How stiff is the armadillo? A comparison with the allometrics of mammalian respiratory mechanics.

Static respiratory mechanics were examined in the armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) and compared with allometric relationships newly derived for adult mammals from values in the literature. Normalised by body weight, chest wall compliance (Cw) in the armadillo is lower than predicted. Lung compliance (Cl) is also low in the armadillo, however it is appropriately matched to the resting lung volume (Vr) (ie. Cl/Vr infinity Mass0.0) and the ratio of Cw/Cl is appropriate for the size of the animal. Respiratory system resistance is high in the armadillo, presumably because of smaller airways associa

An attempt to produce experimental tuberculoid leprosy in the nine-banded armadillo.

In an attempt to produce experimental tuberculoid leprosy, three nine-banded armadillos, two with borderline tuberculoid lepromin reaction, and one with tuberculoid lepromin reaction, were chosen. They were injected subcutaneously in a four square centimetre area in the abdominal skin with saline suspension of 6.5 x 10(7) M. leprae. Induration of skin at the injected site appeared in 24 hours and persisted for 6 months in one and for 18 months in the other two animals. Histopathological examination of the infected site at 6 weeks, 18 and 20 months showed progressively decreasing granulomatous

Liver lesions in experimental lepromatoid leprosy of the armadillo. A histopathologic study.

A retrospective study of liver lesions was made in 13 armadillos infected intracutaneously with 10(7) M. leprae from the same inoculum, to evaluate the pathogenesis of the experimental disease. Survival times ranged from 13 to 55 months. In seven armadillos the liver lesions were markedly less severe than in six of these animals. The extent of the lesions was unrelated to the duration of the infection and was interpreted as reflecting individual differences in resistance. In contrast to man, leprosy bacilli were found in the liver cells of both groups of armadillos but to a lesser extent in th

Prevalence of Mycobacterium leprae in armadillos in Brazil: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Understanding the prevalence of M. leprae infection in armadillos is important because of evidence from Brazil and other countries of an association between contact with armadillos and the development of Hansen's Disease (leprosy). Our aim was to characterize studies which have investigated natural M. leprae infection in wild armadillos in Brazil, and to quantify and explore variability in the reported prevalence of infection. We conducted a systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42019155277) of publications in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Global Health, Scopus, LILACS, Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Di

Virulence attenuation and phenotypic variation of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis isolates obtained from armadillos and patients.

Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is the etiological agent of paracoccidioidomycosis, the most important systemic mycosis in Latin America. The virulence profiles of five isolates of P. brasiliensis were studied in two different moments and correlated with some colonial phenotypic aspects. We observed a significant decrease in the virulence and an intense phenotypic variation in the mycelial colony. The recognition of all ranges of phenotypic and virulence variation of P. brasiliensis, as well as its physiological and genetic basis, will be important for a better comprehension of its pathogenic an

Borderline tuberculoid leprosy in a woman from the state of Georgia with armadillo exposure.

In the southern and southeastern United States, the 9-banded armadillo is an important reservoir for Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent of leprosy (Hansen's disease). Here, we describe a woman living in Georgia with borderline tuberculoid leprosy who worked for many years in a garden where armadillos burrowed or were buried. There was no history of foreign travel or known exposure to a person with leprosy. Treatment with 6 once-monthly combined doses of rifampin, ofloxacin, and minocycline was successful.

A central role for the armadillo protein plakoglobin in the autoimmune disease pemphigus vulgaris.

In pemphigus vulgaris (PV), autoantibody binding to desmoglein (Dsg) 3 induces loss of intercellular adhesion in skin and mucous membranes. Two hypotheses are currently favored to explain the underlying molecular mechanisms: (a) disruption of adhesion through steric hindrance, and (b) interference of desmosomal cadherin-bound antibody with intracellular events, which we speculated to involve plakoglobin. To investigate the second hypothesis we established keratinocyte cultures from plakoglobin knockout (PG-/-) embryos and PG+/+ control mice. Although both cell types exhibited desmosomal cadher

Olfactory mucosa of the South American armadillo Chaetophractus villosus: an ultrastructural study.

The sense of olfaction in armadillos plays an important role, suggested by the great development of the nasal structures, olfactory bulbs, and related brain regions. The mammalian olfactory mucosa is a privileged site of neuronal death and regeneration during the whole life span. A detailed knowledge of its ultrastructure is convenient for gaining insight into the factors controlling those phenomena. We performed this work in species not previously studied in order to provide a firm basis for further research on those factors. No information is available on the histology and ultrastructure of

[Pathomorphologic changes in the internal organs of intact and Mycobacterium leprae-infected 9-banded armadillos].

The internal organs of nine-banded armadillos were examined histologically before and after inoculation of the animals with M. leprae. 3--4 months after the inoculation two animals developed tuberculoid structures in the lungs, liver and skin. A conclusion is made that experimental leprosy infection in nine-banded armadillos may run its course not only in the lepromatous but also in the tuberculoid form of the disease.

Structural and functional dissection of Toxoplasma gondii armadillo repeats only protein.

Rhoptries are club-shaped, regulated secretory organelles that cluster at the apical pole of apicomplexan parasites. Their discharge is essential for invasion and the establishment of an intracellular lifestyle. Little is known about rhoptry biogenesis and recycling during parasite division. In Toxoplasma gondii, positioning of rhoptries involves the armadillo repeats only protein (ARO) and myosin F (MyoF). Here, we show that two ARO partners, ARO-interacting protein (AIP) and adenylate cyclase β (ACβ) localize to a rhoptry subcompartment. In absence of AIP, ACβ disappears from the rhoptries.

Sporothrix schenckii sensu stricto isolated from soil in an armadillo's burrow.

Sporotrichosis is a polymorphic disease of man and animals caused by traumatic implantation of propagules into the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Pathogenic species includes S. brasiliensis, S. schenckii, S. globosa and S. luriei. The disease is remarkable for its occurrence as sapronoses and/or zoonosis outbreaks in tropical and subtropical areas; although, the ecology of the clinical clade is still puzzling. Here, we describe an anamorphic Sporothrix strain isolated from soil in an armadillo's burrow, which was located in a hyper endemic area of Paracoccidioidomycosis in Brazil. This isolate

The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is an intermediate host for Sarcocystis neurona.

The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is an intermediate host of at least three species of Sarcocystis, Sarcocystis dasypi, Sarcocystis diminuta, and an unidentified species; however, life cycles of these species have not been determined. Following feeding of armadillo muscles containing sarcocysts to the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), the opossums shed sporulated Sarcocystis sporocysts in their faeces. Mean dimensions for sporocysts were 11.0x7.5 microm and each contained four sporozoites and a residual body. Sporocysts were identified as Sarcocystis neurona using PCR and

Light microscopic and ultrastructural features of the Harderian gland of the nine-banded armadillo.

The Harderian gland of the nine-banded armadillo is a mixed, compound tubuloacinar gland located in the medioposterior aspect of the orbit. The gland is lobulated and appears homogeneous in colour and texture. Harderian glands of both male and female fluoresce a pale yellow-green, indicating the lack of porphyrins. At the light microscopic level, the gland contains lobules which synthesize different secretory products. The lobules of the gland adjacent to the eyeball (the proximal point) contain predominantly mucus-secreting acini which empty into a well developed system of intralobular ducts.

Prevalence of Leprosy-Causing Bacteria in Mexican Long-Nosed Armadillos (Dasypus mexicanus) in Alabama, USA.

Previous studies have examined prevalence of leprosy-causing bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis, in rural Mexican long-nosed armadillo (Dasypus mexicanus) populations of the southeastern USA. However, few prevalence studies have been conducted in Alabama nor in urbanized, human-dominated areas where potential zoonotic transmission may be a public health concern. This study evaluated the prevalence of leprosy-causing bacteria in armadillos from rural, suburban, and urban zones in Lee and Mobile County, Alabama, USA. This study detected the first evidence of M. leprae-

IgM and IgG antibody response to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in naturally infected wild armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus).

We studied the extent to which wild nine-banded armadillos, Dasypus novemcinctus, produce immune humoral responses specifically directed against characteristic Paracoccidioides brasiliensis antigens. Such antibody production might reflect direct contact with the ecological microniche of P. brasiliensis, or might merely reflect inhalation of widely distributed airborne propagules. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was designed containing purified glycoprotein gp43 and gp70 antigens from P. brasiliensis as well as cross-reactive antisera originally targeted against human IgM (mu chain

Cerebriform colonies of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis isolated from nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) at room temperature.

Twelve isolates of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis generated cerebriform colonies at room temperature on potato glucose agar slants (PDA). These isolates contained abundant chlamydospores and yeast-like cells and are a subset of the 65 isolates obtained from nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus). They grew as a yeast form with typical multiple buddings at 37 degrees C on brain heart infusion agar supplemented with 1% glucose. After replating on PDA and culturing at room temperature for 2 months, the mutants appeared as cottonous colonies, which indicated that the morphological characteri
