New species of Cucullanus (Nematoda: Cucullanidae), an intestinal parasite of the peacock bass Cichla piquiti (Perciformes: Cichlidae) from the Tocantins River, Brazil.

Cucullanus tucunarensis n. sp. (Cucullanidae) is described parasitizing the peacock bass Cichla piquiti (Cichlidae) from the Tocantins River, Tocantins State, Brazil. The new species is unique and differs from all its congeners by having a tail tip provided with several sclerotized spine-like processes on its ventral side, present in both the male and female. Furthermore, C. tucunarensis n. sp. is compared with other species of the genus recorded in the same zoogeographical region and in the same group of hosts (Perciformes).

Endoparasites in domestic animals surrounding an Atlantic Forest remnant, in São Paulo State, Brazil.

Morro do Diabo State Park (MDSP) is a significant remnant of the Atlantic Rain Forest in Brazil and is surrounded by rural properties. In that area, wild and domestic animals and humans are in close contact, which facilitates the two-way flow of infectious diseases among them. We assessed endoparasites in domestic livestock from all rural properties surrounding MDSP. There were sampled 197 cattle, 37 horses, 11 sheep, 25 swine, 21 dogs, one cat and 62 groups of chickens from 10 large private properties and 75 rural settlements. Eimeria spp. was present in almost all hosts, excepted in horses,

PCR detection of Heterakis gallinarum in environmental samples.

Heterakis gallinarum is a widely distributed cecal nematode that parasitizes gallinaceous birds including chickens and turkeys. H. gallinarum infection poses a problem for the poultry industry as the nematode egg serves as a vector for the protozoan parasite, Histomonas meleagridis, the causative agent of histomonosis. The only means of detecting H. gallinarum in the environment is microscopic identification of the eggs in soil or feces; however, H. gallinarum eggs are often mistaken for those of Ascaridia galli. Three primer sets were designed from sequences cloned from the H. gallinarum geno

Eosinophilic meningitis.

Eosinophilic meningitis is a rare clinical entity that can be useful in narrowing the differential diagnosis of central nervous system disease. It is defined by the presence of 10 or more eosinophils/microL in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or a CSF eosinophilia of at least 10%. The most common cause is invasion of the central nervous system by helminthic parasites, particularly Angiostrongylus cantonensis, but other infections as well as noninfectious conditions may also be associated. This review describes the etiologies of eosinophilic meningitis, focusing primarily on the helminths that cau

Zoonotic Parasites in Marmosets (Callithrix Spp.) From Southern Brazil: Insights From a One Health Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Currently, six species of Callithrix are frequently observed in anthropized and degraded environments in different regions of Brazil. This occupation favors interactions with humans and increases the risk of infection by parasites with zoonotic potential. This study assessed the occurrence of enteroparasites in free-ranging Callithrix spp. from different municipalities in Paraná state, Brazil, from a One Health approach. METHODS: Faecal samples of 37 specimens of C. penicillata, C. jacchus, and hybrid species were analyzed. RESULTS: The most frequent parasite forms observed inclu

Baylisascaris procyonis Roundworm in Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor), Mexico.

We found the zoonotic nematode, Baylisascaris procyonis, in a common raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Mexico. Expansion of raccoons into human-dominated regions might increase the risk of B. procyonis infections in humans. Increased surveillance and healthcare provider awareness of baylisascariasis in Mexico will be needed to prevent those infections in humans.

Baylisascaris procyonis on the rise in Europe: a comprehensive review and analysis of occurrence data.

The raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) was introduced to Europe by its final host, the North American raccoon (Procyon lotor), which has been spreading uncontrollably there since the early 20th century. The raccoon is gaining importance due to the spread of the raccoon roundworm, which is pathogenic to humans and can cause severe disease through oral ingestion of infectious egg stages. Totally, 146 raccoons from central and western Germany were examined for B. procyonis via necropsy. In addition, an extensive literature search was conducted on the occurrence of B. procyonis in Europe.

Spread of the Zoonotic Nematode Baylisascaris procyonis into a Naive Raccoon Population.

The raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis), a gastrointestinal nematode of the raccoon (Procyon lotor), may cause a severe form of larva migrans in humans, which can lead to death or permanent neurological damage. Although roundworms were inadvertently introduced to Europe alongside their raccoon hosts, the parasite is not present in every raccoon population. It is important to understand the geographic distribution of B. procyonis, as early and rapid treatment can prevent severe pathologies in humans. We present evidence for the roundworm spreading into a naive raccoon population through

HISTOPATHOLOGY OF GASTRIC WALL IN CHINESE ALLIGATOR ALLIGATOR SINENSIS INFECTED WITH ORTLEPPASCARIS SINENSIS (NEMATODA: ASCARIDOIDEA).

Crocodiles are susceptible to infection with a wide array of external and internal gastrointestinal helminths, yet little is known on the histopathology following infection or the effects of these parasites. The present study was aimed at evaluating the impact of infection by Ortleppascaris sinensis (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea) on the stomach of captive Alligator sinensis. The histological examination of the stomach revealed presence of superficial ulcer in mucous layer and granulomatous inflammation in submucous layer at entire gastric walls of the Alligator sinensis. Our findings also confirm th

Identification of parasite DNA in common bile duct stones by PCR and DNA sequencing.

We attempted to identify parasite DNA in the biliary stones of humans via PCR and DNA sequencing. Genomic DNA was isolated from each of 15 common bile duct (CBD) stones and 5 gallbladder (GB) stones. The patients who had the CBD stones suffered from cholangitis, and the patients with GB stones showed acute cholecystitis, respectively. The 28S and 18S rDNA genes were amplified successfully from 3 and/or 1 common bile duct stone samples, and then cloned and sequenced. The 28S and 18S rDNA sequences were highly conserved among isolates. Identity of the obtained 28S D1 rDNA with that of Clonorchis

Prevalence of parasite eggs (Strongyloides westeri, Parascaris equorum, and strongyles) and oocysts (Emeria leuckarti) in the feces of Thoroughbred foals on 14 farms in central Kentucky in 2003.

Prevalence of internal parasites was determined by fecal examination for eggs and oocysts in Thoroughbred foals in central Kentucky in 2003. Fecal samples were examined from 733 foals on 14 farms. This included 70 trips to the farms and a total of 2,346 fecal samplings. Monthly collection of fecal samples was begun for four farms in February, six in March, three in April, and one farm in May. Termination of the study for all farms was the end of July. A criterion was that the foals be at least 10 days old for initial samplings. If available, the same foals were sampled each time, in addition t
