Therapeutic exercises and rehabilitation in axial spondyloarthropathy: Balancing benefits with unique challenges in the Asia-Pacific countries.

The burden of axial spondyloarthropathy (axSpA) in the Asia-Pacific region is substantial. The management of axSpA has been revolutionized with the advent of biological therapy where the disease activity, functional disability and negative psychological affect can be mitigated to a great extent. On the other hand, exercise remains an essential component of the treatment of axSpA at all stages, which is often discounted or underused. This is compounded by a gap in demand and supply between increasing number patients with axSpA and paucity of trained specialists and rehabilitation personnel in t

The shift in Mosquito-borne diseases incidence across Asia-Pacific region (1992-2021): insights from an Age-Period-Cohort analysis using the global burden of disease study 2021.

PURPOSE: Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) pose a significant threat in the Asia-Pacific region, encompassing both the Western Pacific and South-East Asia. This study is aimed at improving the understanding of the evolution of incidence patterns of MBDs within the Asia-Pacific region and supporting the development of effective health policies. METHODS: Case numbers, incidence, and age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of MBDs were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021. Furthermore, an Age-Period-Cohort model was applied to characterize overall temporal trends in MBDs incidence a

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication--South-East Asia Region, 1998-1999.

In 1988, the World Health Assembly resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis by the end of 2000 (1). To achieve this goal, the 10 member countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia Region (SEAR) began implementing polio eradication strategies in 1994. In 1999, most polio cases worldwide were reported in SEAR (i.e., 48% of reported polio cases and 62% of cases with wild poliovirus isolation) (2,3). This report summarizes progress in achieving high routine and supplemental vaccination coverage, the surveillance of cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), and the impact of these act

Demyelinating diseases in Asia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review aims to discuss the recent advances in inflammatory demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system in Asia. RECENT FINDINGS: Prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Asia is lower than that in Western countries, although it has been increasing recently. Meanwhile, there seems to be no major difference in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) prevalence in various regions or ethnicities. Thus, the ratios of NMO/NMO spectrum disorder (NMOSD) to MS are higher in Asia as compared with Western countries, indicating that the differential diagnosis between NMO/NMOSD

Frequency of Human Brucellosis Complications in West Asia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a multi-systemic zoonotic infection. The West Asia/Middle East region is an important global hotspot for brucellosis. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to aggregate and synthesize all the available evidence regarding the complications of brucellosis in West Asia/Middle East region. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Proquest were searched. Selection of studies, data extraction, and the risk of bias assessment were performed in duplicate. Data extraction was performed for 254 complications. Meta-analysis was performed us

Similarities and Differences in Autoimmune Hepatitis Epidemiology between East and West: Autoimmune Hepatitis in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a relatively rare disease that can develop regardless of age or ethnicity. However, its clinical features differ between eastern and western populations due to several heterogeneous genetic and environmental factors. We herein report the clinical characteristics of AIH patients in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. SUMMARY AND KEY MESSAGES: The prevalence of AIH in eastern countries is considered to be lower than in western countries. Although a few young patients with type 2 AIH have been observed in South Asia, most patients in Asia are midd

Prevalence and proportion estimate of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection in Asia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Asymptomatic Plasmodium infection raises a problem for the persistent transmission of malaria in low-endemic areas such as Asia. This systematic review was undertaken to estimate the prevalence and proportion of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection in Asia. The systematic review was registered at PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022373664). The research followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. A comprehensive search of five databases, Ovid, Scopus, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Embase, was conducted to identify studies of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection in Asian countries. The

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication--South-East Asia, January 2000-June 2001.

Since the World Health Assembly resolved in 1988 to eradicate poliomyelitis globally, the estimated number of polio cases worldwide has declined 99%. During 1994, member countries of the South-East Asia Region (SEAR) of the World Health Organization (WHO) began accelerating efforts to eradicate polio. By 2000, wild poliovirus was detected in only four of the 10 countries: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Myanmar. This report summarizes polio eradication activities during January 2000-June 2001 in SEAR, where wild poliovirus transmission has declined rapidly and is occurring primarily in northern

Epidemiology of stroke and coronary artery disease in Asia.

Stroke and coronary artery disease (CAD) are major causes of death throughout the world. As half of the world's population lives in Asian countries, prevention of stroke and CAD in Asia is crucial. According to the vital statistics, East Asian countries have a lower mortality rate for CAD than for stroke. In contrast, CAD is a more common cause of death than stroke in other Asian countries and Western countries. Hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and smoking are major risk factors for stroke and CAD in Asia as well as in Western countries. In an observational study in Japan, the str

Burden of chronic kidney disease in the general population and high-risk groups in South Asia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an emerging public health issue globally. The prevalence estimates on CKD in South Asia are however limited. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of CKD among the general and high-risk population in South Asia. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-level prevalence studies in South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka). Three databases namely PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science were systematically searched for published reports of kidney disease in South Asia u

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in U.S. military personnel--Southwest/Central Asia, 2002-2003.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a vector-borne parasitic disease, is a risk for persons, including military personnel, who travel to or live in areas of the tropics, subtropics, and southern Europe where the disease is endemic. This report provides preliminary data about 22 cases of CL in military personnel deployed during 2002-2003 to three countries in Southwest/Central Asia (Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait). The patients were evaluated and treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) in the District of Columbia during August 2002-September 2003. U.S. health-care providers should consider
