Kinesio tape (KT) is an elastic therapeutic tape used for treating sports injuries and a variety of other disorders. Chiropractor, Dr Kenso Kase, developed KT taping techniques in the 1970s. It is claimed that KT supports injured muscles and joints and helps relieve pain by lifting the skin and allowing improved blood and lymph flow. The profile of KT rose after the tape was donated to 58 countries for use during the 2008 Olympic Games, and was seen on high-profile athletes. Practitioners are asking whether they should use KT over other elastic adhesive tapes. The aim of this review was to eva

Numerous athletes with patellar tendinopathy (PT) use a patellar strap or sports tape during sports. This study's aim was to investigate the short-term effect of these orthoses on patellar tendon pain. Participants performed the single-leg decline squat, vertical jump test, and triple-hop test under four different conditions (patellar strap, sports tape, placebo, and control). Subsequently, participants practiced sports as usual for 2 weeks; during 1 week, they were assigned to one of the four conditions. Pain was measured with the visual analog scale (VAS). In total, 97 athletes with PT [61%

Soccer athletes at all levels of play are keenly aware of their equipment needs including cleat wear, and want to be protected from injury but without impeding on-field performance. Ankle injury is a common disorder that is prevalent in the sport of soccer and recent improvements in ankle prophylaxis interventions have proven effective. The aim of this study was to determine if the use of elastic taping or a neoprene sleeve alters performance, stability, and cleat comfort/support in soccer players compared to wearing a soccer cleat without any external support. Following the expansion of interdisciplinary communication among rehabilitative service providers, new techniques have been introduced for treating swallowing disorders. Kinesio taping (KT) is one of the recently noticed techniques in the rehabilitation of swallowing and feeding disorders. Given the novelty of this technique in research and practice, the present scoping review aimed to summarize the available evidence on the effects of KT on the oropharyngeal function related to swallowing, and to identify current knowledge gaps to guide future studies. The initial comprehensive search was con

To assess the published evidence on the effectiveness of various approaches to the prevention of ankle sprains in athletes, we used textbooks, journals, and experts in the field of sports medicine to identify citations. We identified 113 studies reporting the risk of ankle sprains in sports, methods to provide support, the effect of these interventions on performance, and comparison of prevention efforts. The most common risk factor for ankle sprain in sports is history of a previous sprain. Ten citations of studies involving athletes in basketball, football, soccer, or volleyball compared alt

Lesser metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint instability can cause pain in the MTP joints with ambulation. The goal of nonsurgical treatment is to offload the metatarsal heads and stabilize the MTP joints. Achilles stretching can be effective by decreasing pressure in the forefoot with ambulation. Metatarsal offloading does not stabilize the lesser MTP joints but can alleviate pain in the plantar surface of the metatarsal heads. Crossover taping and strapping can stabilize the MTP joint and resist MTP hyperdorsiflexion. Steroid injections can alleviate inflammation but is also associated with furthe

The practice of prophylactic ankle taping or wrapping to reduce the incidence of inversion ankle sprains in athletes has come under attack. The purpose of this study was to measure objectively one ankle taping technique's ability to withstand the stresses placed upon it by a standardized exercise routine. Electrogoniometers were used to measure the three-dimensional ankle motion of 20 subjects walking on a level surface and a 10 degrees sideslope. The evaluations were carried out under these three conditions: (1) both ankles untaped, (2) both ankles taped before exercises, and (3) both ankles

Therapists treating athletes with hand and wrist injuries may be involved in all stages of recovery, from the acute phase to return to sport. This article gives case examples of how creative use of custom and commercially available orthoses, splints, tape, and braces can augment various stages of recovery. Understanding the specific demands of the sport and respect for the standards of care are imperative to fabricating or fitting an athlete with the best device or customization of the athlete's own equipment for a safe return to sport.

The purpose of this article is to present the Kinesio taping method used to improve the upper extremity function in the adult with hemiplegia. The article discusses various therapeutic methods used in the treatment of stroke patients to achieve a functional upper extremity. The only taping technique for various upper extremity conditions that has been described in the literature is the athletic taping technique. In this article, some interpretation is offered on proper assessment of the nonfunctional upper extremity, including the emphasis on postural alignment, trunk control, and scapula alig

Each year 65% of young athletes and 25% of physically active adults suffer from at least one musculoskeletal injury that prevents them from continuing with physical activity, negatively influencing their physical and mental well-being. The treatment of musculoskeletal injuries with the adhesive elastic kinesiology tape (KT) decreases the recovery time. Patients can thus recommence physical exercise earlier. Here, a novel KT based on auxetic structures is proposed to simplify the application procedure and allow personalization. This novel KT exploits the form-fitting property of auxetics as wel

The purpose of this study was to compare the restrictive effects of the widely recognized standard method of ankle taping with those of a modified ankle taping method that incorporates an additional component, the subtalar sling. Both ankles of 30 college football players were measured for maximal passive motion before taping, immediately after taping, and after a 2 to 3 hour football practice session. Downward and inward motions of the foot within the sagittal and frontal planes were induced separately and in combination with each other to allow quantification of four ankle motions. The data
