In the field of orthopedic surgery, arthroscopic surgery has become widespread since its first development by Dr. Watanabe in 1950. Arthroscopic surgery for the knee joint is now a common procedure, but this surgery is not so common when the procedure involves the shoulder joint. Although using arthroscopic surgery is not so common on the shoulder joint, there are several benefits by utilizing arthroscopy in such cases. Some of the benefits are; minimal scar formation, no functional limitation of the deltoid muscle, and a quick recovery time. So it is believed that due to these benefits, shoul

Arthroscopy of the shoulder is well established as a diagnostic procedure. It carries a greater degree of accuracy than conventional imaging techniques and in addition allows the assessment of instability and the degree of mechanical derangement inside the joint. Arthroscopic surgical procedures in the shoulder are in the developing stage. Arthroscopic acromioplasty for impingement syndrome has been shown to be a safe, effective procedure and probably better than conventional surgery. In the older patient, arthroscopic debridement of the rotator cuff is very effective at relieving pain. Arthro

Arthroscopic meniscal repair is a promising new technique for treating peripheral meniscal tears. With proper attention to surgical technique, the repair can be safely performed by any surgeon with moderate arthroscopic skills. We recommend that in all cases the capsule be exposed through a small incision to identify and protect the neurovascular structures. When an associated ACL tear is present, ligamentous reconstruction is also recommended. Although we currently limit our repairs to peripheral tears, newer techniques may expand indications for this procedure.

In the first 1000 arthroscopic operations performed by one surgeon 136 patients had two or more procedures, making a total of 1168 during the 1000 operations. The indications for operation were internal mechanical derangements in 565 patients, anterior knee pain in 246, disorders of the synovium in 77, ligament injuries in 63, and degenerative joint disease in 49. Complications included fracture of instruments in the knee in five patients, haemarthrosis in 10, deep vein thrombosis in three, and synovial fistula in one. In no patient was the wound infected. A total of 26 different operations wa

Long head of the biceps tendon pathology is a frequent cause of anterior shoulder pain. Tenotomy is technically simple but may lead to cosmetic deformity and muscle cramping, whereas tenodesis better preserves the biceps contour but involves a more complex procedure. Multiple surgical techniques and fixation methods are available. No single technique has emerged as clinically superior, and no gold standard has been established. Among the various techniques and fixation sites, subpectoral placement within cancellous bone has been proposed as a favorable option for long head of the biceps tendon

The Bankart lesion is a common injury to the labrum in the shoulder joint, usually resulting from anterior shoulder dislocation. Arthroscopic Bankart repair is a surgical technique used to treat recurrent dislocations by reattaching the labrum to the glenoid rim using suture anchors. Typically, 3 portals are created: 1 for visualization and 2 for instrumentation. However, this Technical Note proposes a single working portal approach using a 70° arthroscope from the posterior portal. This technique enhances visualization and prevents portal jamming, particularly in cases with a small rotator in

Rotator cuff repair is one of the most common surgical procedures done in the shoulder. Traditionally, repair has required an open incision with release of a portion of the deltoid from the acromion. In the past decade, an arthroscopically-assisted, mini-open approach has gained popularity. This has been facilitated by advances in the use of arthroscopy. This trend toward a more minimally invasive approach has continued as arthroscopic techniques continue to improve and advance. An all-arthroscopic approach recently has been used for rotator cuff repairs. The arthroscopic approach offers sever

Five infants with an acute hematogenous septic arthritis of the knee were treated with arthroscopically assisted drainage using the Micro-Joint Arthroscope (MJA; Linvatec, Largo, FL) combined with antibiotic therapy and early postoperative motion. The average patient age was 16 months (range, 4 to 24 months). No surgical or anesthetic complications occurred. All knees were clinically and radiologically normal at an average follow-up of 26 months.

PURPOSE: To assess and quantify the improvement in visualization of humeral insertion of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) using a 70° scope compared with a 30° scope during elbow arthroscopy.
METHODS: Twenty patients undergoing elbow arthroscopy for different pathologic conditions were enrolled in this single-center study. Visualization of the medial gutter of the elbow was evaluated by using both the 70° and the 30°scope. During the procedure, a needle was inserted at 45° with respect to the axis of the forearm, directed toward the intra-articular humeral emergence of the MCL. Four areas

Lateral ankle sprains are very common injuries that sometimes lead to chronic lateral ankle instability. The modified Broström operation is the gold standard procedure for treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability. Currently, this operation is performed arthroscopically. Broström repair depends on the quality of the remnant ligament. In cases with an insufficient remnant ligament, Gould augmentation or reconstruction using the gracilis tendon is generally performed. Recently, tape augmentation (internal brace) also has been used to support an insufficient ligament. This article introduces

PURPOSE: To use a nationwide database to determine differences in cost between patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff tear with open vs. arthroscopic biceps tenodesis (BT).
METHODS: The 2014 State Ambulatory Surgical and Services Databases from 6 US states was utilized. All cases with CPT codes 29827 (arthroscopic rotator cuff repair [RCR]) and either 23430 (tenodesis of long tendon of biceps) or 29828 (arthroscopic BT) were selected. Cases that included both 23430 and 29828 were excluded, as were those missing demographic data. Generalized linear models were used to model costs bas

Hip capsular reconstruction is an emerging surgical option for treating irreparable capsular deficiency in the setting of hip microinstability. While prevention through meticulous capsular preservation and repair remains paramount, reconstruction offers a viable solution in revision cases or after aggressive capsulectomy. Multiple graft options, including iliotibial band, dermal allograft, and Achilles tendon, have demonstrated biomechanical restoration of stability, though optimal choice and long-term efficacy remain under investigation. Careful patient selection, adherence to surgical princi

Acute ankle sprains are the most common lower limb injury seen in sports and recreational activities. They typically occur in younger population groups with an estimated 2 million acute ankle sprains being diagnosed each year. Inversion ankle sprains can lead to chronic instability, which often necessitates surgical intervention. The standard operative treatment of lateral ankle stabilization has been the Brostrom-Gould procedure, which has produced good results. This article details the surgical technique, advantages, and outcomes of an arthroscopic approach to surgical management of lateral

Inflammation and hypertrophy of the ankle joint's synovial lining can occur due to various causes. Chronic pain and degenerative changes may be due to synovitis causing clinical manifestations through traction on the joint capsule. The failure of conservative treatment for at least six months indicates arthroscopic debridement, which can provide significant pain relief without the morbidity of extensive surgical exposures. This study was therefore conducted to establish the functional results of arthroscopic debridement of the ankle joint in synovitis. Fifteen patients with chronic ankle pain

Ankle joint sepsis is a relatively rare but potentially devastating pathologic process of the lower extremity that requires expeditious identification and management. Establishing the diagnosis of ankle joint sepsis is often challenging as it may present with concomitant pathologies and often lacks consistency in regard to classic clinical characteristics. Once a diagnosis has been established, prompt management is imperative to minimize the potential for long-term sequelae. The purpose of this chapter is to address the diagnosis and management of the septic ankle with a focus on arthroscopic
