Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille) is a species complex that spans North, Central, and South America and which is a key vector of all known discrete typing units (DTU) of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease. Morphological and genetic studies indicate that T. dimidiata is a species complex with three principal haplogroups (hg) in Mexico. Different markers and traits are still inconclusive regarding if other morphological differentiation may indicate probable behavioral and vectorial divergences within this complex. In this paper we compared the antennae of three Mexican haplogr

Behaviorally active compounds of longhorned beetles, including sex/aggregation pheromones and plant odorants, have been extensively applied to the integrated pest management. It is largely unknown, however, how beetle's chemosensory proteins (CSPs) mediate the detection of semiochemicals. Here, we characterized six antenna-enriched PantCSPs in Pharsalia antennata, revealing the strong binding to two floral scents syringaldehyde and β-ionone (dissociation constant, Ki < 5.5 μM). In particular, PantCSP11 presented the binding preference to 11-12C aliphatic alcohols/aldehydes (Ki = 0.96 ± 0.02 μM

Xyleborus affinis Eichthoff is a neotropical ambrosia beetle that, in certain regions such as the United States and Mexico, has been associated with exotic phytopathogenic fungi causing extensive tree mortality. Although studies relating its olfactory response to volatile compounds and trapping systems have been published, factors such as the insect's physiological condition, which can affect its recognition or response to odors, have not been studied. Here, we evaluated the electroantennographic (EAG) response of wild and laboratory reared X. affinis females to 70% ethanol, a compound known t

BACKGROUND: Insects perceive chemical cues from conspecifics and hosts through their sensitive chemosensory system. The chemosensory receptors, which are mainly represented by odorant receptors (ORs), ionotropic receptors (IRs), and gustatory receptors (GRs), are highly enriched in the chemosensory tissues and are crucial for perceiving and transducing chemical signals. RESULTS: In this study, we performed a transcriptome analysis of different tissues of Protegira songi, a notorious defoliator that specifically infests the medicinal and rubber plant Eucommia ulmoides and identified 77 candidat

Insects exhibit olfactory plasticity to optimize their survival and reproduction, which ensures that their sensory preferences flexibly meets their needs. However, a comprehensive understanding of the sequential regulatory mechanisms driving these sensory adjustments is lacking. Addressing this knowledge gap is crucial for clarifying how the olfactory system of insect flexibly meets their reproductive needs. Using electroantennogram (EAG) and single-sensillum recordings, we found that female Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae) displayed distinct olfactory preferences for ovipos

A scanning electron microscopy investigation of the antenna and maxillary palp of the adult of Sarcophaga tibialis Macquart (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), a species of medical, veterinary, and forensic relevance, is presented for the first time. Adults of both sexes used in this study were obtained from larvae collected in a case of traumatic myiasis in a domestic cat in northern Italy. The antenna of S. tibialis is that typical of cyclorrhaphan Diptera, consisting of three segments: the scape, the pedicel, and the postpedicel, bearing the arista. The scape is covered by microtrichia and has a row

Oviposition response of gravid Culex quinquefasciatus females to a series of synthetic fatty acid esters was evaluated at 10ppm under laboratory conditions. Octyl tridecanoate and propyl octadecanoate elicited 85% and 73% increased ovipositional responses respectively, compared to control, among the 16 esters tested. Other 14 esters showed highly significant repellency (67-96%) to gravid females. Standard 3-methyl indole received 69% increased egg deposition compared to control. In the Y-tube olfactometer, gravid C. quinquefasciatus females exhibited 78, 64% and 58% orientation respectively to

Vibrational communication is one of the least understood channels of communication. Most studies have focused on the role of substrate-borne signals in insect mating behavior, where a male and a female establish a stereotyped duet that enables partner recognition and localization. While the effective communication range of substrate-borne signals may be up to several meters, it is generally accepted that insect vibrational communication is limited to a continuous substrate. Until now, interplant communication in absence of physical contact between plants has never been demonstrated in a vibrat

Following acute neural injury, severed axons undergo programmed Wallerian degeneration over several following days. While sleep has been linked with synaptic reorganization under other conditions, the role of sleep in responses to neural injuries remains poorly understood. To study the relationship between sleep and neural injury responses, we examined Drosophila melanogaster following the removal of antennae or other sensory tissues. Daytime sleep is elevated after antennal or wing injury, but sleep returns to baseline levels within 24 h after injury. Similar increases in sleep are not observ

A total of 228 sampling stations were visited for benthic fauna during a series of oceanographic cruises in the Gulf of California, west coast of the Baja California Peninsula, and Eastern Central Pacific from year 1991 to 2014. Among others, three fish species of the genus Dibranchus were caught in 28 stations. Of these, D. spongiosa was the most common and abundant. Close inspection of this fish revealed the presence of a new species of parasitic copepod, Chondracanthus dibranchi sp. nov., found in the gill cavity of seven specimens of D. spongiosa. Chondracanthus dibranchi sp. nov. seems to

Olfaction is crucial for short distance host location and pheromone detection by insects. Complexes of olfactory receptors (ORs) are composed of odor-specific ORs and OR co-receptors (Orco). Orcos are widely co-expressed with odor-specific ORs and are conserved across insect taxa. A number of Orco orthologs have been studied to date, although none has been identified in cereal aphids. In this study, an Orco gene ortholog was cloned from the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae, and named "SaveOrco"; RNA interference (RNAi) reduced the expression of SaveOrco to 34.11% in aphids, resulting in weaker EAG

The Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, is considered to be one of the most serious invasive pests of deciduous trees in North America. An efficient monitoring trap is needed to detect and delimit new introductions and assess population densities of established infestations. Previous studies on A. glabripennis have shown that males produce a two-component aggregation pheromone that consists of a 1:1 blend of 4-(n-heptyloxy)butan-1-ol and 4-(n-heptyloxy)butanal. Moderate attraction in field trapping studies suggested that there may be additional chemical cues missing. Volatiles f

Venom-injecting structures have arisen independently in unrelated arthropods including scorpions, spiders, centipedes, larval owlflies and antlions, and Hymenoptera (wasps, ants, and bees). Most arthropods use venom primarily as an offensive weapon to subdue prey, and only secondarily in defense against enemies. Venom is injected by biting with fangs or stinging with a specialized hypodermic structure used exclusively for the delivery of venom (usually modified terminal abdominal segments). A true sting apparatus, previously known only in scorpions and aculeate wasps, is now known in a third g

Bombykol, (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadien-1-ol, is a sole sex pheromone component essential for mating in the silkmoth Bombyx mori. The bombykol isomer EE-kol is consistently present across all silkmoth strains tested, but its role in sex pheromone communication remains unclear. Previous studies have indicated that BmOR1 is involved in EE-kol detection. Here, we reevaluated the function using the Xenopus oocyte expression system and two-electrode voltage clamp recording method. EE-kol elicited inward currents in BmOR1-expressing oocytes only at very high concentrations and with a markedly smaller res

BACKGROUND: The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is a competent vector for the spread of several viral arboviruses including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Several vital mosquito behaviors linked to survival and reproduction are primarily dependent on a sophisticated olfactory system for semiochemical perception. However, a limited number of studies has hampered our understanding of the relationship between the A. albopictus acute olfactory system and the complex chemical world.
RESULTS: Here, we performed a qRT-PCR assay on antennae from A. albopictus of differing sex, age and physiol

Hygienic behaviour (HB) is a social immunity trait in honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) whereby workers detect, uncap and remove unhealthy brood, improving disease resistance in the colony. This is clearly economically valuable; however, the molecular mechanism behind it is not well understood. The freeze-killed brood (FKB) assay is the conventional method of HB selection, so we compared odour profiles of FKB and live brood to find candidate HB-inducing odours. Surprisingly, we found that significantly more brood pheromone (β-ocimene) was released from FKB. β-ocimene abundance also positively cor

Ivermectin is a veterinary pharmaceutical generally used to control the ecto- and endoparasites of livestock, but its use has resulted in adverse effects on coprophilous insects, causing population decline and biodiversity loss. There is currently no information regarding the direct effects of ivermectin on dung beetle physiology and behaviour. Here, based on electroantennography and spontaneous muscle force tests, we show sub-lethal disorders caused by ivermectin in sensory and locomotor systems of Scarabaeus cicatricosus, a key dung beetle species in Mediterranean ecosystems. Our findings sh

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a powerful disinfectant recently adopted as a therapeutic agent in aquaculture. A concentration of 10 mg L(-1) PAA effectively suppresses zoospores of Aphanomyces astaci, the agent of crayfish plague. To aid in establishing safe therapeutic guideline, the effects of PAA on treated crayfish were investigated through assessment of histological changes and oxidative damage. Adult female signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (n = 135) were exposed to 2 mg L(-1) and 10 mg L(-1) of PAA for 7 days followed by a 7 day recovery period in clean water.
