Noninvasive Detection of Arytenoid Cartilage Calcification Using Computed Tomography and Prediction of Prognosis in Laryngeal Contact Granuloma.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal contact granuloma (LCG) is a relatively uncommon disease with chronic inflammatory stimulation, and long-term reflux irritation is a vital factor for arytenoid cartilage calcification. Our investigation compared the severity of ipsilateral arytenoid cartilage calcification with the frequency of recurrence of LCG after surgical treatment. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of prospectively gathered data over five years from 327 patients, including 153 subjects without laryngeal lesions, were age- and sex-matched normal controls, 103 patients with various other vocal cor

Histological and mechanical comparisons of arytenoid cartilage between 4 brachycephalic and 8 non-brachycephalic dogs: A pilot study.

Brachycephalic airway syndrome (BAS) is a well-established cause of respiratory distress in dogs. BAS without surgical correction results in eventual laryngeal collapse. Arytenoid lateralization has been used to treat severe laryngeal collapse with some highly variable results. Chondromalacia and decreased stiffness of the arytenoid cartilage has been postulated a source of failure after arytenoid lateralization but no report of the histological characteristics and mechanical strength of arytenoid cartilage in brachycephalic dogs has been reported. Here we report histological and mechanical fe

Detection of passive movement of the arytenoid cartilage in unilateral vocal-fold paralysis by laryngoscopic observation: useful diagnostic findings.

In a previous study of patients with unilateral vocal-fold paralysis (UVFP), three-dimensional computed tomography (3DCT) revealed passive movement during phonation, with the arytenoid cartilage on the paralyzed side pushed to the unaffected side and deviated upwards. The present work compares the 3DCT findings with those obtained by 2-dimensional endoscopy to visualize the vertical passive movement of the arytenoid cartilage. The study population consisted of 23 patients with UVFP and two with laryngeal deviation but normal movement of the vocal folds. Two endoscopic findings represented cran

The reliability of endoscopic examination in assessment of arytenoid cartilage movement in horses. Part I: Subjective and objective laryngeal evaluation.

Videorecordings of the laryngeal activity of 108 unsedated horses were obtained at rest by passing a flexible videoendoscope into the nasopharynx through the right ventral meatus. All videotaped images were reviewed once, and 72 were reviewed twice, by three veterinarians. Laryngeal cartilage movement was assessed subjectively with a five-tier grading system. The mean intraobserver agreement was 83.3% (range, 75.0%-90.2%) with a kappa statistic of .65 to .98. The mean interobserver agreement was 79.0% (range, 70.4%-80.6%) with a kappa statistic of .51 to .90. A computer program was developed t

[Histological findings of 15 excised arytenoid cartilages after long-lasting recurrent nerve paralysis (author's transl)].

Histological findings of 15 excised arytenoid cartilages are reported. In all cases there was a long-term recurrent nerve paralysis without additional inflammatory disease. In one of the cases there was fibrosed ankylosis of the cricoarytenoid joint. This is the first report made on the histological findings of the arytenoid cartilage in cases of paralysis. It is confirmed that there is a difference in the joint pathology in cases of immobility due to inflammatory conditions and pure non inflammatory recurrent paralysis. The fixation caused by arthritis of the joint has relatively poor prognos

Diagnosis of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis following esophagectomy by evaluating movement of the vocal cords and arytenoid cartilages using ultrasonography.

Advancements in thoracoscopic surgery have provided us with a deeper anatomical understanding of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (RLNP), which is likely to occur after lymph node dissection. Taking a novel approach to researching the diagnosis of RLNP, we evaluated movement of the vocal cords and arytenoid cartilages using ultrasonography in patients who underwent thoracoscopic esophagectomy. RLNP occurred in six of the 24 patient cohort. The rate of hoarseness and difficulty in discharging sputum was significantly higher in the paralyzed group than in the non-paralyzed group. The diagnost

Biomechanical evaluation of modified laryngoplasty by use of a toggle technique for stabilization of arytenoid cartilage in specimens obtained from equine cadavers.

OBJECTIVE To biomechanically compare modified and standard laryngoplasty constructs in monotonic load to failure and cyclic loading. SAMPLES 41 equine cadaveric larynges. PROCEDURES Laryngoplasty constructs were created by use of a standard technique on one side and a modified technique (with a toggle to anchor suture to the arytenoid cartilage) on the other side. For monotonic loading, laryngoplasty constructs were prepared and suture ends attached to a load frame; constructs then were loaded until mechanical failure. Mean load at failure and failure modes were compared between constructs. Fo

TNM glottic: role of the vocal muscle, arytenoid cartilage, and inferior paraglottic space in impaired vocal cord mobility (T2). An embryological and clinical study.

The TNM classification is unsatisfactory regarding the impaired mobility of the vocal cord and/or the arytenoid. The authors have studied the intrinsic laryngeal musculature, with particular attention to the medial thyroarytenoid muscle, the lateral thyroarytenoid muscle, and the inferior paraglottic space. The study was conducted on serial sections of 4 embryonal and 9 fetal larynges at different stages of development. The embryological observations showed that the lateral and medial thyroarytenoid muscles have different maturation times and probably different functions: phonatory and sphinct

Airway stenosis following immediate bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve reconstruction: report of two cases successfully treated with laser submucosal intermediate transverse resection of the arytenoid cartilage.

BACKGROUND: While the usefulness of immediate intraoperative reconstruction of the unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) has been reported, there are few reports of bilateral reconstruction. Furthermore, detailed evaluation of laryngeal function before and after surgical treatment for airway compromise caused by bilateral RLN paralysis remains limited. This report aimed to highlight a preventable complication of immediate bilateral RLN reconstruction and a salvage treatment option. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report two women who underwent immediate bilateral RLN reconstruction during surgery f

Clinical and Pathological Features in Horses With Advanced Arytenoid Chondritis.

Equine arytenoid chondritis causes airway obstruction and abnormal upper airway noise due to a space-occupying lesion(s) and decreased abduction. Our objective was to compare clinical scores and ultrasonographic findings with gross and microscopic lesions of naturally occurring arytenoid chondritis, in order to guide surgical treatment. Seventeen naturally affected horses with advanced/severe chronic arytenoid chondritis and 4 control arytenoid cartilages were evaluated after partial arytenoidectomy. Cartilages were sectioned caudal to the corniculate process and the body of each arytenoid was
