Persistence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) into adulthood and male-to-female ratios of this disorder in childhood and adulthood have been controversial issues in the ADHD diagnosis in adults. Research has resolved these controversies and in turn provided support for the validity of the diagnosis in adults. Support for the diagnosis can also be found in data that show the lifetime prevalence rate for comorbid conditions such as antisocial disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, and substance abuse disorders to be consistent across pediatric and adult populations with ADHD. To assess obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared with a control group. The ADHD was diagnosed based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, version IV (DSM-IV) criteria on successively seen elementary school children aged 6-12 years referred to a psychiatric clinic for suspected ADHD. A standardized interview (Kiddie-SADS-E), parents and teacher questionnaires, neuropsychological testing, and nocturnal polysomnography were completed for each child. Eighty-eight children (77 boys)

UNLABELLED: Atomoxetine (Strattera) is a selective noradrenaline (norepinephrine) reuptake inhibitor and nonstimulant that has shown greater efficacy than placebo in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. In two large, well controlled, 10-week trials in adults with ADHD, improvements in ADHD symptoms, as assessed by investigator- and patient-rated scores, were greater with oral atomoxetine (60, 90 or 120 mg/day) than with placebo. Mean reductions in the total ADHD symptom score on the investigator-rated Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale (CAARS) in atomoxetine versus placebo

Stimulant medications have been used to manage the associated symptoms of ADHD including inattention, developmentally inappropriate levels of activity, distractibility, and impulsivity. To date, clinical trials clearly have established the efficacy of the stimulants on the core symptoms of ADHD and associated aggression. Although the stimulants improve classroom productivity and behavior, few data have demonstrated the effectiveness of the stimulants on academic achievement. Finally, there has been a paucity of data on the long-term efficacy and safety of stimulants. Recommendations are made f

The following case is presented to demonstrate the difficulties associated with treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) when it is comorbid with a learning disability (LD). These two disorders exist simultaneously in about 30% of those diagnosed with ADHD. It is often difficult to separate the effects of one condition from those of the other. Researchers and clinicians often struggle with questions concerning the origin of inattentive symptoms. A child with LD may have trouble attending if placed in a classroom setting not designed to deal with issues related to LD, while

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has, historically, been viewed as a childhood disorder which would be outgrown by adulthood. More recent findings have established that the disorder often persists into adult-hood in a significant number of those diagnosed as children. Due to increased awareness and media attention being focused on ADHD in adults, greater numbers of adults are seeking evaluation and treatment for this disorder. The symptoms of ADHD are common to a variety of other psychiatric disorders including learning disabilities, so clinicians need to update their knowledge

Previous research has demonstrated volume reduction of the left globus pallidus in children with the codiagnoses of Tourette syndrome and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in comparison with children who have Tourette syndrome alone and with normal controls. The purpose of this study was to determine whether children with ADHD alone also had volume reduction of the globus pallidus or other basal ganglia structures. Subjects were 10 boys with ADHD, 16 boys with Tourette syndrome and ADHD, and 11 normal control boys. Groups were matched for age. Boys with ADHD were individually ma

Children suffering from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder frequently have numerous orofacial anomalies of concern to the dentist. Behavioral manifestations of the disorder frequently impair the patient's ability to perform home care adequately, make dental treatment arduous, and place the patient at risk of physical abuse from family and peers. Familiarity with the symptoms and treatment of the disorder will better prepare the dentist to meet the needs of this unique group of patients.

INTRODUCTION: Stimulants, including methylphenidate and amphetamines, are the first-line pharmacological treatment of ADHD in adults. However, in patients who do not respond or poorly tolerate stimulants, non-stimulant medications are usually recommended.
AREAS COVERED: The authors provide a narrative review of the literature on non-stimulant treatments for adult ADHD, including controlled and observational clinical studies conducted on adult samples. Atomoxetine has been extensively studied and showed significant efficacy in treating adult ADHD. Issues related to dosing, treatment duration,

Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are often accompanied by disrupted cortical folding. We applied a quantitative sulcal pattern analysis technique using graph structures to study the atypical cortical folding at the lobar level in ADHD brains in this study. A total of 183 ADHD patients and 167 typical developmental controls matched according to age and gender were enrolled. We first constructed sulcal graphs at the brain lobar level and then investigated their similarity to the typical sulcal patterns. The within-group variability and interh

Family problems are considered to be the main risk factor leading to the development of behavi oural problems during childhood and adolescence as well. A well documented fact in the current literature is that psychopathology of any kind in parents may influence behaviour, personality and appearance of psychopathology in their children. The permanent interaction between children's psychopathology or any kind of developmental disorder on one hand and parental psychopathology on the other, is considered to be one of the most important fields of research during the last decades. The aim of the pre

Comorbid anxiety disorders are observed in many patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): 25-33% compared to 6-10% in pediatric population. Therapeutic effects of Adaptol have been studied, indicated for children and adolescents with ADHD as monotherapy, in dosages of 25-35 mg/kg for 1-3 months. The positive influence of Adaptol on the core symptoms of ADHD was confirmed: reduction of hyperactivity and impulsivity was registered after 1st month, while clinical manifestations of the attention deficit were decreased on the 2nd-3rd months of the treatment. OBJECTIVES: We explored the reaction of boys with ADHD when they are angry at a friend. Due to their impulsivity and difficulty in focussing their attention, it may be expected that such boys be inclined to resort more frequently to confrontational and harmful strategies of anger regulation and less often to negotiation, reappraisal, or distancing strategies.
METHODS: A sample of 23 boys diagnosed with ADHD (without co-morbid Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder) between eight and thirteen years of age were compared to an age-matched sample of 23 boys with non-clinical behaviour.

AIM: The attention and inhibition problems found in children with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are also common in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Attempts to distinguish ADHD from FASDs in terms of these deficits are rare and were pursued in this study.
METHOD: A total of 116 children (47 with ADHD, 31 males, 16 females; 30 with FASDs, 17 males, 13 females; and 39 comparison children, 20 males, 19 females) participated. The mean age was 9 years 4 months (SD 1y 8mo) in the ADHD groups, 8 years 10 months (SD 1y 2mo) in the FASD group, and 9 years 1 mon

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with structural abnormalities in total gray matter, basal ganglia, and cerebellum. Findings of structural abnormalities in frontal and temporal lobes, amygdala, and insula are less consistent. Remarkably, the impact of comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) (comorbidity rates up to 60%) on these neuroanatomical differences is scarcely studied, while ODD (in combination with conduct disorder) has been associated with structural abnormalities of the frontal lobe, amygdala, and insula. The aim of this study was to inv

OBJECTIVES: In children and adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the comorbidity of the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) negatively affects the course of ADHD. The purpose of this study was to compare ADHD-diagnosed children with and without ODD comorbidity in terms of smoking, psychoactive substance use, disciplinary punishments at school, criminal behaviors, and unintentional injuries.
METHODS: This study included 109 children diagnosed with ADHD alone and 79 children with the ADHD-ODD comorbidity from a child psychiatry outpatient clinic. The child
