Multilevel atlas comparisons reveal divergent evolution of the primate brain.

Whether the size of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in humans is disproportionate when compared to other species is a persistent debate in evolutionary neuroscience. This question has left the study of over/under-expansion in other structures relatively unexplored. We therefore sought to address this gap by adapting anatomical areas from the digital atlases of 18 mammalian species, to create a common interspecies classification. Our approach used data-driven analysis based on phylogenetic generalized least squares to evaluate anatomical expansion covering the whole brain. Our main finding suggests

Atlas-based shape analysis and classification of retinal optical coherence tomography images using the functional shape (fshape) framework.

We propose a novel approach for quantitative shape variability analysis in retinal optical coherence tomography images using the functional shape (fshape) framework. The fshape framework uses surface geometry together with functional measures, such as retinal layer thickness defined on the layer surface, for registration across anatomical shapes. This is used to generate a population mean template of the geometry-function measures from each individual. Shape variability across multiple retinas can be measured by the geometrical deformation and functional residual between the template and each

[Presentation of pyoderma gangraenosum in a dermatologic atlas of the early 19th century].

Pyoderma gangrenosum was first described in 1930 by Brunsting, Goeckermann and O'Leary. Nevertheless we found some illustrations in an atlas on dermatology, published by Marie-Nicolas Devergie in the first half of the 19th century, which appear to be pyoderma gangrenosum. In addition to discussions of typical syphilitic affections of the skin, Devergie's "Clinique de la Maladie Syphilitique" includes illustrations of gangrenous ulcers, which appeared unexpectedly after local and systemic therapy with mercury. Devergie interpreted those enlarging ulcers as a side effect of mercury therapy. Thus

Elucidating Neurodevelopmental Trajectories in Cancer with Topic Modeling: Revealing Persistent External Granule Layer Lineages in Medulloblastoma.

The cerebellar rhombic lip generates cerebellar progenitors and neurons that ultimately differentiate to comprise over half of all neurons in the adult human brain. Standard clustering approaches often fragment or miss rhombic lip progenitor populations entirely due to their transient nature, small size, and rapid state transitions, leaving fundamental questions unanswered about normal cerebellar development and how such processes may be hijacked in pediatric brain cancer. Medulloblastoma, the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor, affects approximately 500 children annually in the Unite

3D Atlas of the Pituitary Gland of the Model Fish Medaka (Oryzias latipes).

In vertebrates, the anterior pituitary plays a crucial role in regulating several essential physiological processes via the secretion of at least seven peptide hormones by different endocrine cell types. Comparative and comprehensive knowledge of the spatial distribution of those endocrine cell types is required to better understand their physiological functions. Using medaka as a model and several combinations of multi-color fluorescence in situ hybridization, we present the first 3D atlas revealing the gland-wide distribution of seven endocrine cell populations: lactotropes, thyrotropes, Lh

Whole mouse brain reconstruction and registration to a reference atlas with standard histochemical processing of coronal sections.

Advances in molecular neuroanatomical tools have expanded the ability to map in detail connections of specific neuron subtypes in the context of behaviorally driven patterns of neuronal activity. Analysis of such data across the whole mouse brain, registered to a reference atlas, aids in understanding the functional organization of brain circuits related to behavior. A process is described to image mouse brain sections labeled with standard histochemical techniques, reconstruct those images into a whole brain image volume and register those images to the Allen Mouse Brain Common Coordinate Fra

[Geometrical growth models of the fetal forebrain, cerebellum, brainstem and change of the cranial base angles during fetal period].

INTRODUCTION: Brain growth plays likely an important role for the skull growth. In the fetus, there exists an heterochrony for the growth of supratentorial (forebrain) and infratentorial regions (brainstem and cerebellum). The aim of the study was thus to model geometrically the growth of these two regions and to compare it with the inflection of the base of skull. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Brain growth measurements were performed from midsagittal photographs of fetal brains obtained from an Anatomical Atlas over a period from 10 to 40 amenorrhea weeks (AW). After countouring and pointing anatomi

Neuroanatomical and neurochemical atlas of the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) spinal cord.

Acomys cahirinus is an increasingly utilized model in various biological disciplines, particularly for studying the regeneration and developmental plasticity of the central nervous system due to its remarkable ability for neural tissue repair and early neurodevelopmental milestones. Despite its growing prominence in neuroscience, the lack of comprehensive neuroanatomical data hinders precise experimental design, especially in injury and regeneration studies. To address this gap, we present a neuroanatomical and neurochemical atlas of the Acomys cahirinus spinal cord, integrating anatomical, cy

Probabilistic mapping of deep brain stimulation effects in essential tremor.

OBJECTIVE: To create probabilistic stimulation maps (PSMs) of deep brain stimulation (DBS) effects on tremor suppression and stimulation-induced side-effects in patients with essential tremor (ET). METHOD: Monopolar reviews from 16 ET-patients which consisted of over 600 stimulation settings were used to create PSMs. A spherical model of the volume of neural activation was used to estimate the spatial extent of DBS for each setting. All data was pooled and voxel-wise statistical analysis as well as nonparametric permutation testing was used to confirm the validity of the PSMs. RESULTS: PSMs

Imaging atlas for eligibility and on-study safety of potential knee adverse events in anti-NGF studies (Part 1).

Monoclonal antibodies that bind and inhibit nerve growth factor (NGF) have demonstrated both, good analgesic efficacy and improvement in function in patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Despite initial promising data, trials in OA had been suspended by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to concerns over accelerated rates of OA progression. Imaging will play a crucial role in future clinical trials to define eligibility of potential participants and to monitor safety during the course of these studies. This will require baseline and frequent follow-up radiographs of both, the inde

Testing the Digital Atlas of Ancient Rare Diseases (DAARD) using a new case of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease from Early Byzantine (500-700 CE) Olympia, Greece.

OBJECTIVE: The first case of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) in Greece is presented. LCPD, a rare disease, is discussed using the Digital Atlas of Ancient Rare Diseases (DAARD), which tests the benefits of the database for diagnosing and contextualizing the new case with 42 archaeological cases of LCPD recorded in the DAARD. MATERIALS: A 30-40-year-old, probable male individual was found at the archaeological site of Olympia, Greece, dating to 500-700 CE. METHODS: Biological sex, age-at-death and pathological changes were investigated using macroscopic and osteometric methods. The DAARD pr

The Tabula Sapiens: A multiple-organ, single-cell transcriptomic atlas of humans.

Molecular characterization of cell types using single-cell transcriptome sequencing is revolutionizing cell biology and enabling new insights into the physiology of human organs. We created a human reference atlas comprising nearly 500,000 cells from 24 different tissues and organs, many from the same donor. This atlas enabled molecular characterization of more than 400 cell types, their distribution across tissues, and tissue-specific variation in gene expression. Using multiple tissues from a single donor enabled identification of the clonal distribution of T cells between tissues, identific

Multi-atlas based detection and localization (MADL) for location-dependent quantification of white matter hyperintensities.

The extent and spatial location of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) on brain MRI may be relevant to the development of cognitive decline in older persons. Here, we introduce a new method, known as the Multi-atlas based Detection and Localization (MADL), to evaluate WMH on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) data. This method simultaneously parcellates the whole brain into 143 structures and labels hyperintense areas within each WM structure. First, a multi-atlas library was established with FLAIR data of normal elderly brains; and then a multi-atlas fusion algorithm was developed by

A probabilistic atlas of human brainstem pathways based on connectome imaging data.

The brainstem is a critical structure that regulates vital autonomic functions, houses the cranial nerves and their nuclei, relays motor and sensory information between the brain and spinal cord, and modulates cognition, mood, and emotions. As a primary relay center, the fiber pathways of the brainstem include efferent and afferent connections among the cerebral cortex, spinal cord, and cerebellum. While diffusion MRI has been successfully applied to map various brain pathways, its application for the in vivo imaging of the brainstem pathways has been limited due to inadequate resolution and l

A cross-validated cytoarchitectonic atlas of the human ventral visual stream.

The human ventral visual stream consists of several areas that are considered processing stages essential for perception and recognition. A fundamental microanatomical feature differentiating areas is cytoarchitecture, which refers to the distribution, size, and density of cells across cortical layers. Because cytoarchitectonic structure is measured in 20-micron-thick histological slices of postmortem tissue, it is difficult to assess (a) how anatomically consistent these areas are across brains and (b) how they relate to brain parcellations obtained with prevalent neuroimaging methods, acquir

Atlas-based electrical source imaging for mouse EEG: Application to an Fmr1 knockout model.

Electrical source imaging (ESI) reconstructs where in the brain a scalp EEG signal arises. It is routine in humans but unestablished in the mouse, whose brain is some 3000 times smaller where it is not obvious that a sparse array can separate one region from another. We built an atlas-based ESI pipeline for 30-channel mouse EEG and tested it against simulated dipoles, across 18 combinations of source space, head model and inverse operator, with conductivity and noise sweeps. The best, a region-of-interest source space with an ellipsoid head model and sLORETA, recovered superficial sources to a

Sex-based representation in anatomical atlases: An analysis of illustrations used in anatomy teaching in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing awareness of issues related to sex and gender representation in medical education, previous studies have shown that anatomical atlases often present the male body as the default anatomical model, with female bodies more frequently depicted in sex-specific contexts. However, little is known about how such global visual patterns are reflected in atlases officially recommended within national medical curricula. The aim of this study was to assess sex-based representation in anatomical illustrations contained in the most frequently recommended atlases used at Polish

A Digital Anatomical Atlas of the Human Cerebellum at Subfolial Resolution.

Interest in the cerebellum has surged with the emerging consensus that it supports diverse functions that are topographically arranged across the cerebellar cortex. Further refinement of these in vivo structure-function relationships is limited by the resolution of existing atlases. Here we present a digital atlas derived from a recent reconstruction of the human cerebellar cortical surface with a mean inter-vertex spacing of 0.16 mm, sufficient to accurately trace the contours of the subfolia, while being consistent with the Schmahmann et al. atlas at the lobular level. We also present ARCUS,

Technical note: RP Atlas-an unprecedented proposal for a Brazilian population dental development chart based on the London atlas.

Age estimation methods through developmental atlases are simplified by image comparison using radiographs. Atlas-based methods have been utilized to create population-specific charts addressing population diversity. To tackle the absence of a dedicated atlas for the Brazilian population, the objective of the present study was to create a new atlas for dental development in Brazil based on the London Atlas chart. The new atlas (RP Atlas) is based on the median of tooth development, eruption, and resorption in individuals aged 5 to 23. The sample (567 individuals) was divided between females (n

An atlas of tsetse and animal African trypanosomiasis in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: In the 1980s and 1990s, great strides were taken towards the elimination of tsetse and animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) in Zimbabwe. However, advances in recent years have been limited. Previously freed areas have been at risk of reinvasion, and the disease in tsetse-infested areas remains a constraint to food security. As part of ongoing control activities, monitoring of tsetse and AAT is performed regularly in the main areas at risk. However, a centralized digital archive is missing. To fill this gap, a spatially explicit, national-level database of tsetse and AAT (i.e. atlas
