Inability to cannulate the coronary sinus in patients with supraventricular arrhythmias: congenital and acquired coronary sinus atresia.

We report 4 cases of congenital and acquired coronary sinus ostial atresia incidentally found during electrophysiologic assessment for supraventricular arrhythmias. Congenital variants consisted of coronary sinus drainage predominantly via persistent left superior vena cavae and partial coronary sinus unroofing into the left atrium. The acquired variant was inadvertently produced during surgery for cor triatriatum. A variety of electrophysiologic substrates including right and left-sided accessory pathways and both typical and atypical AV nodal reciprocating tachycardia were identified. Approa

Idiopathic 2:1 AV Block With Ventriculophasic Sinus Arrhythmia in a Young Male.

BACKGROUND: Second-degree atrioventricular (AV) block in young adults is rare and typically associated with structural, infectious, or genetic etiologies. Ventriculophasic sinus arrhythmia is classically associated with complete heart block and is rarely described in isolated 2:1 AV block. CASE SUMMARY: A 23-year-old male with no prior medical history presented to the clinic with influenza-like symptoms and was incidentally found to have marked bradycardia. Electrocardiogram revealed 2:1 AV Block with right bundle branch block, right-axis deviation, and ventriculophasic sinus arrhythmia. Comp

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia in young men and women at different chest wall configurations.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is an acceleration of heart rate during inspiration and deceleration with expiration. We asked whether or not in humans some of the volume-related information necessary for RSA originated from the chest wall. Men and women, 19-20 years old, were breathing supine. Rib cage and abdomen displacement provided an index of tidal volume (VT) and RSA was computed breath-by-breath from the peak and trough of instantaneous heart rate. First, measurements were taken during breathing at rest (protocol a, 129 male and 164 female). Then, in subgroups of the original subjec

Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia and its Association with Pain in Women with Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the cardiac autonomic control at rest and during the deep breathing test (DBT) and its association with pain in women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). METHODS: The study included 20 women with FMS and 20 healthy women (control group, CG). The pain was quantified by assessing the pressure pain threshold (PPT), VAS of pain, and the pain component of the SF-36 questionnaire. The RR intervals were recorded in the supine position and during the DBT. The heart rate variability (VHR) was measured by methods in the time and frequency domain. RESULTS: The group with FMS had abn

Sinus arrhythmia and pupil size in Chiari I malformation: evidence of autonomic dysfunction.

In a prospective study on latent autonomic dysfunction in the Chiari type I malformation, 15 patients were examined for degree of sinus arrhythmia in the supine and the sitting positions with a deep breathing test, and for pupil size and function with electronic pupillometry after sympathicomimetic eyedrop stimulation. The 5 patients with brainstem signs had a marked disturbance of sinus arrhythmia, which was more pronounced in the supine than in the sitting position. The clinical signs suggested a dysfunction of the reflex centers in the medulla rather than of the lower cranial nerves. The pa

Suppression of ouabain-induced atrial arrhythmias by carotid sinus stimulation.

In dogs anaesthetized with chloralose ectopic atrial arrhythmias were produced by subepicardial injection of ouabain. Stimulation of the right carotid sinus abruptly suppressed the ectopic arrhythmias. They returned on cessation of stimulation and sometimes already during the period of stimulation. It is suggested that in view of its response to carotid sinus stimulation the ouabain-induced arrhythmia resembles paroxysmal atrial tachycardia and that it is distinct from the aconitine-induced arrhythmia which on account of its response to vagal stimulation has been classified as atrial flutter.

Insights into sinus arrhythmia of the dog: Acetylcholine perfusion of canine right atrium results in beat-to-beat patterns that mimic sinus arrhythmia supporting exit block in the sinoatrial conduction pathways.

Sinus arrhythmia of the dog is unique because of the pronounced alternating beat-to-beat intervals. The clustering of these short (faster rates) and long (slower rates) intervals is not just influenced by autonomic input from breathing; sinus arrhythmia can persist in the panting or apneic dog. The multiplicity of central and peripheral influences on the sinus node complicates the unraveling of the mechanisms of sinus arrhythmia. Studies of the sinus node suggest that acetylcholine can slow cellular depolarization and block sinoatrial conduction. Electrocardiographic monitoring of the dog supp

Coupling between prefrontal brain activity and respiratory sinus arrhythmia in infants and adults.

Self-regulation is an essential aspect of healthy child development. Even though infants depend on their caregivers for co-regulation during the first years, they begin to gain regulatory abilities through social interactions as well as their own developing agency and inhibitory control. These early regulatory abilities continue to increase with the development of both the prefrontal cortex and the vagal system. Importantly, theoretical accounts have suggested that the prefrontal cortex and the vagal system are linked through forward and backward feedback loops via the limbic system. Decreased

[Inadequate, inappropriate sinus-node tachycardia. An old cardiac arrhythmia in a new perspective].

Introduction: The inadequate, inappropriate sinus-node tachycardia is not a rare clinical syndrome, defined as a non-paroxysmal, increased sinus-rate at rest, and/or inadequate response to physical and/or emotional stress, and palpitations. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe our experiences with the investigations of our inappropriate sinus-node tachycardia patients. Method: In the last years, 104 patients (92 women, 12 men, mean age: 31 ± 10 years) were treated with this cardiac arrhythmia entity. All patients underwent 12 leads ECG, chest X-ray, echocardiography, Holter-monitoring an

Otitis media and respiratory sinus arrhythmia across infancy and early childhood: Polyvagal processes?

Otitis media (OM)-or middle-ear inflammation-is the most widely diagnosed childhood illness, with evidence implicating OM in a range of distal problems (e.g., language delays, attention problems). Polyvagal theory (Porges, 1995, 2007) posits that there also are likely important connections between middle-ear functioning and children's developing parasympathetic nervous systems (PNS). Using prospective longitudinal data from the Family Life Project (n = 748), we tested within- and between-person relations between indicators of OM (middle-ear spectral gradient angle; SGA) and children's trajecto

Measuring the slot machine zone with attentional dual tasks and respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

Recent accounts of problematic electronic gaming machine (EGM) gambling have suggested attentional pathology among at-risk players. A putative slot machine zone is characterized by an intense immersion during game play, causing a neglect of outside events and competing goals. Prior studies of EGM immersion have relied heavily upon retrospective self-report scales. Here, the authors attempt to identify behavioral and psychophysiological correlates of the immersion experience. In samples of undergraduate students and experienced EGM users from the community, they tested 2 potential behavioral me

Stability of respiratory sinus arrhythmia in children and young adolescents: a longitudinal examination.

The stability of children's baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and RSA regulation were examined longitudinally, with a 2-year lag between each of two waves of data collection. Associations between baseline RSA and RSA regulation also were examined in this study. During two laboratory sessions, 2 years apart, children were exposed to two stressors: exposure to an audiotaped conflict between two adults and a problem-solving task in which the child had to trace a star while looking into a mirror. Measures of baseline RSA and RSA regulation during the two stressors were obtained. Baseline

Inter-relations among declines in arterial distensibility, baroreflex function and respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that structural and neural cardiovascular (CV) deficits may be intimately linked. Specifically, decreased carotid distensibility with age may blunt the arterial baroreflex, thereby reducing resting cardiac vagal tone. BACKGROUND: Increased CV risk is associated with lower carotid distensibility, impaired baroreflex function and reduced respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), possibly representing a direct path between structural and neural CV deficits. METHODS: We estimated the mechanostructural and neural components of baroreflex function and examined their relation

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia in children with severe cyanotic and pallid breath-holding spells.

In this study we investigated centrally mediated parasympathetic regulation of modulated cardiac vagal tone among children with severe cyanotic and pallid breath-holding spells by examining respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia was evaluated in 41 children; 17 subjects with cyanotic breath-holding spells (6 boys, 11 girls; mean age 37.1 months), 7 subjects with pallid breath-holding spells (2 boys, 5 girls; mean age 33.0 months), and 17 controls (8 boys, 9 girls; mean age 41.2 months). Subjects had recurrent (more than 3) severe breath-holding spells. Each subject's electr

Heart rate variability in healthy term newborns: the contribution of respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

Cardiorespiratory interactions in healthy full term newborns were investigated. Spectral analysis was used on heart rate and breathing data from 22 neonates 2-5 days old to reveal coincident frequencies in the breathing and heart rate variability (HRV) spectra, thus identifying respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). The spectral description of HRV in healthy term newborns revealed a consistent and distinct RSA feature, with a mean contribution of over 30%. The contribution of RSA to HRV was dependent on breathing frequency and absolute RSA power. The mechanisms that produce this cardiorespiratory

A systematic literature review of respiratory sinus arrhythmia response to psychotherapy in pediatric samples.

The present review synthesizes research examining changes in parasympathetic biomarkers of self-regulation (i.e., respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA] activity) over the course of intervention or prevention programs in pediatric samples. Based on a preregistered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42024550670), PubMed and PsycINFO databases were searched until July 1, 2025 to identify 13 peer-reviewed, empirical studies reporting indices of RSA activity in samples of infants, children, and adolescents participating in psychotherapy treatment programs. Study quality was evaluated using design-specific tools f

Sustained ventricular arrhythmia and sinus node dysfunction revealing a cardiac amyloidosis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Amyloidosis is an infiltrative multisystem disease due to extracellular deposition of fibrils in tissues and organs. Cardiac involvement can result in progressive heart failure, conduction abnormalities and arrhythmias and is associated with a poor prognosis. Atrial arrhythmias and non-sustained ventricular arrhythmias are the most common arrhythmias in cardiac amyloidosis. However, the association of sinus node dysfunction and sustained ventricular arrhythmia is quite exceptional. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old male patient was admitted with a gradually worseni
