BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are musculoskeletal conditions that can inhibit the normal function of temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and affect the patient's quality of life, negatively. Arthrocentesis (AC) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used for treating TMDs. The aim of present paper is to evaluate the advantages of administrating corticosteroid (CS) during AC by reviewing high quality released articles.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Searching on Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus databases were performed with focusing on prop

Arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be done either conventionally or under ultrasonographic guidance, and we have compared the effectiveness of the two techniques. Twenty patients who required arthrocentesis of the TMJ were randomly assigned to ultrasonographically guided (US-guided) and conservative arthrocentesis (n=10 in each group). The number of relocations of the first and second punctures, pain experienced during each procedure measured using a visual analogue scale (VAS), and the duration of the procedure were the main outcome variables. The pain score compared with

Arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint is an effective treatment for some disorders, and is usually done under local anaesthesia. We know of few studies that have compared the ease of arthrocentesis and its outcomes under local or general anaesthesia, so we studied 32 patients (n=16 in each group). Postoperative oedema and pain, maximum mouth opening, duration of arthrocentesis, and ease of operation were assessed to compare the relative effectiveness of the two types of anaesthetic. Scores for duration of arthrocentesis (p=0.003) and ease of procedure (0.004) differed significantly, wh

INTRODUCTION: Arthocentesis of the temporomandibular joint combined with intra-articular washout and, more recently, intra-articular injection of pharmacological agents has been developed from the 1990s and is nowadays extensively in use for the treatment of temporomandibular dysfunctions (TMDs). The goal of our work was to answer 3 questions: 1. Is intra-articular washout effective for the treatment of TMDs ? 2. What kind of pharmacological agents may nowadays be injected in addition to washout and are these injections useful ? 3. What is the place of these treatments in the treatment strateg

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of adverse events of diagnostic arthrocentesis in patients with possible gout.
METHODS: Consecutive patients underwent arthrocentesis and were evaluated at 6 weeks to determine adverse events. The 95% CI were obtained by bootstrapping.
RESULTS: Arthrocentesis was performed in 910 patients, and 887 (97.5%) were evaluated for adverse events. Any adverse event was observed in 12 participants (1.4%, 95% CI 0.6-2.1). There was 1 case (0.1%, 95% CI 0-0.34) of septic arthritis.
CONCLUSIONS: Diagnostic arthrocentesis is associated with a low frequency of advers

Arthrocentesis is a method of flushing out the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that is currently performed by providing a double access to the joint space. Several studies have shown that arthrocentesis of the upper compartment of the TMJ may be a highly effective method to restore normal maximal mouth opening and functioning. Nonetheless, the classical 2-needle technique has some limits, such as the low tolerability and difficulty in performing it in the presence of intra-articular adherences. The adoption of a single-needle for both fluid injection and aspiration might have some advantages wit

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of single-puncture techniques in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis for the management of disk displacement without reduction (DDwoR). A total of thirty-six patients diagnosed with DDwoR were randomly and blindly assigned to two treatment groups (N = 18 each): Group 1 underwent TMJ arthrocentesis using a concentric needle-cannula system with protrusive movements, while Group 2 received TMJ arthrocentesis with a concentric needle-cannula system but without protrusive movements. The following variables were recorded and compared bet

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) treatment varies from conservative therapy to invasive procedures such as arthrocentesis. The procedure is simple and has speed, low cost, low morbidity and good patient acceptance. Literature variations, however, have been found about the type and volume of the solution used for the irrigation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to compare the results provided by two different volumes of 0.9% saline solution (100 ml and 250 ml) used in arthrocentesis technique for TMD treatment. It included patients

BACKGROUND: It is necessary to clarify that temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are one of the most misdiagnosed and mistreated maladies in the medical practice. It is an umbrella term, embracing conditions which involve the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related muscles. One of these common irritating disorders is the internal derangement which is used specifically to describe the displacement of the TMJ disc. The treatment can vary according to the severity and chronicity into non-invasive, minimally invasive, and invasive procedures. However, permanent recovery is rarely obtained.

OBJECTIVES: Most of the patients treated for temporomandibular joint disorders constituted from the female population, and this situation is generally hypothesized and demonstrated in several studies. Arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint is a minimally invasive and effective treatment method in the management of patients with stage III and stage IV Wilkes syndrome. This study was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of this method between menopausal and nonmenopausal female patients.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 59 patients (25 menopausal and 34 nonmenopausal) were evaluated according to

PURPOSE: Although arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has been shown to be an effective, minimally invasive surgical procedure, there is a paucity of literature that has examined its effectiveness under intravenous (IV) sedation compared with general anesthesia (GA) with a secure airway.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with TMJ arthrocentesis was performed. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on type of anesthesia (sedation vs general) and location of surgery (office vs hospital). Visual analog scales were used to assess TMJ pain, headaches, ja

OBJECTIVES: Double puncture arthrocentesis (DPA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMD) is considered an effective preservative option for managing mandibular condylar head fractures. However, the procedure is commonly performed by a traditional "blind" method using anatomical characteristics. In the present study, an ultrasonography (US) device was applied for the treatment of a case with a fractured mandibular condyle.
METHODS: A 79-year-old female was diagnosed right side condylar head fracture complaining pain of right TMD and reduced mouth opening range: inter-incisor distance of 20 mm. Si

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a rare sequela following arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint. This case report discusses a constellation of symptoms, findings, and appropriate management of a patient with a superficial temporal AVF. Several findings in this case, including vertigo, nystagmus, and hearing loss, have not been previously documented in the literature.

INTRODUCTION: TMJ arthrocentesis involves lavage of the upper joint space which forces the disc apart from the fossa and washes away the inflammatory components of the joint. To increase the joint space during arthrocentesis, the patient is usually asked to open the mouth and deviate it to the opposite side so as to distract the condyle from the glenoid fossa thereby increasing joint space.
METHOD: The authors describe a simple and rapid technique of preparing a custom-made mouth prop to hold the mandible in eccentric position during arthrocentesis.
FINDINGS: The custom-made mouth prop is an

PURPOSE: The present study was undertaken to elucidate the factors responsible for the failure of arthrocentesis to cure persistent joint pain in patients with nonreducing articular disc displacement in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients with internal derangement of the TMJ were selected. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to examine the configuration and position of the articular discs, cortical changes, and bone marrow abnormalities in the condyle and the presence of joint effusion. Arthrocentesis was then performed, and the patients were followed

Septic arthritis is one potential cause of pediatric joint effusion and pain that may lead to significant morbidity. We present a case where point-of-care ultrasound was used to identify and aspirate a joint effusion in a pediatric patient with septic arthritis of the ankle, facilitating timely diagnosis and care. We review the technique for arthrocentesis of the ankle and literature on point-of-care ultrasound in the diagnosis of pediatric septic arthritis.
