An eight-year old boy from Posadas (27 masculine 23'S, 55 masculine 54'W) was diagnosed with visceral leishmaniasis (VL) during 2006. Lutzomyia longipalpis was discovered in the backyard of his house, while the spread of canine visceral leishmaniasis was confirmed in Posadas. This is the southernmost report of a VL transmission focus and the first in Argentina.

We describe the first molecular confirmation of Rickettsia rickettsii, the cause of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), from a tick vector, Amblyomma cajennense, and from a cluster of fatal spotted fever cases in Argentina. Questing A. cajennense ticks were collected at or near sites of presumed or confirmed cases of spotted fever rickettsiosis in Jujuy Province and evaluated by polymerase chain reaction assays for spotted fever group rickettsiae. DNA of R. rickettsii was amplified from a pool of A. cajennense ticks and from tissues of one of four patients who died during 2003-2004 after illn

Andes virus was identified in 1995 as the etiologic agent of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in Southern Argentina. We describe herein the main clinical characteristics of 25 HPS confirmed cases acquired in this area between 1993 and September 1999. The mean age was 34 years (range 11-70), with 72% males. Clinical characteristics were similar to those previously reported for Sin Nombre virus (SNV) cases. However, in this group of patients we also observed conjuntival injection in 10/25 (42%), facial flushing in 8/25 (33%), pharyngeal congestion in 7/25 (29%) and petechiae in 3/25 (12%). On

Two patients suffering from SUNCT syndrome are presented. Some features are remarkable. The first patient was a 69-year-old man whose first crisis was located in the right supraorbital region. After a 4-month spontaneous remission, the pain returned to the upper part of the cheek, radiating to the supraciliary region on the same side, with lacrimation and conjunctival injection. Rhinorrhea was absent. The painful attacks were triggered by head movements. Clinical improvement occurred with carbamazepine treatment. The second patient was a 48-year-old woman whose painful attacks lasted from 30 t

We report on 30 cases of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL), mainly diagnosed in 1985-1993 in Argentina, whose population is predominantly of European descent. Twenty-four cases were late infantile Jansky-Bielschowsky (LINCL) and 6 were juvenile Spielmeyer-Vogt (JNCL). Sex ratio was female:male, 20:10. Age range and mean at onset and at diagnosis for the LINCL cases were 1-6 years, mean 3.1, and 2-11 years, mean 5.5, and for the JNCL cases, 5-9 years, mean 7, and 9-18 years, mean 13, respectively. Cases were referred for biopsy after neurological examination, and most included complete elect

Seventeen complicated outbreaks of infectious coryza in layer, broiler-breeder, and broiler flocks were studied. In the layer flock outbreaks, drops in egg production of up to 35% were seen. In the broiler flocks and several of the layer flocks, losses due to persistent mortality and/or culling varied between 2 and 5%. Signs of infectious coryza in both layers and broiler-breeders were typical; in broilers, however, swollen head-like syndrome was seen. Except in one flock, no viral diseases were clinically or serologically detected. Excluding broiler-breeders, birds from most other flocks were

This work presents a description of the knowledge on the association between ticks and potentially pathogenic bacterial microorganisms for humans in Argentina to date. The presence of a potentially pathogenic microorganism in a tick is a necessary but not sufficient condition for transmission, as the vector must possess both competence and vectorial capacity. In Argentina, 44 species of hard ticks (family Ixodidae) have been recorded, among which those belonging to the genera Amblyomma and Rhipicephalus are the most relevant species due to their potential capacity for pathogen transmission, pa

A new dengue vaccine has recently been licensed in Argentina, with the Argentine government planning to acquire it in order to develop a vaccination strategy. As the disease is gradually following a path to endemicity in some regions of the country, the incorporation of these vaccines will have the potential to tackle the growing incidence of the disease and to reduce the disease burden. However, the establishment of the vaccination programme may also be susceptible of threats related to the epidemiological shift of the disease. Selecting a specific age group for the vaccine may result in a ch

Rhinosporidiosis is an infectious pathology caused by the aquatic protist pathogen Rhinosporidium seeberi that inhabits the fresh water of lakes or lagoons and in the soil. It is extremely rare, being endemic in India and Sri Lanka, although cases have been seen in countries in Europe, Africa and South America. It predominates in young males and affects both humans and animals. It is characterized by the formation of uni- or bilateral reddish polyps, mainly in the nasal cavity. Presenting airway symptoms include obstruction, epistaxis, rhinorrhea and foreign body sensation. We report the case

Several plants that contain indolizidine alkaloids, including swainsonine, are toxic to livestock, causing dysfunctional lysosomes and storage disease. Swainsonine induces a neurovisceral disease, known as locoism, in sheep, goats, and cattle, which occurs in several parts of the world, including, but not limited to, the western United States, China, and parts of Australia. In South America, locoism has been described in the Andean region of Argentina affecting sheep, cattle, and llamas. Intoxication by consumption of Astragalus punae was suspected in 4 llamas in Jujuy Province, northwestern A

Brucellosis in rams is caused by Brucella ovis or Brucella melitensis and it is considered one of the most important infectious diseases of males in sheep-raising countries. Molecular characterization of Brucella spp. achieved by multi-locus variable number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) is a powerful tool to genotype Brucella spp. However, data regarding B. ovis genotyping is scarce. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize the molecular diversity of B. ovis field-strains in Argentina. A total of 115 isolates of B. ovis from Argentina and Uruguay were genotyped using MLVA-16 and ana

The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is worldwide distributed showing a particular population structure that may differ among continents and countries. The aim of this study was to analyze the T. gondii population structure in Argentina and compare it with genotyping information from other South American countries. For the analysis, 39 samples from Argentina (isolates from the provinces of Buenos Aires, Misiones, Entre Ríos and San Luis) were genotyped using 10 multilocus PCR-RFLP markers including SAG1, SAG2 (5'-3'SAG2, alt. SAG2), SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, C22-8, C29-2, L358, PK1, and Apico. The T. gondi

Geographical clusters are defined as the occurrence of an unusual number of cases higher than expected in a given geographical area in a certain period of time. The aim of this study was to identify potential geographical clusters of specific selected congenital anomalies (CA) in Argentina. The cases were ascertained from 703,325 births, examined in 133 maternity hospitals in the 24 provinces of Argentina. We used the spatial scan statistic to determine areas of Argentina which had statistically significant elevations of prevalence. Prenatal diagnosis followed by referral of high-risk pregnanc

Some reports describe an increased mortality in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) compared to the general population. The aims of this study were to evaluate the cumulative survival in patients with AS and to establish possible factors associated with mortality. In cross-sectional retrospective study, AS patients were included according to 1984 modified NY criteria, in the 2000-2010 period, the prevalence of mortality was determined by review of medical records, telephone contact, family reports, and death certificates, and it was compared with mortality in Argentina's general populati

The aim of this study was to describe an outbreak of Shigella sonnei that occurred in the city of Lujan, Buenos Aires, Argentina, in July 2012. Five individuals were affected after eating a hand-made Viennese-style pastry at a family gathering. All of them presented with fever, joint pain, chills and non-bloody diarrhea containing mucus. Stool cultures were performed in all cases and the samples taken from the pastry ingredients were analyzed microbiologically. S.sonnei was isolated and identified in all the patients involved as well as in the almond cream filling. The isolates were analyzed f

Hepatitis C is the leading cause of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer in Argentina, where from 1.5% to 2.5% of adults are infected. Most of the infections were acquired 30-50 years ago. It is estimated that more than half of infected individuals are not aware of their infection. Even though the prevalence in blood donors has decreased to 0.45% at present, many high-prevalence populations still exist, where the reported prevalence ranges from 2.2% to 7.1%. Therapy is recommended for patients with fibrosis, in order to prevent disease progression, hepatic decompensation, and hepatoc
