: Argasidae) and tick-borne pathogens in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of China is scarce. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, PCR assays and gene sequencing were used to detect and analyse the epidemiological features of Anaplasma ovis, Theileria ovis and Brucella abortus parasitic infections in 366 Ornithodoros lahorensis soft ticks collected from five sampling sites in the XUAR fr

[Taxonomy of the Sokuluk virus (SOKV) (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus, Entebbe bat virus group) isolated from bats (Vespertilio pipistrellus Schreber, 1774), ticks (Argasidae Koch, 1844), and birds in Kyrgyzstan].

Complete genome sequencing of the Sokuluk virus (SOKV) isolated in Kyrgyzstan from bats Vespertilio pipistrellus and their obligatory parasites--Argasidae Koch, 1844, ticks was carried out. SOKV was classified as attributed to the Flaviviridae family, Flavivirus genus. The maximum homology (71% for nucleotide and 79% for amino acid sequences) was detected with respect to the Entebbe bat virus (ENTV). ENTV and SOKV form a group joining to the yellow fever virus (YFV) within the limits of the mosquito flavivirus branch. Close relation of SOKV with bat covers and human housings permits to assume

The Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) capensis group (Acarina: Ixodoidea: Argasidae) of the palearctic and oriental regions. O. (A.) coniceps identity, bird and mammal hosts, virus infections, and distribution in Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) coniceps (Canestrini 1890), which was briefly described from adult specimens from St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice, Italy, has been a confusing taxon. We redescribe and illustrate the adult and immature stages from St. Mark's Cathedral (topotypes) and elsewhere, list criteria to distinguish this species from others in the O. (A.) capensis complex, and provide data for 36 collections, chiefly from nest sites of wild and domestic pigeons in humid, rocky situations, and from a nest of the pallid swift, in Italy, France, Egypt, Kenya, Israel, Jordan, Afghanistan, Ukrainia,

The Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) capensis group (Acarina: Ixodoidea: Argasidae) of the palearctic and oriental regions. O. (A.) maritimus: identity, marine bird hosts, virus infections, and distribution in western Europe and northwestern Africa.

In 1967, Vermeil and Marguet described Ornithodoros coniceps maritimus from larvae reared from larvae taken from marine birds on Dumet Island (Atlantic Ocean), Basse Bretagne, France. We collected O. (A.) coniceps Canestrini, 1890, from the type locality (Venice, Italy) and determined that the taxons coniceps and maritimus each require full species status. We selected a lectotype and paralectotypes for the taxon maritimus from the original Dumet Island material. The larva of maritimus is redescribed and the nymph, male, and female are described for the first time. Collection data are recorded

The habitat suitability model for the potential distribution of Ornithodoros tholozani (Laboulbène et Mégnin, 1882) and Ornithodoros lahorensis (Neumann, 1908) (Acari: Argasidae): the main vectors of tick-borne relapsing fever in Iran.

Endemic relapsing fever (RF) is one of the most important arthropod-borne diseases caused by various types of Borrelia and transmitted by soft tick species. The investigation of the distribution of vectors in a region can help control and prevent the disease. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of Ornithodoros tholozani and Ornithodoros lahorensis in Iran and to identify the most influential climatic variables affecting their distribution. The ecological niche model was used in Maxent to predict the environmental suitability of the studied species. A review was conducted on the ea

Ornithodoros moubata, a soft tick vector for Rickettsia in east Africa?

Omithodoros moubata complex (Argasidae) ticks collected from human dwellings in central Tanzania were found to carry a novel rickettsial species that clustered among the spotted fever group. Although no evidence of human infection was evident, these ticks feed primarily on man, thus providing opportunity for zoonotic infection.

Reservoir and vector evolutionary pressures shaped the adaptation of Borrelia.

The life cycle of spirochetes of the genus Borrelia includes complex networks of vertebrates and ticks. The tripartite association of Borrelia-vertebrate-tick has proved ecologically successful for these bacteria, which have become some of the most prominent tick-borne pathogens in the northern hemisphere. To keep evolutionary pace with its double-host life history, Borrelia must adapt to the evolutionary pressures exerted by both sets of hosts. In this review, we attempt to reconcile functional, phylogenetic, and ecological perspectives to propose a coherent scenario of Borrelia evolution. Av

Experimental transmission of West Nile virus (Flaviviridae: Flavivirus) by Carios capensis ticks from North America.

Seabird soft ticks, Carios capensis (Ixodida: Argasidae), originally collected from coastal Georgia, USA, were allowed to ingest a blood meal from pekin ducklings (Anas domesticus) infected with WNV. After 35 days of extrinsic incubation, the ticks transmitted virus to naive ducklings. WNV was detected via plaque assay and RTPCR in ticks and in tissues and serum of ducklings 7 days post infestation.

Detection of relapsing fever spirochetes (Borrelia hermsii and Borrelia coriaceae) in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Nevada, United States.

Surveillance of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus, Rafinesque, 1917) populations for tick-borne diseases has helped define the distribution of these pathogens and their subsequent risk of transmission to humans and domestic animals. We surveyed three mule deer herds across the state of Nevada for infection with relapsing fever Borrelia spp. spirochetes. Bacterial prevalence varied by the county where deer were sampled but Borrelia spirochetes were detected in 7.7% of all deer sampled. Infected deer were identified in every location from which mule deer samples were obtained. Sequencing of the Bor

Coxiella burnetii and Related Tick Endosymbionts Evolved from Pathogenic Ancestors.

Both symbiotic and pathogenic bacteria in the family Coxiellaceae cause morbidity and mortality in humans and animals. For instance, Coxiella-like endosymbionts (CLEs) improve the reproductive success of ticks-a major disease vector, while Coxiella burnetii causes human Q fever, and uncharacterized coxiellae infect both animals and humans. To better understand the evolution of pathogenesis and symbiosis in this group of intracellular bacteria, we sequenced the genome of a CLE present in the soft tick Ornithodoros amblus (CLEOA) and compared it to the genomes of other bacteria in the order Legi

Bat-associated soft tick Carios vespertilionis in Belarus.

The soft tick Carios vespertilionis is a nidicolous ectoparasite of bats with a wide Old World distribution, yet its occurrence in Belarus remains poorly documented. This study provides the first detailed account of C. vespertilionis in Belarus based on field surveys conducted between 2020 and 2023, supplemented by two additional records from a private collection. In total, 1113 bats representing 16 species were considered, including 1111 field-sampled individuals of 15 species. Carios vespertilionis was recorded at 23 localities in 16 districts of five regions of Belarus. Across all records,

Identification of a rickettsial endosymbiont in a soft tick Ornithodoros turicata americanus.

Bacterial endosymbionts are abundantly found in both hard and soft ticks. Occidentia massiliensis, a rickettsial endosymbiont, was first identified in the soft tick Ornithodoros sonrai collected from Senegal and later was identified in a hard tick Africaniella transversale. In this study, we noted the presence of Occidentia species, designated as Occidentia-like species, in a soft tick O. turicata americanus. Sequencing and phylogenetic analyses of the two genetic markers, 16S rRNA and groEL confirmed the presence of Occidentia-like species in O. turicata americanus ticks. The Occidentia-like

[A woman with a biting arthropod].

A 36-year-old woman presented with a red, itching bump on her back and brought the arthropod that had bitten her. The diagnosis, a bite of a soft tick, was made by determination of the arthropod as a pigeon tick (Argas reflexus). Pigeon ticks only occasionally bite humans and can transmit multiple infectious diseases.
