Aristolochic acids (AAs) widely exist in such plants as Aristolochia and Asarum. The renal toxicity of AAs as well as its carcinogenicity to urinary system have been widely known. In 2003 and 2004, China prohibited the use of Aristolochiae Radix, Aristolochiae Manshuriensis Caulis and Aristolochiae Fangchi Radix, and required administering other AAs-containing medicines in accordance with the regulations for prescription drugs. In this paper, we retrieved literatures on the content determination of AAs in recent 10 years in China. It suggested that the AAs content is lower in Asarum herb, espe

Some anti-snake venom Chinese herbs were used to test the antagonizing effect on ET-1 and S6b. Oral administration has shown that both the water and alcohol extracts from Cissus assamica and Aristolochia fordiana, and the water extracts from Desmodium microphyllum, Cynanthum paniculatum and Polygonum cillinerve are very helpful in reducing the acute death caused by ET-1 and S6b(i.v.), while the extracts from Cissus assamica, Aristolochia fordiana and Cynanthum paniculatum can dilate the vasoconstriction by ET-1 in a dose dependent manner. Pharmacodynamic parameters have shown that the potencie

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are nitrophenanthrene carboxylic acids naturally produced by Aristolochia plants. These plants were widely used to prepare herbal remedies until AAs were observed to be highly nephrotoxic and carcinogenic to humans. Although the use of AA-containing Aristolochia plants in herbal medicine is prohibited in countries worldwide, emerging evidence nevertheless has indicated that AAs are the causative agents of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), an environmentally derived disease threatening numerous residents of rural farming villages along the Danube River in countries of t

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are natural compounds found in Aristolochiaceae plants, to which humans are frequently exposed through environmental and medicinal sources. AAs are highly nephrotoxic and carcinogenic, mediated by oxidative stress and bioactivation-induced DNA damage and mutagenicity. Nevertheless, some Lepidoptera, including Pachliopta aristolochiae, feed exclusively on Aristolochiaceae and sequester AAs as a chemical defense. This is uncommon in nature and it is not yet fully understood how these insects avoid the lethal effects of AAs. To address this question, we investigate Pac. a

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Aristolochic acid (AA) is an abundant compound in Aristolochia plants and various natural herbs. In the 1990s, a slimming formula used in Belgium that contains Aristolochia fangchi was reported to cause kidney damage and bladder cancer, and aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) is now well recognized worldwide. In October 2017, researchers reported an AA signature that is closely associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide.
COMMENT: There are differing opinions on the toxicity of AA, and different countries have taken different measures to address the i

Despite a ban on the use of plants of the Aristolochia genus in herbal medicine, as they contain known carcinogens, urothelial carcinoma attributable to the use of this plant seems to be more common than previously thought.

On October 18th, 2017, a research article named "Aristolochic acids and their derivatives are widely implicated in liver cancers in Taiwan and throughout Asia" was published on Science Translational Medicine. This article pointed out that herbs containing aristolochic acids could cause liver cancer by inducing the specific "aristolochic acids mutational signature". The public was also suggested to avoid the intake of herbs containing aristolochic acids. Since 2000, CFDA has gradually abolished the medicinal standards for herbs containing aristolochic acids such as caulis aristolochiae manshuri

BACKGROUND: Throughout history women have tried to control or enhance their fertility using herbal remedies, with various levels of societal support. Caribbean folk medicine has been influenced by European folk medicine, either through the early Spanish and French settlers or through the continuous immigration of Spanish-speaking peoples from Venezuela. Some folk uses are ancient and were documented by Galen and Pliny the Elder.
METHODS: Thirty respondents, ten of whom were male were interviewed from September 1996 to September 2000. The respondents were obtained by snowball sampling, and wer

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are nephrotoxic and carcinogenic derivatives found in several Aristolochia species. To date, the toxicity of AAs has been inferred only from the effects observed in patients suffering from a kidney disease called "aristolochic acid nephropathy" (AAN, formerly known as "Chinese herbs nephropathy"). More recently, the chronic poisoning with Aristolochia seeds has been considered to be the main cause of Balkan endemic nephropathy, another form of chronic renal failure resembling AAN. So far, it was assumed that AAs can enter the human food chain only through ethnobotanica

In May 1994 in Toulouse, there were two cases of end-stage renal failure (ESRF) related to Chinese herbs similar to those incriminated in the case series reported in Belgium in 1992-93, they led to an epidemiologic investigation aimed at evaluating the risk linked to these plants in France. Studies carried out by the Pharmacy Inspection showed that powders labelled Stephania Tetrandra, but consisting instead of Aristolochia Fangji and containing aristolochic acid, were sold in France between 1989 and May 1994. A systematic attempt to ascertain cases of ESRF associated with ingesting Chinese he

Aristolochic acid released from decaying Aristolochia clematitis weed is contaminating soil and food crops in Eastern Europe and is one of the major causes to Balkan endemic nephropathy. Measures should be taken to prevent people from being exposed to these highly potent phytotoxins. Research needs to develop remediation methods.

Aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN), a progressive renal interstitial fibrosis frequently associated with urothelial malignancies, was initially reported in a Belgian cohort of more than 100 patients after the intake of slimming pills containing a Chinese herb, Aristolochia fangchi. Although botanicals known or suspected to contain aristolochic acid (AA) were no longer permitted in many countries, several AAN cases were regularly observed all around the world. The incidence of AAN is probably much higher than initially thought, especially in Asia and the Balkans. In Asian countries, where trad

A HPLC procedure with a silica gel RP-18 reversed-phase column for the determination of aristolochic acids I, II in medicinal plants and slimming products was developed. The mobile system 0.3% ammonium carbonate solution-acetonitrile (75:25, v/v) with pH 7.5 was the optimal buffer to clearly separate aristolochic acids I, II within 20 min. The recovery of aristolochic acids I, II in medicinal plants and slimming products was better than 90% by extracting with methanol and purifying through a PHP-LH-20 column. The major component was aristolochic acid I in Aristolochia fangchi and the level ran

Botanicals can cause nephrotoxicity via numerous mechanisms, including disrupting renal blood flow, damaging compartments along the nephron, and obstructing urinary flow. While uncommon, there are various reports of botanical-induced nephrotoxicity in the literature, such as from aristolochia (Aristolochia spp.) and rhubarb (Rheum spp.). However, at present, it is a challenge to assess the toxic potential of botanicals because their chemical composition is variable due to factors such as growing conditions and extraction techniques. Therefore, selecting a single representative sample for an in

This review constitutes an overview of our investigations of aristolochic acid nephropathy, a chronic kidney disease associated with carcinomas of the upper urinary tract. Our studies began by confirming the hypothesis that chronic dietary poisoning by aristolochic acid was responsible for endemic (Balkan) nephropathy. A unique TP53 mutational signature in urothelial tumors and the presence of aristolactam-DNA adducts in the renal cortex, defined in the course of this research, proved to be robust biomarkers of exposure to this potent nephrotoxin and human carcinogen. Armed with this informati

Aristolochic acid I (AAI) is a potent nephrotoxic and carcinogenic compound produced by plants of the Aristolochiaceae family and thoroughly investigated as a main culprit in the etiology of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN). So far, the AAI exposure was demonstrated to occur through the consumption of Aristolochia clematitis plants as traditional remedies, and through the contamination of the surrounding environment in endemic areas: soil, food and water contamination. Our study investigated for the first time the level of AAI contamination in 141 soil and vegetable samples from two cultivated

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are carcinogenic and nephrotoxic plant alkaloids present in Aristolochia species, used in traditional medicine. Recent biomolecular and environmental studies have incriminated these toxins as an etiological agent in Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a severe kidney disease occurring in the Balkan Peninsula. The questions on how the susceptible populations are exposed to these toxins have not yet been clearly answered. Exposure to AAs through the food chain, and environmental pollution (soil/dust), could provide an explanation for the presence of BEN in the countries wh

Balkan endemic nephropathy is a chronic tubulointerstitial disease with insidious onset, slowly progressing to end-stage renal disease and frequently associated with urothelial carcinoma of the upper urinary tract (UTUC). It was described in South-East Europe at the Balkan peninsula in rural areas around tributaries of the Danube River. After decades of intensive investigation, the causative factor was identified as the environmental phytotoxin aristolochic acid (AA) contained in Aristolochia clematitis, a common plant growing in wheat fields that was ingested through home-baked bread. AA init
