Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance among adolescents in the United States. Adolescent females are recognized as one group at risk for giving birth to babies with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Sixth through eighth grade Native Americans were surveyed about their attitudes toward and knowledge of FAS risk factors and prevention strategies. Data revealed that 52% of students drank alcohol prior to the survey. Though sexually active, students lacked knowledge about the relationship between alcohol and FAS. The study revealed 1) limited prevention programs in middle schools and 2) the mo

Background: According to epidemiological data, over 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental disorders, presenting one of the major challenges of modern medicine. In their everyday lives, patients, in addition to fighting the disease itself, often struggle with stigmatization. This phenomenon negatively affects both the diagnostic and therapeutic processes, as well as the patients' everyday functioning. This study aimed to assess stigma attitudes toward psychiatry and psychiatric patients among undergraduate medical students. Methods: This study used a Computer-Assisted Web Interview (C

INTRODUCTION: Although fibromyalgia is one of the most common and clinically important rheumatologic entities, physicians frequently report that their training fails to prepare them to manage this disease. Many medical schools devote insufficient time and attention to the subject of fibromyalgia, resulting in training gaps that can manifest as failures of both knowledge and empathy. There is a need for evidence-based, time-efficient methods for teaching this important subject. We have developed a narrative-driven video presentation for clerkship students and sought to evaluate its impact on fi

PURPOSE: The incidence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is increasing, even though it is 100% preventable. This study examined use of, knowledge about, and attitudes toward alcohol of women requesting emergency contraception (EC) and/or a pregnancy test, and evaluated whether a brief intervention would be effective in educating them about the risks of FASD.
DATA SOURCES: Fifty women from two outpatient clinics participated. Information was collected on demographic and personal health habits, alcohol use, and knowledge of and attitudes toward alcohol. As a brief intervention to incre

In Zimbabwe, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) encounter significant challenges, including HIV risk and gender-based violence. This study analyses data from 7,211 AGYW aged 13-24 from the 2017 Zimbabwe Violence Against Children Survey. Using a multivariable logistic regression model, it examines the associations between three protective factors: positive parenting, food security, and equitable-gender attitudes and 12 outcomes. Westfall-Young stepdown procedure was used to adjust for multiple hypothesis testing. Percentage predicted probabilities of each outcome occurring in several scena

BACKGROUND: Knowledge and attitudes regarding HIV play a crucial role in prevention and control efforts. Understanding the factors influencing HIV-related knowledge and attitudes is essential for formulating effective interventions and policies. This study aims to investigate the possibility of an interaction between education and wealth in influencing HIV-related knowledge and attitudes among women in Ghana.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the Ghana Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), a nationally representative sample, were analyzed. Statistical summaries were computed using place

Certain deformities of the hip joint seem to predispose the hip to the development of osteoarthrosis. Successful surgical correction of these deformities before the onset of osteoarthrosis requires accurate characterization of the anatomic deviations from normal as the first step in planning corrective osteotomy. Three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) reconstruction in planning reconstructive hip osteotomy has most often been employed in developmental dysplasia of the hip. Computed tomography scanning with three-dimensional reconstruction can characterize the often complex deviations from

Risk attitudes-the willingness to accept uncertainty for larger potential rewards-are often treated as a stable individual trait, yet people's risky choices change markedly across contexts and even across repetitions of identical decisions. Here we show, using modelling and neuroimaging, that such rapid changes emerge from Bayesian inference on noisy magnitude representations in parietal cortex. Participants underwent fMRI while choosing between safe and risky options that are either held in working memory or shown on screen. Options held in working memory are noisier and more prone to central

Older adult participants in the Intelligent Systems for Assessment of Aging Changes study (ISAAC) carried out by the Oregon Center for Aging and Technology (ORCATECH) were surveyed regarding their attitudes about unobtrusive home monitoring and computer use at baseline and after one year (n=119). The survey was part of a longitudinal study using in-home sensor technology to detect cognitive changes and other health problems. Our primary objective was to measure willingness to share health or activity data with one's doctor or family members and concerns about privacy or security of monitoring

INTRODUCTION: The Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection is a crucial strategy for achieving global HBV elimination by 2030. As HBV testing forms the foundation of effective PMTCT programs, empowering women of reproductive age to accept HBV testing and screening services is essential. This study applied the Theory of Planned Behaviour to investigate the impact of psychosocial factors, including attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, and risk perception, on HBV testing intentions among women of reproductive age.

BACKGROUND: Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) is a debilitating neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by the parasite Schistosoma haematobium. In Ghana, FGS is endemic, especially in communities around Lake Volta. Despite the vulnerability of women in these communities, limited literature exists on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP). This study assessed KAP regarding FGS among women living in communities along the Volta Lake.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a multistage sampling technique to recruit women aged 18 years and above. Data were co

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is essential for health and its shortage exacerbates overall mortality. Health care workers (HCWs) need to educate on its uses and sources although studies indicate their low level of practice. The main aim of this study is therefore to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of measuring adult vitamin D status, diagnosis of deficiency and managing health consequences among HCWs in Ethiopia.
METHODS: This study was conducted in three ecologies covering lowland, midland and highland districts. A total of 405 health care workers with different levels were interviewed.

Background/Objectives: Sociocultural attitudes toward appearance and body image are important components of women's psychological well-being, particularly in the context of physical activities involving body exposure, such as pole dance. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare body image and sociocultural attitudes toward appearance between women practicing pole dance and women not engaged in this activity, and to examine the associations between these variables. Methods: The study included 207 women practicing pole dance (PDG) in clubs and schools across Poland and 180 women not

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma remains a primary barrier to the elimination of the HIV epidemic worldwide. No studies have examined long-term changes in the distribution of stigmatizing attitudes within populations.
METHODS: We conducted a whole-population, open cohort study of adults in 8 villages in rural southwestern Uganda, with 5 biennial surveys spanning 2014-2024 (N=1,776 at baseline; 869 participated in all waves). We measured individual negative attitudes toward people with HIV ("public stigma") and perceptions of negative attitudes among others ("perceived stigma") using parallel 15

Genetic counselling for inherited susceptibility to cancer involves communication of a significant amount of information about possible consequences of different interventions. This study explores counsellors' attitudes to computer software designed to aid this process. Eight genetic counsellors used the software with actors playing patients. Clinicians' rating of expected patient satisfaction, content, accuracy, timeliness, format, overall value, ease of use, effect on the patient-provider relationship and effect on clinician's performance were evaluated via qualitative and quantitative analy

BACKGROUND: Alcohol exposure in pregnancy is a common and modifiable risk factor for poor pregnancy and child outcomes. Alcohol exposure in pregnancy can cause a range of physical and neurodevelopmental problems in the child including the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). In order to improve prevention strategies, we sought to describe the knowledge and attitudes of women of childbearing age regarding alcohol consumption during pregnancy and its effects on the fetus.
METHODS: We conducted a national cross-sectional survey via computer assisted telephone interview of 1103 Australian wom

This study reports the initial results of an evaluation of Medcast, a commercial medical information service that uses intelligent pull technology to deliver medical information to practicing physicians. Medical news, CME, and other information are transferred by modem nightly to the physician's computers where this information can be accessed at a convenient time. A survey was faxed to 195 subscribers to the system. A total of 73 (39%) responded. The results indicate that prior to implementation of the Medcast system, almost 40 percent of the respondents did not use their computers for profes
