Brain Cortex Activity in Children With Anterior Open Bite, Speech and Swallowing Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Anterior open bite (AOB) affects 16.5% of children aged 2-16 years, significantly impacting dental occlusion and oral function. Among various contributing factors, improper tongue posture has been implicated. This study aims to assess neuronal cortical activation differences in children with AOB compared to those without, focusing on rest, speech and swallowing disorders. OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of articulation disorders, swallowing occurrences, tongue rate of motion ratio, and brain activation patterns at rest and during deglutition and phonation in children with and

A minimal-world-pair model for teaching the linguistic significance of distinctive feature properties.

A word level behavioral routine for the remediation of distinctive feature errors was developed for resolving some current theoretical criticisms of minimal-pair therapy. Seven children with moderate to severe non-organic phonological disabilities were taught to correctly discriminate and produce sounds in words by utilizing lexical contrasts. A one-group pretest-posttest design was utilized to establish that the number and severity of the sound substitutions decreased with training. Phonemic improvement was demonstrated with as few as three minimal-pair-words. A paradigm is proffered for futu

Articulatory function and tongue mobility after surgery followed by radiotherapy for tongue and floor of the mouth cancer patients.

The aim of this study was to determine which of the following factors--size of the post-excisional defect, site of the defect and type of reconstruction--influence tongue mobility and articulation disorders after treatment for cancer of the tongue and floor of the mouth. A total of 60 patients, who had been evaluated at least 6 months after surgery followed by radiotherapy (60 Gy in 30 fractions), were evaluated. According to the size of the post-excisional defect patients were divided into two groups: (1) defect less than 5 cm (35); (2) defect more than 5 cm (25). Based on the localisation of

Design and Evaluation of Korean Electropalatography (K-EPG).

Recently, the development of medical rehabilitation technology has resulted in an increased interest in speech therapy equipment. In particular, research on articulation therapy for communication disorders is being actively conducted. The existing methods for the diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders, such as traditional tactile perception tests and methods based on the empirical judgment of speech therapists, have many limitations. Moreover, the position and contact force of the tongue are key factors in speech disorders with regards to articulation. This is a very important factor in t

[Development of speech disorders in children].

The function of the formation of speech skills is decisive in the development of a child in communication and assimilation of information. Early pediatric diagnosis should become a routine practice of monitoring children from infancy to school age for the timely correction of speech disorders and associated dysgraphia and dyslexia. According to the ICD-10 classification, speech developmental disorders are divided into the following options: articulation impairment, delay in expressive and impressive speech. Articulation disorders, stuttering, impaired expressive speech are the most common and

Changes of some functional speech disorders after surgical correction of skeletal anterior open bite.

Skeletal anterior open bite (AOB) or apertognathism is characterized by the absence of contact of the anterior teeth and affects articulation parameters, chewing, biting and voice quality. The treatment of AOB consists of orthognatic surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of treatment on voice quality, articulation and nasality in speech with respect to skeletal changes. The study was prospective; 15 patients with AOB were evaluated before and after surgery. Lateral cephalometric x-ray parameters (facial angle, interincisal distance, Wits appraisal) were measure

The effects of minimal pairs treatment on the speech-sound production of two children with phonologic disorders.

Two children whose speech-sound production could be described by phonologic processes were administered a linguistically based treatment program that utilized minimal pair words. A subset of phonemes affected by a target phonologic process was taught consecutively. Spontaneous picture-naming probes were administered periodically to measure speech-sound production for all phonemes affected by the targeted phonologic process and several control phonologic processes. For both subjects, motoric components (i.e., models and phonetic placement cues) had to be added to the minimal pairs treatment. Wi

Speech appliances in the treatment of phonological disorders.

Some individuals are unable to achieve correct production of the /r/ phoneme after receiving substantial amounts of treatment. Clark, Schwarz, and Blakeley (1993) developed a removable speech appliance that positions the tongue to produce the /r/ phoneme. Their results indicate that the appliance was successful with a large group of clients. The rationale and issues related to the use of speech appliances are discussed.

Five subtypes of developmental phonological disorders.

Evidence for subgroups among developmental phonological disorders based on etiological origins, as opposed to the alternative linguistic view of childhood phonological disorders as a learning problem of unknown origin, is presented. A three-parameter framework that arranges relevant individual differences (mechanism, cognitive-linguistic, and psychosocial) is proposed for study and classification of the phonological disorders. The disorders are studied in relation to developmental correlates and speech-sound normalization. This permits study of these variables in relation to severity and forms

Hybridization of Acoustic and Visual Features of Polish Sibilants Produced by Children for Computer Speech Diagnosis.

Speech disorders are significant barriers to the balanced development of a child. Many children in Poland are affected by lisps (sigmatism)-the incorrect articulation of sibilants. Since speech therapy diagnostics is complex and multifaceted, developing computer-assisted methods is crucial. This paper presents the results of assessing the usefulness of hybrid feature vectors extracted based on multimodal (video and audio) data for the place of articulation assessment in sibilants /s/ and /ʂ/. We used acoustic features and, new in this field, visual parameters describing selected articulators'

Myofunctional therapy in patients with orofacial dysfunctions affecting speech.

Tongue thrusting, deviate swallowing, mouth breathing, orofacial muscle imbalance, deviate mandibular movement and malocclusion are the most important orofacial dysfunctions underlying disorders of articulation. Their development is linked to early bottle feeding and sucking habits. The phoniatrician is charged with the early detection of orofacial dysfunctions affecting speech. Early correction of habits and retraining by speech therapy are important preventive measures. Case histories, phoniatric and myofunctional diagnoses and dental/orthodontic findings were compiled for a total of 103 pat
