Ten patients are described in whom a localized reaction in the visceral pleura developed comparatively rapidly, involving parts of the underlying lung parenchyma, forming an atelectatic pseudotumour. The lesions were mistaken for pulmonary malignancy, leading to thoracotomy in 5 patients. It is suggested that these lesions can occur many years after exposure to asbestos and that they are sequelae of benign pleurisy. Computer tomography is of great value in these cases and may obviate thoracotomy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Exposure to asbestos can cause both benign and malignant, pulmonary and pleural diseases. In the current era of low asbestos exposure, it is critical to be aware of complications from asbestos exposure; as they often arise after decades of exposure, asbestos-related pulmonary complications include asbestosis, pleural plaques, diffuse pleural thickening, benign asbestos-related pleural effusions and malignant pleural mesothelioma.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple recent studies are featured in this review, including a study evaluating imaging characteristics of asbestos with other

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Asbestos exposure is the cause of significant pleural disease - both benign and malignant. Although there is increased awareness, individuals continue to be exposed, and we will continue to see its sequelae for years to come because of the delay between exposure and disease manifestation. Asbestos-related pleural disease includes pleural plaques, diffuse pleural thickening, benign asbestos-related pleural effusions (BAPEs), and malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).
RECENT FINDINGS: Several recent studies are highlighted throughout this review, including a comparative analys

Lung cancer is the leading cause of tumour death and a large percentage of it is associated with tobacco smoking. Epidemiology has shown that asbestos cumulative exposures increase the risk of lung cancer to a variable extent, depending on the manufacturing process and the specific job. The risk appears relatively small (< or = 2) and is detectable after massive exposures only. Clinical diagnosis of asbestos-related lung cancer is based upon medical history (exposures > 25 ff.ml years double the risk), possible lung fibrosis and counts of asbestos bodies and fibers in bronchoalveolar lavage an

The inhalation of asbestos fibers may lead to a number of respiratory diseases, including lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural plaques, benign pleural effusion, and malignant mesothelioma. Although exposure is now regulated, patients continue to present with these diseases because of the long latent period between exposure and clinical disease. Presenting signs and symptoms tend to be nonspecific; thus, the occupational history helps guide clinical suspicion. High-risk populations include persons in construction trades, boilermakers, shipyard workers, railroad workers, and U.S. Navy veterans. Ever

Non malignant asbestos diseases are dominated numerically by pleural plaques. This form of circumscribed fibrosis of the parietal pleural is generally asymptomatic and its potential for evolution is weak. More rarely diffuse pleural fibrosis results from disease of the visceral pleura with a secondary fusion of the two pleural layers. Usually it follows a pleural effusion which resolves spontaneously. Its functional effects are sometimes important. The generalised practice of computerized tomographic scanning as a work up for asbestos related disease has revealed the frequent association of th

Asbestos-induced pleural disease has become the most common manifestation of asbestos exposure. Asbestos has an unusual affinity for the pleural space and leads to plaques, benign effusions, fibrosis, and malignant mesothelioma. The explanation for its affinity for the pleura may lie in part with new evidence showing that asbestos fibers can accumulate in certain regions of the parietal pleura at higher concentrations than in the lung. With the control of industrial exposures to asbestos, the incidence of this disease should decrease, with the incidence of mesothelioma peaking in the years 200

Asbestos fibres have potent cancerogenic and fibrogenic properties and may lead to development of cancer and fibrosis in the lung parenchyma and pleura. The Danish Ministry of Employment has established rules which should prevent development of disease when working with asbestos in future but, on account of the very long latent period between exposure and development of asbestos-related disease, these conditions will still occur during the next 30-40 years. Primarily, the more benign pleural plaques will be concerned but serious disease such as bronchial carcinoma and pleural mesothelioma will

A case of pleural plaques due to asbestos exposure in a 55-year-old man after 30 years of "sporadic" activity in a chemical plant brings out the following: 1. the need for careful investigation of the patient's occupational history, both past and present; 2. the latency of the disease and the long-term action of micropollution; 3. the wide distribution of asbestos industry ("urban hazard"); 4. if the use of asbestos is to continue, the urgency of more effective regulations to facilitate primary prevention; 5. the usefulness of special radiology for diagnosis (45 degrees X-ray, ultrasonography,

The study hypothesis was that asbestos exposure and asbestos-related pleural plaques and interstitial disease are associated with (1) immune imbalances favoring helper-inducer T-cell subsets in blood and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and (2) T-lymphocyte accumulation in BAL. One hundred twenty-two asbestos-exposed subsets (AES), including 27 nonsmokers (NS), were evaluated and compared with 10 unexposed normal subjects. Data were collected on medical, smoking, and occupational histories, physical examination, spirometry, lung volumes, single-breath DLCO, chest films read by a "B" reader, and T-

BACKGROUND: The time between initial asbestos exposure and asbestos-related disease can span several decades. The Asbestos Surveillance Program aims to detect early asbestos-related diseases in a cohort of 8,565 power industry workers formerly exposed to asbestos.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How does asbestos exposure patterns affect cancer mortality and the duration of latency until death?
METHODS: A mortality follow-up was conducted with available vital status for 8,476 participants (99 %) and available death certificates for 89.9 % of deceased participants. Standardised mortality ratios (SMR) were

Although some countries have reduced asbestos consumption and instituted bans, other countries continue to produce and consume asbestos even as asbestos-related deaths mount and the associated societal costs are high. Asbestos production and consumption has declined globally; the number of bans has increased; and the speed at which countries have tapered off consumption has increased. Using country-level data, we study the economic impact of historical changes in the production and use of asbestos. We compare changes in gross domestic product (GDP) following the enactment of asbestos bans. We

Asbestos comprises a group of fibrous minerals that are naturally occurring in the environment. Because of its natural properties, asbestos gained popularity for commercial applications in the late 19th century and was used throughout the majority of the 20th century, with predominant use in the construction, automotive, and shipbuilding industries. Asbestos has been linked to a spectrum of pulmonary diseases, such as pleural fibrosis and plaques, asbestosis, benign asbestos pleural effusion, small cell lung carcinoma, non-small cell lung carcinoma, and malignant mesothelioma. There are severa

In Japan, chrysotile is still permitted to use under the Ordinance on Prevention of Hazards due to Specified Chemical Substances. In recent years many countries have introduced a policy of prohibiting the use of asbestos, based on clinical and epidemiological studies. In light of this, it is important to evaluate the airborne asbestos concentrations in workplaces and also estimate the number of related disease cases in order to discuss the ban of asbestos use. The survey covered 528 workplaces in 145 plants and included 2795 asbestos handling workers from 1985 to 1998. These plants were belong

Worldwide, 230,000+ people die annually from asbestos-related diseases (ARDs). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries develop a National Asbestos Profile (NAP) to eliminate ARDs. For 195 countries, we assessed the global status of NAPs (A: bona fide NAP, B: proxy NAP, C: relevant published information, D: no relevant information) by national income (HI: high, UMI: upper-middle, LMI: lower-middle, LI: low), asbestos bans (banned, no-ban) and public data availability. Fourteen (7% of 195) countries were category A (having a bona fide NAP), while 98, 51 and 32 countries wer

Prevalence of disease related to previous exposure to asbestos was investigated in a cohort of 394 men who had worked for more than a year at a magnesium plant before 1970. Radiography showed lung fibrosis in nine men (2.3%) and pleural plaques in 40 men (9.5%). Prevalence rates varied considerably between sub-groups subjected to different modes of exposure. For the whole cohort there was a positive correlation between prevalence rate of radiographic changes and duration of work entailing exposure to asbestos. Subjects with pleural changes had more dyspnoea than found in an external reference

Diseases associated with asbestos exposure include asbestosis, malignant mesothelioma, carcinoma of the lung, and parietal pleural plaques. In this study the asbestos content of lung tissue was examined in groups of cases representing each of these diseases and in several cases with non-occupational idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Asbestos bodies (AB), which are the hallmark of asbestos exposure, were present in the lungs of virtually everyone in the general population and present at increased levels in individuals with asbestos associated diseases. The highest numbers of AB occurred in individ
