Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is common in both the general population and athletes with a much higher incidence in women than in men. We review current research on temporomandibular joint disorders, discuss relevant risk factors, manifestations of temporomandibular disorders in athletes, and treatment options. Certain sports, particularly contact sports, pose an increased risk for problems with the temporomandibular joint. The stress of athletic performance also may be a contributing factor. Mouthguards should be encouraged for prevention of injury and physical therapy is the most effec

BACKGROUND: Both serious athletes and patients attempting to maintain or improve their health through exercise are at risk of a number of conditions that are not frequently mentioned during medical training. Most of these are related to overuse.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to improve general practitioners' knowledge of a specific group of exercise-related conditions that occur in the anterior aspect of the lower limb below the knee, commonly referred to as the shin region.
DISCUSSION: Many having been previously grouped under the relatively meaningless term 'shin splints', these co

Trunk pain is a common cause of performance limitation and time away from sport in athletes. However, atraumatic trunk injuries are underrepresented in medical literature and underrecognized clinically. Delays in diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment can increase injury morbidity and return-to-play time. Currently, evidence-based guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of trunk pain in athletes are limited. Thus, we provide an overview of atraumatic sport-related injuries to the thoracic spine (disc herniation, scoliosis, kyphosis), ribcage (bone stress injury, costochondritis, Tiet

Participation in regular exercise of moderate intensity is associated with a plethora of systemic benefits, including a reduction in risk factors for coronary atherosclerosis; however, intensive exercise may paradoxically culminate in sudden cardiac arrest among individuals harboring arrhythmogenic substrates. The precise mechanism for arrhythmogenesis is likely multifactorial, however, surges in catecholamines, electrolyte shifts, acid-base disturbances, increased core temperature and demand myocardial ischemia are potential contributors. Although most deaths occur in middle aged and older ma

Thumb injuries are common in athletes and present a challenging opportunity for upper extremity physicians. Common injuries include metacarpal base fractures (Bennett and Rolando types), ulnar and radial collateral ligament injuries, dislocation of the carpometacarpal and metacarpophalangeal joints, and phalanx fractures. This review, although not exhaustive, highlights some of the most common thumb injuries in athletes. The treating physician must balance pressure from athletes, parents, coaches, and executives to expedite return to play with the long-term well-being of the athlete. Operative

Stress fractures are widely encountered in sport medicine and rheumatology. Stress fractures result from abnormal and repetitive loading on normal bone that lead to microdamage and then fracture. They occur after sudden increase in physical activity. They appear mostly at lower limbs. Women are at higher risk than men. Patients complain of mechanical pain. Clinical findings include focused pain and sometimes swelling. No biological test is useful for diagnosis. Plain radiographs are normal in early stage disease. MRI is the gold standard to confirm stress fracture. Treatments of stress fractur

Athletic heart syndrome refers to the physiological and morphological changes that occur in a human heart after repetitive strenuous physical exercise. Examples of exercise-induced changes in the heart include increases in heart cavity dimensions, augmentation of cardiac output, and increases in heart muscle mass. These cardiac adaptations vary based on the type of exercise performed and are often referred to as sport-specific cardiac remodeling. The hemodynamic effects of endurance and strength training exercise lead to these adaptations. Any abnormalities in chamber dilatation and left ventr

Millions of athletes train for and participate in competitive athletics each year. Many of these athletes will present to a cardiovascular specialist with signs or symptoms that might indicate heart disease and these athletes/patients will ask for advice on their ability to continue to train and compete safely. By virtue of their training, athletes׳ hearts may undergo significant structural and electrical change, presenting a special challenge for the cardiovascular specialist. It is important to understand normal adaptive changes in order to separate normal physiology from pathology.

Athletic activity may be associated with alterations in various neuroendocrine axes depending on the state of energy availability. In addition, genetic factors and an underlying predilection for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) may predispose some athletes to develop functional hypothalamic amenorrhea earlier than other athletes. In conditions of low energy availability associated with athletic activity, changes that occur in various neuroendocrine axes are primarily adaptive, and aim to either conserve energy for the most essential functions, or allow the body to draw on its reserves to mee

INTRODUCTION: The use of electrocardiogram in athletes as a routine screening method for diagnosing potentially dangerous cardiovascular diseases is still an issue of debate. According to the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology, the recording of electrocardiogram is necessary in all athletes as a screening method, whereas the guidelines of the American Heart Association do not necessitate an electrocardiogram as a screening method and they insist on detailed personal and family history and clinical examination. CLASSIFICATION OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM CHANGES IN ATHLETES: According to

Athletes rarely present with symptoms or clinical findings suggestive of vascular disease. However, vascular etiologies should be considered when an athlete complains of persistent symptoms which are refractory to conservative therapies commonly used for presumed musculoskeletal injuries. A comprehensive history should be performed, with special consideration to the postures the athlete assumes repeatedly during their chosen sport. Musculoskeletal anatomy surrounding the vascular bed of interest should be thoroughly reviewed. Physical examination should include provocative maneuvers specific t

Hip injuries are common in athletes, and there is an extensive differential diagnosis of potential causes. This article reviews the anatomy of the hip, and discusses the imaging findings of hip pathology in athletes including skeletal, intraarticular, and extra-articular abnormalities. The role of radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, MR arthrography, CT arthrography, and sonography in evaluating each condition is discussed.

Athletes face numerous hazards in their daily activities. An athlete's skin, in particular, endures repeated exposure to trauma, heat, moisture, and numerous allergens and chemicals. These factors combine with other unique and less well-defined genetically predisposing factors in the athlete's skin to cause both allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). As with other cases of contact dermatitis, these eruptions in athletes present as a spectrum of acute to subacute to chronic dermatitis. Recognizing the unique environmental irritants and allergens encountered by

A 60-year old male physician on staff at North Kansas City Hospital was admitted with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The physician is an avid long-distance runner. Ultimately, three other male physicians on staff, all long-distance runners, were identified as having lone atrial fibrillation. This prompted a literature search which initially indicated a higher than normal incidence of atrial fibrillation in endurance and elite athletes. However, recent data has questioned the validity of this observation. The management of the athlete with atrial fibrillation poses special concerns and can be

Brachial plexus injuries commonly occur in athletes participating in contact sports. The incidence of transitory brachial plexus injury is approximately 30% to 50% over the course of a high school, college, or professional football player's career. These injuries are called "stingers" or "burners" because of the associated tingling that occurs in the upper extremity after the injury. Brachial plexus injuries are poorly understood and sometimes are difficult to manage. Appropriate knowledge and understanding of these injuries along with prompt recognition, diagnosis, and treatment are essential

Cardiovascular screening of athletes is a challenging aspect of the preparticipation evaluation. While sudden cardiac death in young athletes is uncommon, preparticipation screening may identify some predisposing conditions that place individuals at increased risk. The most common pre-existing cardiac abnormalities in athletes causing sudden death in the United States are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital coronary anomalies, and Marfan syndrome. Preparticipation cardiovascular screening should pursue any history of cardiac symptoms or family history of premature cardiac disease, as well

The prevalence of asthma and exercise induced asthma increase in elite athletes of national and international level especially in endurance sports. Prolonged hyperventilation of dry or cold air and increased inhalation of pollutants or allergens could be an explanation. The subsequent airway inflammation which seems to regress in subjects quitting competition differs from classical asthma. This could represent a chronic adaptive response to exercise hyperventilation. With a proper treatment, asthma and exercise induced asthma are not a limiting factor for sport results, but the short and long

Groin pain in athletes is not infrequently a cause of frustration and aggravation to both doctor and patient. Complaints in the groin region can prove difficult to diagnose, particularly when they are of a chronic nature. These injuries are seen more commonly in sports that require specific use (or overuse) of the proximal musculature of the thigh and lower abdominal muscles. Some of the more common sports would be soccer, skiing, hurdling, and hockey. The differential diagnosis can cover a rather broad area of possibilities. Most common groin injuries are soft-tissue injuries, such as muscula

The symptom of chest pain in the athlete can represent anything from a nonspecific musculoskeletal strain to a life-threatening condition such as tension pneumothorax. For the physician charged with evaluating this patient population, a thorough knowledge of the possible etiologies, their usual diagnostic algorithms, available imaging modalities, and potential therapeutic options is essential. Although the vast majority of patients with traumatic chest pain will not harbor significant pathology, the clinician must be prepared for those few who do have such conditions, and be prepared to interv
