Evaluating ChatGPT's Adherence to Hoarseness Guidelines: A Three-Rater Study Including an Otolaryngologist, an Audiologist, and the Model Itself.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the alignment of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), based on Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4) with the 2018 Clinical Practice Guideline on Hoarseness (Dysphonia), using a structured three-rater evaluation involving an otolaryngologist, an audiologist, and ChatGPT. METHODS: Thirteen guideline statements were converted into 15 open-ended clinical questions and independently answered by ChatGPT. Responses were assessed for consistency with the guideline using a three-point scale (consistent, partially consistent, inconsistent). Evaluations were pe

The Current State of Evidence Regarding Audiologist-Provided Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for the Management of Tinnitus: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for tinnitus management is effective and widely recommended by national and international practice guidelines. However, all the evidence for CBT so far has come from Psychologist-led programs, and the potential role of Audiologists in providing CBT for tinnitus remains an important consideration. OBJECTIVES: This study sets out to systematically map the body of literature relating to Audiologist-provided CBT for tinnitus, in order to summarise the current state of evidence and determine directions for future research. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Sour

Bridging the Access Gap: The Telepractice Experience of Speech Therapists and Audiologists at a Public Health Care Facility in South Africa.

South Africa is a low to middle income country (LMIC) with a population of 60 million people. The public health sector serves more than 80% of the population. Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital is a central level public health care facility situated in Gauteng. The Speech Therapy and Audiology Department provides insight into their telepractice services through a qualitative approach. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in therapists exploring telepractice as a sustainable model of service delivery. Therapists and patients encountered many challenges to the implementation of tele

Audiologist-Guided Internet-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Adults With Tinnitus in the United Kingdom: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Specialist tinnitus services are in high demand as a result of the negative effect tinnitus may have on quality of life. Additional clinically and cost-effective tinnitus management routes are needed. One potential route is providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for tinnitus via the Internet (iCBT). This study aimed to determine the efficacy of guided iCBT, using audiological support, on tinnitus distress and tinnitus-related comorbidities, in the United Kingdom. A further aim was to establish the stability of intervention effects 2-months postintervention. The hypothesis was that

Effectiveness of an Over-the-Counter Self-fitting Hearing Aid Compared With an Audiologist-Fitted Hearing Aid: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Hearing loss is a highly prevalent condition, with numerous debilitating consequences when left untreated. However, less than 20% of US adults with hearing loss use hearing aids. Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids became available in October 2022 to improve access and affordability. However, clinical effectiveness studies of available OTC hearing aids using the existing devices in the market are limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effectiveness of a self-fitting OTC hearing aid with remote support and a hearing aid fitted using audiologist-fitted best practices. DESIGN,

Long-term efficacy of audiologist-guided Internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy for tinnitus in the United States: A repeated-measures design.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the long-term outcomes 1-year after undertaking an Internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) for tinnitus distress in a US population. Secondary aims were to identify the effects on additional difficulties associate with tinnitus and any unwanted events related to ICBT for tinnitus. METHODS: A repeated-measures design with 4 time points was used. Participants previously undertaking two randomized ICBT efficacy trials for tinnitus in the US were invited to participate. Of the 200 invited, 132 (66 %) completed the 1-year follow-up questionnaire. The

Audiologist-led screening of acoustic neuromas in patients with asymmetrical sensorineural hearing loss and/or unilateral tinnitus: our experience in 1126 patients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients within an otolaryngology department presenting with asymmetrical sensorineural hearing loss and/or unilateral tinnitus can be safely and cost-efficiently screened for acoustic neuroma by audiologists as a first or only point of contact. METHODS: A prospective case series and cost analysis were conducted at a tertiary referral centre. Between April 2013 and March 2017, 1126 adult patients presented to the audiology department with asymmetrical sensorineural hearing loss and/or unilateral tinnitus. All were screened for acoustic neuroma with magnetic res

Exploring the unemployment crisis among speech therapists and audiologists in South Africa: perspectives on institutional roles, professional bodies, and the path to job creation.

BACKGROUND: Despite the critical need for speech therapists and audiologists to meet various healthcare demands, including those outlined in the National Health Insurance Bill, unemployment among these professionals in South Africa remains a growing concern. Previous studies indicate that 16% of newly graduated speech therapists and audiologists are unemployed within the first year after completing community service, with this figure increasing to 19% by the second year. However, little is known about the lived experiences of unemployment among these professionals. PURPOSE: To explore the liv

A culturally adapted psychologically informed, audiologist-delivered, manualized intervention for chronic tinnitus patients in Malaysia: Protocol for a randomized controlled feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus, a phantom auditory perception, varies from mild awareness to intolerable sounds that can severely impact psychological well-being, sometimes leading to suicidal ideation. While its causality remains unclear, studies show a strong link between tinnitus severity and psychological distress. A manualized intervention developed in the United Kingdom for audiologists, using a low-intensity, psychologically informed approach, has been successfully trialed in Western populations. However, its feasibility in Asian settings, particularly in Malaysia with its diverse cultures, remai
