The processing of threatening content tends to take priority over neutral or other emotional stimuli. Compared to other attentional biases (in response to threat), less research has been dedicated to understanding anticipatory attentional avoidance, and existing studies on this topic have yielded mixed results. In this study, we investigated anticipatory attentional avoidance, focusing on how predictive cues associated with threatening stimuli influence attentional processing before the actual threat appears. We used a cued visual probe task, in which a neutral cue (onset times: 100, 500, or 1

This study assessed the acquisition of conditional-associations using neutral and individually threatening nouns in 16 females with anorexia nervosa (AN), 16 females with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 16 normal controls (NC). Groups did not differ in terms of age, sex, handedness, depression, intelligence, verbal memory and verbal fluency measures. Furthermore, patients and controls were widely comparable on any test assessing neuropsychological functioning. In the conditional-associative learning (CAL) task, anorexic patients displayed an impaired performance with neutral material but not with ind

A hydranencephalic infant lacking cerebral hemispheres and a normal twin were tested for associative learning. After repeated trials in which two stimuli were temporally paired, test trials were given in which the second stimulus was omitted. Cardiac orienting responses to stimulus omission indicated that learning had taken place in both infants.

Psychedelics are emerging as potential treatments for neuropsychiatric conditions, with evidence suggesting a single administration can lead to enduring behavioural changes. While the underlying putative mechanism(s) remain unclear, there is evidence supporting altered learning as a key candidate. This systematic review examined studies assessing the effects of psychedelics on associative learning in humans and animals. Electronic databases were searched until 02/02/2026 for studies investigating differences in learning after classical psychedelic administration. 62 studies were included (2 hu

Therapies, including those incorporating clinical hypnosis, occur in the context of consciously mediated interpersonal interactions. While the presence of the non-conscious and its content is often acknowledged, how non-conscious content is accessed and utilized in the training curricula to which clinical hypnosis students are exposed is under-emphasized. This article explores two phenomena - priming and the innate tendency of the human brain to engage in associative learning - that, when incorporated into the interpersonal process that constitutes clinical hypnosis, could expand and enrich ou

Consensus is rapidly building to support a role for the cerebellum beyond motor function, but its contributions to non-motor learning remain poorly understood. Here, we provide behavioral, anatomical and computational evidence to demonstrate a causal role for the primate posterior lateral cerebellum in learning new visuomotor associations. Reversible inactivation of the posterior lateral cerebellum of male monkeys impeded the learning of new visuomotor associations, but had no effect on movement parameters, or on well-practiced performance of the same task. Using retrograde transneuronal trans

Associative learning during delay eyeblink conditioning (EBC) depends on an intact cerebellum. However, the relative contribution of changes in the cerebellar nuclei to learning remains a subject of ongoing debate. In particular, little is known about the changes in synaptic inputs to cerebellar nuclei neurons that take place during EBC and how they shape the membrane potential of these neurons. Here, we probed the ability of these inputs to support associative learning in mice, and investigated structural and cell-physiological changes within the cerebellar nuclei during learning. We find tha

Disabled-1 (Dab1) is an adaptor protein that is an obligate effector of the Reelin signaling pathway, and is critical for neuronal migration and dendrite outgrowth during development. Components of the Reelin pathway are highly expressed during development, but also continue to be expressed in the adult brain. Here we investigated in detail the expression pattern of Dab1 in the postnatal and adult forebrain, and determined that it is expressed in excitatory as well as inhibitory neurons. Dab1 was found to be localized in different cellular compartments, including the soma, dendrites, presynapt

This review presents the results of studies carried out in our laboratory that aim to investigate, through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the brain plasticity associated with motor sequence learning, defined as our ability to integrate simple stereotyped movements into a single motor representation. Following a brief description of Doyon and colleagues' model (2002, 2005, 2009) of motor skill learning that has guided this work, we then describe the functional changes that occur at the different (rapid, slow, automatization) acquisition phases, and propose specific roles that the

A total of 82 Chinese 11- and 12-year-olds with and without dyslexia were tested on four paired associate learning (PAL) tasks, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, rapid naming, and verbal short-term memory in three different experiments. Experiment 1 demonstrated that children with dyslexia were significantly poorer in visual-verbal PAL than nondyslexic children but that these groups did not differ in visual-visual PAL performance. In Experiment 2, children with dyslexia had more difficulties in transferring rules to new stimuli in a rule-based visual-verbal PAL task as compared

Two studies were performed that compared a "Paired" condition in which participants studied paired associates with a "Generated" condition in which participants completed word fragments to produce paired associates. In both tasks, participants were responsible for memory of the material either studied or generated. The experiments revealed significant differences between the responses of a predefined prefrontal region and a predefined parietal region. The parietal region responded more in the Generated condition than the Paired condition, whereas there was no difference in the prefrontal regio

OBJECTIVE: To define the learning curve associated with thoracoscopic spinal instrumentation by evaluating operative data and early outcomes of 1 surgeon's (B.L.) cases.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Thoracoscopic spinal instrumentation for the treatment of thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis has emerged as an alternative to open anterior and posterior techniques. The technique is technically demanding and has been perceived as having a prohibitive learning curve.
METHODS: The operative reports, charts, an

Associate learning for visual nonverbal and auditory verbal items was examined in 21 children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (SDCP) and 28 healthy children using four paired associate tasks. SDCP children showed poorer performance than the comparison group for learning pairs that required visual nonverbal responses, regardless of the stimulus modality. Within the SDCP group, lesion severity was assessed in 17 of the children. Lesion severity was related to the level of performance on paired associate tasks requiring visual nonverbal responses; lesion severity did not reach statistical si

To meet the widespread demand for subcutaneous delivery of antibody therapeutics, candidates with low viscosity, high solubility, and/or low aggregation propensity in concentrated formulations must be identified. Moreover, early identification of candidates with low self-association increases the likelihood of success at later stages of the development process. Here, we experimentally profile the self-association behavior of a panel of clinical-stage antibodies as a function of pH, excipient content, and antibody isotype. We find that acidic formulations (pH 5) with proline (200 mM) are most e

Traditionally recognized for guiding rRNA modifications, small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are increasingly appreciated as key regulators of drug response. However, snoRNA and drug association data remain limited, and computational approaches capable of capturing their complex, high-order relationships are scarce. Here, we present HMHLVI, a hybrid multi-view hypergraph learning with variational inference framework that integrates sequence, structural, and association information to predict snoRNA-drug response associations. HMHLVI constructs three higher-order networks called attribute, topology,

IMPORTANCE: Sport-related repetitive head impacts (RHIs) are linked to structural and functional brain changes and may be associated with risk for neurodegenerative disease. However, the locus of RHI-associated pathology that leads to adverse cognitive performance has yet to be characterized in vivo.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether orbitofrontal gray matter-white matter interface (GWI) microstructure is associated with soccer RHI and whether it mediates the association of RHI with cognitive performance.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study, performed at Albert Einstein

New solutions are needed to detect genotype-phenotype associations involved in microbial drug resistance. Herein, we describe a Group Association Model (GAM) that accurately identifies genetic variants linked to drug resistance and mitigates false-positive cross-resistance artifacts without prior knowledge. GAM analysis of 7,179 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) isolates identifies gene targets for all analyzed drugs, revealing comparable performance but fewer cross-resistance artifacts than World Health Organization (WHO) mutation catalogue approach, which requires expert rules and precedents.
