Interobserver variations in diagnosing asbestosis according to the ILO classification.

Inhalation of asbestos fibres leads to asbestosis of the pleura and the lung, with possible progression to lung cancer and malignant pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma. Asbestosis remains difficult to diagnose, especially in its early stages. The most important role in its diagnosis is that of chest radiographs. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to address interobserver variations in interpreting chest radiographs in asbestos workers, which remain to be an issue, despite improvements in the International Labour Office (ILO) classification system. In our ten-year study, we investigated

Asbestosis in an asbestos composite mill at Mumbai: a prevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Of an estimated 100,000 workers exposed to asbestos in India, less than 30 have been compensated. The reasons for such a small number are: refusal by management sponsored studies to grant medical certifications to workers suffering from occupational diseases, lack of training for doctors in diagnosis of occupational lung diseases, deliberate misdiagnosis by doctors of asbestosis as either chronic bronchitis or tuberculosis and the inherent class bias of middle class doctors against workers. The aim of the study was to identify workers suffering from Asbestosis (parenchymal and pleu

Cohort mortality study of women compensated for asbestosis in Italy.

BACKGROUND: The carcinogenic effect of asbestos is accepted for lung cancer and mesothelioma, while conflicting opinions exist for other cancer sites. The aim of the present investigation is to study cause-specific mortality of women compensated for asbestosis who had certainly been exposed to high levels of asbestos fibers. METHODS: The cause-specific mortality of all Italian women compensated for asbestosis and alive December 31, 1979, was investigated through October 30, 1997. In the total cohort, which included 631 subjects, 277 deaths occurred. Cause-specific SMRs (Standardized Mortality

[Criteria for diagnosis of occupational asbestosis of the pulmonary parenchyma and pleura].

The criteria for acknowledgement of occupational parenchymal asbestosis were set out in the List of Occupational Diseases of 1983, under paragraph 26. In spite of this, some occupational health specialists and invalidity committees acknowledge the disease only when it meets the criteria recommended in the Conclusions of a Workshop on Asbestosis, held in former Yugoslavia, although such criteria were never legally implemented. According to these criteria asbetosis of the lung is recognized only when parenchymal profusion is subcategory profusion is subcategory 2/1 and higher, or at least subcat

High-resolution computed tomography in the early detection of asbestosis.

A group of 21 former asbestos sprayers was studied with high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and the findings were compared with radiographic, exposure and lung function variables. HRCT was superior to plain radiography in detecting parenchymal and pleural changes. It showed changes indicative of lung fibrosis, especially septal lines and parenchymal bands, in 9 of the 12 subjects (75%) with a plain radiographic category of 0/0 in the International Labour Office (ILO) 1980 classification of radiographs of pneumoconioses. The HRCT findings were classified according to a method developed

[A case of asbestosis complicated with double cancer of the stomach and colon].

A case of a double cancer, a stomach and a colon cancer, in a 84-year-old man is reported. The patient had an occupational history of asbestos exposure while working at two shipyards. His chest X-ray revealed typical, pleural plaque with calcification. Further, a significant number of asbestos bodies in his autopsied lung tissue was detected. In spite of failure to detect asbestos bodies in the stomach and the colon, our findings suggest that these two cancers may have been induced by asbestos exposure.

The pathogenesis of pleural plaques and pulmonary asbestosis: possibilities and impossibilities.

None of the various existing theories on the pathogenesis of pleura plaques (PP) is able to explain their peculiarities. Knowledge of physiology of the lung and pleura and in particular its lymphatic system as well as cellular activities when the cells are exposed to asbestos is necessary when discussing these problems. Short asbestos fibres when phagocytosed by macrophages will activate these cells to produce various substances, among them a factor that will stimulate fibroblasts to produce more collagen. Some of the small fibres will spread towards the visceral pleura of the lung, just like

Follow-up of asbestosis patients and predictors for radiographic progression.

OBJECTIVE: We followed a group of 85 Finnish asbestosis patients radiographically for an average of 6.5 (range 2-10) years to examine the progression of the disease and to assess possible explanations for the progression. METHODS: The examinations included full-size chest radiographs and a blood specimen analysis. The radiographs were classified according to the 1980 International Labor Office (ILO) classification. Progression was accepted if the second or third radiography was estimated (in a side-by-side comparison) to have more profusion of small opacities qualitatively than the first, eve

[Asbestosis in a truck driver: a clinical case and analysis of the exposure].

The paper reports a case of asbestosis in a truck driver whose anamnesis, at first, revealed no evidence of previous exposure to asbestos, whether occupational or extra occupational. A pleuro-pulmonary fibrosis was discovered in 1987, following an episode of exudative pleurisy on the right side. The thickened pleura was then surgically removed. In the samples of pleuro-pulmonary fibroid tissue taken during the operation, typical asbestos bodies were demonstrated in optical microscopy. The analysis of possible exposure to asbestos that might not have been referred in the anamnesis revealed that

[Asbestosis of the bladder neck and prostate. Reflections on 2 cases].

Ingested asbestos is mainly excreted in the urine. Marked impregnation of bladder neck in a patient working in an asbestos factory was diagnosed initially as a tuberculosis lesion on the granulomatous histologic appearance. Asbestos fibers were counted by electron microscopy. This appears to be the first case of this type reported and possible causal relations and histopathologic findings are discussed. Also reported is a patient with prostatic cancer, and chronic pulmonary asbestosis, treated by adenomectomy using an upper approach 15 years previously. The cancer was of the prostate transitio

Distribution of Asbestos Enterprises and Asbestosis Cases - China, 1997-2019.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ON THIS TOPIC?: Asbestos is classified as a Class I Carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) because exposure causes mesothelioma and lung cancer in addition to asbestosis and plaques. So far, asbestos has been banned in 67 countries, but chrysotile, a commonly encountered form of asbestos, is still widely used in China and most developing countries. Most asbestos-caused cancers are not reported, recorded, and compensated in many countries. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: Enterprises manufacturing asbestos products have been migrating from econ

Factors Affecting Asbestosis Mortality Among Asbestos-Cement Workers in Italy.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed with the aim of investigating the temporal patterns and determinants associated with mortality from asbestosis among 21 cohorts of Asbestos-Cement (AC) workers who were heavily exposed to asbestos fibres. METHODS: Mortality for asbestosis was analysed for a cohort of 13 076 Italian AC workers (18.1% women). Individual cumulative asbestos exposure index was calculated by factory and period of work weighting by the different composition of asbestos used (crocidolite, amosite, and chrysotile). Two different approaches to analysis, based on Standardized Mortal

Asbestos, asbestosis, and lung cancer: observations in Quebec chrysotile workers.

One prospective epidemiologic study of asbestos cement workers with radiological small opacities has been cited as a rationale for attributing excess lung cancer to asbestosis. This approach could have considerable practical value for disease attribution in an era of decreasing exposure. However, a recent International Agency for Research on Cancer review concludes that the mechanism of production of asbestos-related lung cancer are unknown. Asbestosis, therefore, cannot be a biologically effective dose marker of lung cancer susceptibility. Asbestosis nonetheless would be useful in identifying

A Case of Pulmonary Asbestosis Presenting with Polymyalgia Rheumatica: A Case Report.

An 83-year-old male patient with pulmonary asbestosis was admitted to our hospital with a subacute onset of arthromyalgia affecting the shoulder girdles. He had a history of moderate asbestos exposure in the earlier part of his occupation and was diagnosed with pulmonary asbestosis at 65 years of age. The patient exhibited recent-onset stiffness and myalgia of the shoulder and finger joints. Joint ultrasound findings showed bilateral long head biceps, resulting in a diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) according to the European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (E

The diagnosis of asbestosis in the 21st century: a clinicopathological correlation of 102 cases.

Asbestosis, defined as diffuse pulmonary fibrosis caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers, occurs after heavy exposures to asbestos dust over several decades. Because workplace exposures have been significantly curtailed since the banning of asbestos in insulation products, we were interested in examining the clinicopathological characteristics of cases diagnosed in the 21st century. The consultation files of one of the authors (VLR) were reviewed for cases of asbestosis diagnosed since 1/1/2001. 102 cases were identified, with a median age of 75 years (range: 45-89). There were 100 men and 2

Pathological confirmed diagnosis of asbestosis: the first case report in Thailand.

Asbestosis is an occupational lung disease defined as pulmonary fibrosis caused by asbestos. Asbestosis was previously reported in Thailand based on radiologic findings, which demonstrated interstitial lung with calcified pleural plaques, and the patient worked in a fiber cement factory. However there was some doubt about the diagnosis because clinical and radiological findings are nonspecific; there was no data support of asbestos exposure in the patient and no histologic confirmed diagnosis. Histologic diagnosis is most useful when an equivocal of ahistory of asbestos exposure in patients wi
