Despite their rigorous training, studies have shown that physicians experience higher rates of mental illness, substance abuse, and suicide compared to the general population. An online questionnaire was sent to a random sample of physicians across Canada to assess physicians' knowledge of the incidence of mental illness among physicians and their attitudes towards disclosure and treatment in a hypothetical situation where one developed a mental illness. We received 139 responses reflecting mostly primary care physicians and nonsurgical specialists. The majority of respondents underestimated t

BACKGROUND: TRiM (Trauma Risk Management) has been shown to improve mental health and attitudes towards mental health in high-risk occupational groups; however, there has been no research into how TRiM might work for railway workers.
AIMS: To assess whether attending a TRiM training course alters mental health and attitudes to mental health-related help-seeking in railway workers.
METHODS: Workers completed a survey assessing mental health and attitudes towards mental health and help-seeking, before and after a 2-day TRiM course; follow-up questionnaires were administered 4 months post-cours

BACKGROUND: Despite good evidence that reducing sodium intake can reduce blood pressure (BP), salt intake in people with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) or type 2 diabetes (T2DM) remains high. The purpose of this study was to describe the knowledge and beliefs of health risks associated with a high salt diet in adults with diabetes.
METHODS: Men and women with T1DM (n = 27; age 38 ± 16 years) or T2DM (n = 124; age 60 ± 11 years) were recruited.
RESULTS: Nine (6.0%) respondents knew the correct maximum daily recommended upper limit for salt intake. Thirty-six (23.9%) participants were not concerned wi

An estimated 170 million people worldwide have hepatitis C, which is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, health professionals (HPs) are likely to care for people with hepatitis C at some stage in their careers. However, little is known about HPs' attitudes towards treating people with hepatitis C. An analytical, cross-sectional survey was conducted to explore the inter-relationship among HPs' hepatitis C knowledge and attitudes towards treating people with hepatitis C and their self-reported clinical behaviour: Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 3675 co

OBJECTIVES: Blacks and poor persons share a greater burden of oral disease and are less likely to seek dental care on a regular basis. The role of dental attitudes and knowledge of services on this circumstance is unclear. The authors quantified group differences in dental attitudes and knowledge of services and related them to regularity of dental care use.
METHODS: As part of the baseline phase of The Florida Dental Care Study, a longitudinal study of oral health, 873 respondents who had at least one tooth and who were 45 years or older participated for an interview and a clinical dental ex

BACKGROUND: The Ebola epidemic exposed the weak state of health systems in West Africa and their devastating effect on frontline health workers and the health of populations. Fortunately, recent reviews of mobile technology demonstrate that mHealth innovations can help alleviate some health system constraints such as balancing multiple priorities, lack of appropriate tools to provide services and collect data, and limited access to training in health fields such as mother and child health, HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health. However, there is little empirical evidence of mHealth impro

BACKGROUND: Prior to introduction of universal varicella vaccination, it is crucial to gain insight into the willingness to vaccinate among the population. This is because suboptimal national vaccination coverage might increase the age of infection in children, which will lead to higher complication rates. We studied the attitude and intention to vaccinate against varicella among Dutch public health professionals who execute the National Immunisation Programme (NIP), and parents.
METHODS: Medical doctors and nurses of regional public health services (RPHS) and child health clinics (CHC), and

Clinical practice guidelines indicate treatments for specific anxiety diagnoses. Misdiagnosing specific anxiety disorders as unspecified anxiety may prevent patients from receiving appropriate care. Provider knowledge and attitudes may influence diagnostic practices. This study evaluated provider knowledge of diagnostic criteria for anxiety disorders and attitudes toward diagnostic processes and the relevance of diagnosis to patients' treatment. This qualitative analysis of interviews included 32 Veterans Health Administration providers in Primary Care Behavioral Health and Specialty Mental He

BACKGROUND: With the recent pandemic of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients for their compromised immune system have been in significant concern. Awareness and attitude about this virus have an important impact on infection prevention and coping with stress and anxiety. So we conducted this study to assess knowledge, attitude, and mental health status in MS and NMOSD patients within the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, the link of Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) and

HIV risk perception is a known determinant of HIV prevention behaviors among vulnerable populations. Lesser known is the combined influence of risk perception and efficacy beliefs on PrEP use. We examined the associations between levels of risk perception and strength of efficacy beliefs on intent to use PrEP in a sample of adult Black and Latina women. Guided by the risk perception attitudes (RPA) framework, we used cluster analysis to identify four interpretable groups. We ran analysis of covariance models to determine the relationship between membership in the RPA framework groups and inten

The scope of this study was to conduct cross-cultural adaptation and evaluate the reproducibility of a questionnaire designed by a team from the University of London to assess knowledge and attitudes of health professionals during primary care when faced with cases of child physical abuse. The translation rigorously followed the criteria described by Herdman (1998), to maintain maximum functional equivalence. The adapted questionnaire was tested on 107 health care professionals from Belo Horizonte. Standard and Weighted Kappa tests were used to evaluate the reproducibility of the instrument. M

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacovigilance (PV) is fundamental for public health, focusing on the detection, evaluation, and prevention of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). ADRs significantly contribute to global morbidity and mortality. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) play a crucial role in ensuring drug safety, as their expertise is essential for the timely identification, management, and reporting of ADRs. Despite the importance of PV, underreporting remains a critical challenge, particularly in developing countries. The PV system in Georgia is ineffective and characterized by underreporting from healthc

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) and/or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome remains a significant global health issue, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Medical male circumcision (MMC) demonstrated effectiveness in decreasing the spread of HIV, more specifically through heterosexual contact with HIV-positive partners. Studies have shown a correlation between male circumcision and lower HIV prevalence, especially in regions where circumcision is a cultural practice. The purpose of the study was to determine the knowledge and attitudes of men utilising the MMC services

BACKGROUND: Tobacco-related illnesses are among the leading preventable causes of death for Latinos/as in the United States. Latino/a groups are less likely to receive advice to quit from health professionals or use tobacco cessation strategies. The position of community health workers (CHWs) warrants further attention to address tobacco-related disparities in Latino/a communities. The objective of this study was to describe CHWs' roles to inform future smoking cessation training to ensure relevance and accessibility.
METHODS: A needs assessment survey, including a 10-item tobacco knowledge q
