Dermoscopic dark corner artifacts removal: Friend or foe?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: One of the more significant obstacles in classification of skin cancer is the presence of artifacts. This paper investigates the effect of dark corner artifacts, which result from the use of dermoscopes, on the performance of a deep learning binary classification task. Previous research attempted to remove and inpaint dark corner artifacts, with the intention of creating an ideal condition for models. However, such research has been shown to be inconclusive due to a lack of available datasets with corresponding labels for dark corner artifact cases. METHODS: To addr

Artifacts and Anatomic Variations in Optical Coherence Tomography.

In recent years, ophthalmologists widely depend on optical coherence tomography (OCT), which is an objective, reliable, and repeatable structural test for both early diagnosis of glaucoma and detecting progression of the disease. Using this technology, it is now possible to take measures of various anatomic structures and layers of the optic nerve head, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, and macular area. Although OCT has these powerful capabilities in general, anatomical variations, artifacts related to the ocular pathologies, and issues with image acquisition can be present in up to on

Frequent hitters: nuisance artifacts in high-throughput screening.

One of the major challenges in early drug discovery is the recognition of frequent hitters (FHs), that is, compounds that nonspecifically bind to a range of macromolecular targets or false positives caused by various types of assay interferences. In this review, we survey the mechanisms underlying different types of FHs, including aggregators, spectroscopic interference compounds (i.e., luciferase inhibitors and fluorescent compounds), chemical reactive compounds, and promiscuous compounds. We also review commonly used experimental detection techniques and computational prediction models for F

Three-dimensional Automated Breast US: Facts and Artifacts.

As automated breast (AB) US becomes more integrated into the daily practice of breast imaging, the need to address the artifacts that interfere with AB US image interpretation is becoming more important. Learning methods to detect and subsequently resolve artifacts such as shadowing can enhance the reader's confidence and ability to differentiate artifacts and true abnormalities. Understanding the basic principles of AB US and its image acquisition process are key elements in resolving artifacts. Gaining familiarity with the common patterns of AB US artifacts and placing them into categories o

Digital breast tomosynthesis: Image acquisition principles and artifacts.

Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is a new technology that is being used more frequently for both breast cancer screening and diagnostic purposes and its utilization is likely to continue to increase over time. The major benefit of tomosynthesis over 2D-mammography is that it allows radiologists to view breast tissue using a three-dimensional dataset and improves diagnostic accuracy by facilitating differentiation of potentially malignant lesions from overlap of normal tissue. In addition, image processing techniques allow reconstruction of two dimensional synthesized mammograms (SM) from DBT

Reducing bladder artifacts in clinical pelvic SPECT images.

UNLABELLED: SPECT imaging of the pelvis is hampered by the presence of bladder artifacts, which render up to 20% of the images unreadable. The artifacts are caused by the high level of activity in the bladder and by the change in activity level as the bladder fills during data acquisition. The changing activity, together with the inhomogeneous attenuation of the pelvis, leads to inconsistencies in the projections and consequently artifacts when the data are reconstructed with filtered backprojection (FBP). dSPECT is an iterative algorithm that permits the reconstruction of dynamic SPECT images

Ultrasound artifacts affecting the diagnosis of breast masses.

An investigation of the outcome of over 1600 breast ultrasound examinations revealed a number of scanning artifacts. Artifactual echoes in cysts resulted from inappropriate scanning factors, including focal zone placement, gain, TGC, and gray scale, and from partial volume effect. The absence of a sign suspicious for carcinoma, posterior shadowing to a solid mass, resulted from faulty focal zone placement, or from the mass resting on chest wall tissue. Pathology was sometimes simulated by postsurgical scars, ducts, and benign calcifications. Corrective procedures to alleviate the various scann

Artifacts and pitfalls of high-resolution CT scans.

Artifacts on CT images have been observed since the introduction of CT scanners. Some artifacts have been corrected with the improvement of technology and better understanding of the image formation and reconstruction algorithms. Some artifacts, however, are still observable in state-of-the-art high-resolution scans. Many investigations on CT artifacts have been reported. Some artifacts are obvious and some are similar to patterns commonly associated with pathological conditions. The present report summarizes some of the causes of artifacts and presents some artifacts that mimic pathology on c

Morphological artifacts in pulmonary pathology and literature review.

In pathology practice, understanding pre-analytical and analytical variables is fundamental for an accurate interpretation of the microscopic morphology of each organ. The lung is susceptible to several artifacts, which can alter the final microscopic appearance of the specimen, including (i) morphological changes ex vivo compared to the in vivo state, (ii) effects of presurgical and surgical procedures, and (iii) pre-analytical and analytical variables. In this article, the main iatrogenic artifacts described in pulmonary pathology are summarized, as well as the effects of previous biopsies,

EEG is better when cleaning effectively targets artifacts.

OBJECTIVE: Electroencephalography (EEG) data are contaminated by a range of non-neural artifacts. The confounding influence of artifacts is often addressed by using independent component analysis (ICA) to decompose data into components, subtracting artifactual components, then reconstructing data into the electrode space. Due to imperfect component separation, this common approach can remove neural signals as well as artifacts. Here, we demonstrate the counterintuitive finding that this can artificially inflate event-related potential and connectivity effect sizes and bias source localisation

Lung Ultrasound and Pleural Artifacts: A Pictorial Review.

Lung ultrasound is a well-established diagnostic approach used in detecting pathological changes near the pleura of the lung. At the acoustic boundary of the lung surface, it is necessary to differentiate between the primary visualization of pleural parenchymal pathologies and the appearance of secondary artifacts when sound waves enter the lung or are reflected at the visceral pleura. The aims of this pictorial essay are to demonstrate the sonographic patterns of various pleural interface artifacts and to illustrate the limitations and pitfalls of the use of ultrasound findings in diagnosing

Pseudocalcifications: Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation of Postsurgical Gauze Artifacts.

Artifacts and foreign bodies can mimic microcalcifications. We report a series of 17 postsurgical women in whom mammograms showed fine linear radiodensities at the surgical bed. Vacuum-assisted biopsy histopathology of one of the lesions showed foreign bodies of different sizes with macrophage reaction. After discussion with the surgeons, we ascertained that a particular type of gauze was used that had fragmented, and we reproduced the mammographic appearance in a chicken breast. Furthermore, we showed the same pathology was reproduced in mice implanted with the gauze threads. It is important

Ant bite artifacts in a case of hanging.

Artifacts produced by postmortem animal scavenging are commonly encountered at autopsy. Knowledge of the pattern of artifacts produced by postmortem animal scavenging is essential for the correct interpretation of the autopsy finding. In household deaths, such artifacts are usually caused by domestic animals and by small insects such as flies, ants, beetles, etc. Ants are one of the early scavengers which feed on the dead bodies. The artifacts produced by the postmortem ant activity are usually superficial and non-bleeding type. Rarely, in the congested body regions and areas of marked hyposta

Air and its Sonographic Appearance: Understanding the Artifacts.

BACKGROUND: Although air has traditionally been considered a barrier to sonographic imaging, when encountered in unusual settings it can serve as an important indicator of various pathologic states as well. Clinician recognition and thorough understanding of the characteristic pattern of artifacts generated by air are critical for making a number of important diagnoses. CASE SERIES: We present five emergency department cases in which air was visualized in a pathologic location. Pneumothorax, pneumoperitoneum, necrotizing fasciitis, or Fournier's gangrene, and subcutaneous emphysema and pneumo

Eliminating pulse-induced artifacts in Urethral Pressure data.

Urethral Pressure Profilometry (UPP) is a tool in the diagnosis of urinary incontinence. The pressure profile along the urethra is measured by a special catheter in order to assess the contraction strength of the sphincter muscle. The use of microtip catheters with several pressure sensors and an integrated acceleration sensor enables signal reconstruction of the pressure distribution on the urethra's inside. Experimental data from minipigs exhibit artifact patterns in the pressure data. It is shown that these artifacts are caused by vascular pulsation in the sphincter structure. We therefore

Color Doppler twinkling artifacts in small-bowel bezoars.

Small-bowel bezoars usually form in the stomach and may subsequently cause small-bowel obstruction. Bezoars associated with small-bowel obstruction have been accurately diagnosed by computed tomography, although some case reports have described the specific sonographic findings of small-bowel bezoars. Bezoars can be overlooked by sonographic examination if a dilated small-bowel loop contains a large amount of air. Twinkling artifacts on color Doppler images appear as rapidly fluctuating red and blue signals behind certain strongly reflecting structures. In this series, we hypothesize that twin

[Laboratory diagnosis of pseudoparasites, artifacts and parasitic delusions].

Common practice in a diagnostic parasitology laboratory involves distinguishing parasitic organisms from various artifacts. Artifacts mean pseudoparasites, supposed parasites and parasitic delusions. Pseudoparasites include undigested leftovers or coincidentally or purposely ingested nonparasitic organisms or their parts. Supposed parasites are wild organisms which were incorrectly identified as the components of faeces. In parasitic delusions, it is impossible to find any kind of parasites while patients describe imaginary parasites in detail. All the above categories of nonparasitic findings
