Beyond the drug-terror nexus: drug trafficking and state-crime relations in Central Asia.

BACKGROUND: In the wake of collapse of the Soviet Union, Central Asia has transformed into a key hub along the Afghan opiates trafficking routes. Around 30 percent of the heroin manufactured in Afghanistan is estimated to be smuggled through Central Asian republics in its way to booming drug markets in Russia and Eastern Europe. METHODS: Building upon available evidence and extensive fieldwork research, the article seeks to confute mainstream analyses which emphasize connections between criminal and terrorist networks. The focus is on conducive factors for the establishment of drug routes in

Natural Vegetation Phenology in Central Asia: Satellite-Derived Trends and Nonlinear Dynamics via EEMD.

Understanding vegetation phenology is critical for assessing the impacts of climate change, particularly in regions vulnerable to environmental fluctuations. This study investigates the temporal trends and spatial variability of the start of photosynthetic activity (SOP) in natural vegetation across Central Asia over the past four decades (1982-2022) using satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data. The research emphasizes the critical role of vegetation phenology in understanding responses to climate change. To extract spring phenological data, various smoothing tech

A Bibliometric Analysis on Viral Central Nervous System Infection Research Productivity in Southeast Asia.

Research productivity on viral infections of the nervous system in Southeast Asia (SEA) is unknown. We aimed to determine the research productivity of SEA in terms of bibliometric indices and PlumX metrics and their correlation with socioeconomic factors. A comprehensive search of major electronic databases was done to identify studies on viral infections of the nervous system with at least one author from SEA. Socioeconomic factors and collaborations outside SEA were determined. Correlational analysis was done on bibliometric indices and socioeconomic factors. A total of 542 articles were ana

Bony labyrinth taxonomic identification and long-term evolution of livestock in the Southwest and Central Asia.

Southwest and Central Asia were pivotal regions for the domestication and dispersal of domestic herbivores. Here we investigate long-term variation in bony labyrinth morphology of domestic bovids (sheep, goats and cattle) across the last 10 000 years. We focused on the osseous cavity of the inner ear, located within the petrous bone. We analysed semicircular canal (SC) size and shape using micro-computed tomography and geometric morphometrics (GMM) on 78 modern reference specimens and 234 archaeological petrous bones from 51 sites spanning the Iranian Plateau, Central Asia, the Caucasus and th

Current and Future Distributions of Allium karataviense and A. turkestanicum in Central Asia Using MaxEnt Modeling.

The genus Allium L. represents one of the most diverse groups of monocotyledonous plants in Central Asia, a region recognized as a major center of its diversity. However, ongoing climate change poses a serious threat to the distribution and persistence of many wild species, including Allium. In this study, we applied Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) modeling to assess the current and future potential distributions of Allium karataviense Regel and A. turkestanicum Regel under three climate change scenarios (ssp126, ssp245, ssp585) and three time periods (2030s, 2070s, and 2090s). The models demonstrate

Gender-related factors associated with delayed diagnosis of tuberculosis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Tuberculosis (TB), a preventable and treatable disease, yearly affects millions of people and takes more than a million lives. Recognizing the symptoms and obtaining the correct diagnosis are vital steps towards treatment and cure. How timely a person with TB gets diagnosed may be influenced by biological differences between the sexes, and factors that are linked to the person's gender, in the context of the prevailing gender norms. According to our hypothesis, gender-related factors contribute to delays in the diagnosis of TB. We investigated four countries (Georgia, Kazakhstan, Republic of M

Recent declines in reported syphilis rates in eastern Europe and central Asia: are the epidemics over?

BACKGROUND: Since the early 1990s, major syphilis epidemics have occurred in the Newly Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union. The new and rapidly changing societal and economic conditions in these countries challenge their traditional approaches to the control of sexually transmitted infections (STI). Nevertheless, following a steady increase until 1997, reported syphilis incidence has declined during the past 3 years in most parts of the region. We examine these trends against a background of ongoing changes in service delivery, care seeking behaviour, and case finding practices

[The spread of Phlebotomus papatasi Scop., 1786 through the territory of Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan].

The data on distribution of the main vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) Phlebotomus papatasi through Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan are presented. The highest indices of density of this species (100 and more specimen per stick trap) were observed only in the Tejen oasis, rather high ones (1-10, 10-100) in the river valleys and at the foothill, and the lowest one (0.01-0.1)--over the desert territory where ZCL was not practically found. Using these data 2 maps were prepared. The first map shows the pattern of Ph. papatasi geographical distribution with the use of a relative

[First clinical application of autologous fibrin sealant Vivostat for neurosurgery in Kazakhstan and Central Asia].

BACKGROUND: Watertight dural closure and skull base reconstruction remain key challenges in neurosurgery. Autologous fibrin sealant Vivostat, produced from the patient's own blood, provides high biocompatibility, elasticity, and reliable adhesion. The absence of clinical data on its use in Central Asian countries highlights the relevance of the present study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of autologous fibrin sealant Vivostat for dural sealing and skull base reconstruction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective-prospective study included 110 patients operated on

Genetic diversity and dietary adaptations of the Central Plains Han Chinese population in East Asia.

The Central Plains Han Chinese (CPHC) is the typical agricultural population of East Asia. Investigating the genome of the CPHC is crucial to understanding the genetic structure and adaptation of the modern humans in East Asia. Here, we perform whole genome sequencing of 492 CPHC individuals and obtained 22.65 million SNPs, 4.26 million INDELs and 41,959 SVs. We found the CPHC has a higher level of genetic diversity and the glycolipid metabolic genes show strong selection signals, e.g. LONP2, FADS2, FGF21 and SLC19A2. Ancient DNA analyses suggest that the domestication of crops, which drove th

A Review of Anemia Prevalence, and Prevention and Control Strategies, in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Region.

Anemia is a global public health and nutrition problem. However, data on its prevalence and potential causal factors in the 22 countries of the UNICEF Europe and Central Asia region are not systematically collected, analyzed, and reported, leading to challenges in formulating appropriate preventative strategies. We examined available anemia prevalence data among different population groups through reviewing survey reports from 2010 to 2022; conducted a literature review to explore underlying determinants of anemia including iron deficiency; and collated and reviewed program and policy document

Genetic predisposition to celiac disease in Kazakhstan: Potential impact on the clinical practice in Central Asia.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD) is a systemic immune-mediated disorder developing in HLA genetically predisposed individuals carrying HLA-DQ2 and/or HLA-DQ8 molecules. Recent evidences supported a predominant importance of HLA-DQB1 locus and, in particular, HLA-DQB1*02 alleles. This diagnosis is poorly considered in Kazakhstan, because of the assumption that CD is not prevalent in this population. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that the genetic predisposition to CD in Kazakhstan is not negligible and is actually comparable to Western populations. METHODS: Through the analysis of HLA-DQ genotypes

Biosurveillance in Central Asia: Successes and Challenges of Tick-Borne Disease Research in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Central Asia is a vast geographic region that includes five former Soviet Union republics: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The region has a unique infectious disease burden, and a history that includes Silk Road trade routes and networks that were part of the anti-plague and biowarfare programs in the former Soviet Union. Post-Soviet Union biosurveillance research in this unique area of the world has met with several challenges, including lack of funding and resources to independently conduct hypothesis driven, peer-review quality research. Strides have been m

Dynamics of the plague-wildlife-human system in Central Asia are controlled by two epidemiological thresholds.

Plague (caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis) is a zoonotic reemerging infectious disease with reservoirs in rodent populations worldwide. Using one-half of a century of unique data (1949-1995) from Kazakhstan on plague dynamics, including data on the main rodent host reservoir (great gerbil), main vector (flea), human cases, and external (climate) conditions, we analyze the full ecoepidemiological (bubonic) plague system. We show that two epidemiological threshold quantities play key roles: one threshold relating to the dynamics in the host reservoir, and the second threshold relating to t
