The Aspergilli of section Usti (group ustus) are represented by over 20 species, of which Aspergillus calidoustus is the most relevant human pathogen. Invasive aspergillosis (IA) caused by these fungi is rare but could represent an emerging issue among the expanding population of patients with long-term immunosuppression receiving antifungal prophylaxis. Clinicians should be aware of this unusual type of IA, which often exhibits distinct clinical features, such as an insidious and prolonged course and a high occurrence of extra-pulmonary manifestations, such as skin/soft tissue or brain lesion

Abortion in dairy cattle may be caused by infectious (viruses, fungi and protozoa) and non-infectious causes mostly related to bad management practices and genetic factors. Recently, the significant contribution of mycotic infection to bovine abortion has been recognized. This report describes an abortion case in a Chianina cow due to Aspergillus nidulans, Aspergillus luchuensis and Lichtheimia sp. diagnosed by histology, cytology, culture and molecular assays. A mixed infection due to more than one fungus in abortion is rarely demonstrated. To our knowledge, this is the first case of bovine a

A comparison was made between Aspergillus fumigatus and A. umbrosus antigens regarding their usefulness in serological tests of farmer's lung. Mycelial and culture fluid antigens of both microbes were used to test sera of 30 Finnish farmer's lung patients for antibodies in the ELISA and in the gel precipitation (GP) test. Antibodies to A. umbrosus were more common than to A. fumigatus; this was especially evident in ELISA, ELISA gave more positive results with all four antigens than GP. Mycelial antigens showed more positive reactions in ELISA than the corresponding culture fluid antigens. The

INTRODUCTION: Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common airborne allergen of the Aspergillus family. However, allergies to Aspergillus spp. are increasing, and subsequently, allergies to Aspergillus species other than fumigatus are also on the rise. Commercial diagnostic tools are still limited to Aspergillus fumigatus. Hence, there is a need for improved tests. We decided to investigate the correlation between serological sensitization to A. fumigatus and other Aspergillus species.
METHODS: Hundred and seven patients with positive skin prick tests to A. fumigatus were included in this study.

Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus are important plant pathogens and causal agents of pre- and postharvest rots of corn, peanuts, and tree nuts. These fungal pathogens cause significant crop losses and produce aflatoxins, which contaminate many food products and contribute to liver cancer worldwide. Aqueous preparations of Tulbaghia violacea (wild garlic) were antifungal and at 10 mg/ml resulted in sustained growth inhibition of greater than 50% for both A. flavus and A. parasiticus. Light microscopy revealed that the plant extract inhibited conidial germination in a dose-dependent

BACKGROUND: Two serologic assays, Aspergillus latex agglutination testing (LA) and plasma (1-->3)-beta-D-glucan (BDG) measurement, are used when invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is suspected. Despite the high specificity of these assays, false-positive results are frequent for neutropenic patients. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of LA and BDG and to investigate the cause of the false-positive results.
METHODS: Eighty-eight consecutive patients with hematologic malignancies who underwent intensive chemotherapy were tested weekly with LA and BDG.
RESULTS: Sixteen of 88

INTRODUCTION: Aspergillosis is a serious infectious disease in avian species, including endangered birds. However, reports in such species remain scarce. This study focused on the Okinawa Rail (Hypotaenidia okinawae), an endangered flightless bird restricted to the northern forests of Okinawa Island, Japan.
METHODS: Air sac tissues and swabs from two deceased Okinawa Rails were cultured on potato dextrose agar. Identification of isolates was confirmed by ITS and benA sequencing. Antifungal susceptibility was tested using CLSI M38 broth microdilution. Aflatoxin production of isolates was asses

The in vitro susceptibility of 105 clinical and environmental strains of Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus to antifungal drugs, such as amphotericin B, azoles, and echinocandins was evaluated by the broth microdilution method proposed by the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). Following the EUCAST-proposed breakpoints, 20% and 25% of the clinical and environmental isolates of A. fumigatus, respectively, were found to be resistant to itraconazole (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration, MIC>2.0mg/L). Voriconazole showed good activity against A. fumigatus an

Fungi of the genus Aspergillus are widespread in the environment. Some Aspergillus species, most commonly Aspergillus fumigatus, may lead to a variety of allergic reactions and life-threatening systemic infections in humans. Invasive aspergillosis occurs primarily in patients with severe immunodeficiency, and has dramatically increased in recent years. There are several factors at play that contribute to aspergillosis, including both fungus and host-related factors such as strain virulence and host pulmonary structure/immune status, respectively. The environmental tenacity of Aspergilllus, its

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease in childhood. Aspergillus fumigatus sensitivity may be involved in the pathogenesis of asthma by leading to different clinical presentations.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the demographic, clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics of A. fumigatus sensitivity in childhood asthma and identify associated risk factors and diagnostic parameters.
METHODS: A total of 259 children with asthma were included in the study, 7 (2.7%) with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), 84 (32.4%) with A. fumigatus-sensitized asthm

Fungal sensitization is highly prevalent in severe asthma. The relationship between fungus and asthma, especially Aspergillus fumigatus, has been the subject of extensive research. The ubiquitous presence of A. fumigatus, its thermotolerant nature, the respirable size of its conidia, and its ability to produce potent allergens are pivotal in worsening asthma control. Due to the diverse clinical manifestations of fungal asthma and the lack of specific biomarkers, its diagnosis remains intricate. Diagnosing fungal asthma requires carefully assessing the patient's clinical history, immunological

Bronchiectasis is a chronic condition of global relevance resulting in permanent and irreversible structural airway damage. Bacterial infection in bronchiectasis is well studied; however, recent molecular studies identify fungi as important pathogens, either independently or in association with bacteria. Aspergillus species are established fungal pathogens in cystic fibrosis and their role is now increasingly being recognized in noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. While the healthy airway is constantly exposed to ubiquitously present Aspergillus conidia in the environment, anatomically damaged

We describe a case of a 23-year-old female patient with no apparent underlying diseases. She showed a discoloration of the proximal portion of the left big toenail with paronychia. Direct microscopy revealed septate hyphae with conidiophores, and a periodic acid-Schiff-stained nail specimen revealed septate hyphae branching at angles of approximately 45°. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, we finally arrived at the diagnosis of ungual aspergillosis caused by Aspergillus subramanianii. After p.o. administration of terbinafine and topical application of 10% efinaconazole solution, the diseas

BACKGROUND: Mediastinitis is a serious complication after cardiac surgery. While bacteria are the more common pathogens, fungal infections are rare. In particular, several cases of postoperative Aspergillus mediastinitis have been reported, the majority of which had an extremely poor outcome.
METHODS: A case of mediastinitis in a 42-year-old patient due to Aspergillus fumigatus after cardiac surgery is described. Two main risk factors were found: cardiogenic shock requiring veno-arterial extracorporeal life support and failure of primary closure of the sternum. A full recovery was attained af

Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) suffer from chronic lung infection and airway inflammation. Respiratory failure secondary to chronic or recurrent infection remains the commonest cause of death and accounts for over 90% of mortality. Bacteria as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia complex have been regarded the main CF pathogens and their role in progressive lung decline has been studied extensively. Little attention has been paid to the role of Aspergillus spp. and other filamentous fungi in the pathogenesis of non-ABPA (allergic bronchopulmonary aspergill

The use of multi-locus DNA sequence analysis has led to the description of previously unknown 'cryptic' Aspergillus species, whereas classical morphology-based identification of Aspergillus remains limited to the section or species-complex level. The current literature highlights two main features concerning these 'cryptic' Aspergillus species. First, the prevalence of such species in clinical samples is relatively high compared with emergent filamentous fungal taxa such as Mucorales, Scedosporium or Fusarium. Second, it is clearly important to identify these species in the clinical laboratory

The biofilm phenotype of Aspergillus species is an important and accepted clinical entity. While industrially these biofilms have been used extensively in important biofermentations, their role in clinical infection is less well defined. A recent flurry of activity has demonstrated that these interesting filamentous moulds have the capacity to form biofilms both in vitro and in vivo, and through various investigations have shown that these are exquisitely resistant to antifungal therapies through a range of adaptive resistance mechanisms independent of defined genetic changes. This review will
