Arkansas's telemedicine system has evolved since 2003 from a support mechanism for high-risk pregnancy consultations to an initiative that spans medical specialties, including asthma care, pediatric cardiology, gynecology, and mental health. The system has also expanded care to diverse populations, including incarcerated women and people with HIV/AIDS. This article describes the system's evolution, organization, and diverse activities. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the effect of Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) spending on smoking disparities in Arkansas, which distinguished itself from other states by investing all of its MSA funds in health-related programs.
METHODS: In 1996-2009 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we specified multivariate logistic models to examine gender and racial/ethnic disparities in smoking rates within Arkansas (a pre-post analysis) and between Arkansas and its 6 neighboring states.

The Arkansas method (AM) for isoniazid (INH) metabolite detection is a relatively inexpensive, simple, objective measure of adherence. The purpose of the study was to explore whether variations in urine sample handling and storage will produce accurate assay outcomes. Participants were a convenience sample of 28 adults and adolescents prescribed INH for latent tuberculosis infection. Participants provided one sample to test effects of the following: mixing processes; durations at room temperature, in a refrigerator, or frozen; and effects of freeze/thaw cycles on AM outcomes. Folic acid has been shown to reduce the risk of pregnancies affected by neural tube defects (NTDs) by as much as 70%. Cereal grains sold in the U.S. have been fortified with folic acid since 1998. The Arkansas Reproductive Health Monitoring System and the Arkansas Folic Acid Coalition have encouraged use of folic acid and monitored the impact of increased consumption of folic acid among Arkansans. OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of Antenatal and Neonatal Guidelines, Education and Learning Systems (ANGELS) on neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) preterm delivery rates.
STUDY DESIGN: In this longitudinal observational study, linked vital records and Medicaid claims records for 29,124 preterm births (April 2001-December 2012) to Medicaid covered women were used to examine factors predicting whether deliveries occurred at hospitals with neonatology-staffed NICUs. INTRODUCTION: Arkansas expanded Medicaid in 2014 using a Section 1115 waiver that included premium assistance for beneficiaries to purchase private plans through the state's marketplace. The waiver was modified in 2017 to require partial premium payments and implemented work requirements in mid-2018, which were later rescinded by federal court order. Lyme disease (LD), a vector-borne disease, causes illness for many individuals in the United States. All of the conditions for the promulgation of LD are present in one Southern state in the United States; yet this state reports lower numbers of LD than adjacent states. OBJECTIVE: To determine what factors increase the likelihood of osseointegration failure and implant extrusion with the use of osseointegration surgical hardware, for bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHAs), in children and adults.
PATIENTS: A total of 60 patients (42 pediatric [≤19 yr] and 18 adult patients [34-69 yr]) who received osseointegration surgical hardware for a BAHA at Arkansas Children's Hospital from October 2003 to May 2009 or at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences from November 2005 to May 2009, respectively.

During August 2016-July 2017, Arkansas experienced a large mumps (parotitis) outbreak; however, mumps-negative cases of parotitis were also identified in this period. Nineteen of 215 samples (9%) randomly selected for influenza PCR testing were positive for influenza A virus. Practitioners should consider influenza as a cause of nonmumps parotitis.

In this study, we reviewed cases of invasive disease due to nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae among children hospitalized at Arkansas Children's Hospital from 1993 to 2001. A total of 28 cases were examined, including 21 associated with bacteremia and 4 associated with meningitis. Of the patients examined, 86% were </=4 years of age, and 68% had underlying medical conditions. Characterization of the bacterial isolates by multilocus sequence type genotyping revealed significant overall genetic diversity, similar to the diversity in the general population structure for nontypeable H. influenzae

Two of five bobcats (Felis rufus) from southwestern Arkansas had natural pulmonary infections of Paragonimus kellicotti and Filaroides rostratus. Pairs of P. kellicotti were found in spherical cyst-like structures approximately 1 cm in diameter.
