Auditory Hallucinations: An Audiological Horizon?

BACKGROUND: Interesting data and theories have emerged regarding auditory hallucinations (AHs) in patients with schizophrenia. The possibility that these patients may have changes in the anatomy of the auditory cortex and/or subcortical structures of the central auditory nervous system and present with deficits on audiological tests is important information to the audiology community. However, it seems clear that, in general, audiologists are not sufficiently aware of these findings. PURPOSE: There are two main purposes of this article: (1) to educate audiologists about AHs related to schizop

Audiological findings in Noonan syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate audiologic properties of patients with Noonan syndrome and compare these findings with those of unaffected peers. METHODS: The study included 17 children with Noonan syndrome and 20 typically developing children without Noonan syndrome. Pure tone and speech audiometry, immitancemetric measurement, otoacoustic emissions measurement and auditory brainstem response tests were applied to all (n = 37) children. RESULTS: Hearing thresholds of children with Noonan syndrome were higher (poorer) than those observed unaffected peers, while the hearing

Audiological manifestations in vitiligo patients.

INTRODUCTION: The hallmark of vitiligo is the disappearance of melanocytes from the skin due to an as yet unidentified mechanism. The presence of melanocytes in the auditory apparatus suggests that this system could possibly be affected by vitiligo, which targets the melanocytes of the whole body and not just the skin. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of auditory alterations in patients with vitiligo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 21 patients diagnosed with vitiligo were enrolled in this study. A group of 20 healthy subjects served as a control group. Pure tone audiom

Audiological manifestations of allergic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is associated with excess specific immunoglobulin E. Inner ear involvement (via both cellular and humoral immunity) is poorly understood, but appears to arise from the endolymphatic sac and duct. AIMS: To assess the otological and audiological status of patients with allergic rhinitis. METHODOLOGY: Thirty allergic rhinitis patients (14 men, 16 women; age 17-45 years, mean 31 years) and 20 controls (12 men, eight women; age 21-42 years, mean 27 years) underwent audiological investigation. RESULTS: All study group patients had sensorineural (rather than conductiv

Audiological findings in osteogenesis imperfecta.

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an inherited bone and connective tissue disorder associated with the lifelong occurrence of frequent fractures following even mild trauma. Hearing loss is frequently reported in patients with OI. PURPOSE: This investigation is a retrospective study of measurements of tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions in a sample of patients with OI grouped according to age. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between the type of OI, age, and audiological findings in a sample of individuals with OI. RESE

Audiological evaluation of patients with otosclerosis.

Even though the diagnosis of otosclerosis is confirmed definitively during surgery, preoperative diagnosis and determination of the indication for surgery are made based on audiological evaluation. Audiological tests should firmly establish a conductive component to hearing loss. The measurement of pure-tone air and bone conduction thresholds has limitations that prevent an accurate diagnosis based solely upon these test results. Such limitations include general variability of threshold measurements, individual variations of tests in the bone conduction mode, and complex interactions between c

Audiological abnormalities in patients with vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that vitiligo is a systemic disease affecting the entire pigmentary system. AIM: To investigate the subclinical abnormalities of melanin-containing cellular elements of the auditory system in patients with vitiligo. METHODS: We studied the conventional audiometric investigations and brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) of 57 active patients with vitiligo and 50 healthy human subjects. The I, III and V latencies, and I-III, III-V and I-V interpeak latencies (IPL) between the groups were compared. RESULTS: A mild degree of sensorineural hypoac

Audiological range in Turner's syndrome.

Turner's syndrome is generally characterised by bilateral gonadal disgenesis, short stature and inadequate sexual development secondary to anomalous karyotype. The purely otorhinolaryngoiatric pathology considerably influences the symptomatological features in Turner's subject and this is based on possible morphologically structured anomalies in the external, middle and inner ear, but also on the oral cavity and pharynx. From this there is evidence of otological emergence on a phlogistic infectious basis with remarkable long-term repercussion on the hearing process. Otofunctional evaluation in

Audiological assessment of unilateral deafness.

Unilateral deafness constitute medical (aetiological diagnosis, treatment, hearing aid fitting) and social problems (no certification of disability). Following audiological examinations were performed in the study: pure tone audiometry (PTA), impedance audiometry, auditory brainstem responses (ABR), otoacoustic emissions (OAE), as well as balance, taste, examinations and electric sensitivity of the acoustic nerve. In cases of tinnitus the parameters of its character were done. All of our patients underwent X-ray investigations, i.e. ear X-ray by Schüller and Stenvers methods, computerized tomo

Video otoscopy in audiologic practice.

Recent advances in endoscopic optics and miniature video camera technology have made video otoscopy (VO) accessible to audiologists in a practical way. Seven categories of VO applications are presented with clinical examples: (1) general examination of the earcanal and tympanic membrane, (2) physician communication/telemedicine, (3) hearing instrument selection and fitting applications, (4) patient education, (5) scope of practice reinforcement, (6) knowledge base/skill growth, and (7) cerumen management.

Audiological profiles and Menière's disease.

Pure-tone audiograms of 501 patients with preoperative Menière's disease were analyzed. Age of onset and incidence of bilaterality were studied. The most common audiogram was the peak-type (50.26%), next the falling-type (26.26%), and then the dip-type (9.24%). Although few papers mention this peak audiogram, we suggest it is a diagnostic feature of Menière's disease. Average age of onset was 42.59 years; this did not differ from males to females. Prevalence in females exceeded that in males by about 4:3. The disease was bilateral in 31.13%. Generally, those with better hearing thresholds at t

Audiological findings in glomus tumours.

Glomus tumours of the skull base are rare, but as they present with symptoms of hearing loss and tinnitus they are a clinical entity of which audiologists should be aware. This paper describes the findings of the major series of skull base glomus tumours found in the literature, and notes that the contribution of conductive and sensorineural components varies with tumour classification. The reported incidence of hearing loss and tinnitus in glomus tympanicum and glomus jugulare is reviewed and compared with the Cambridge series, in which two tumours were Fisch type A, four type B, two type C a

[Kniest syndrome. An audiological study].

In this syndrome there is a disproportionate dwarfism with kyphoscoliosis, stiffness of the joints, minor facial dysmorphia, myopia and both conductive and sensorineural deafness in 50 percent of patients. It is a dominant autosomic heritable malady of unknown incidence, but both sexes seems equally affected. The patient's condition is diagnosed at birth, because of the short limbs and the enlargement of the joints. In the presented case, diagnosed at birth, the deafness was suppose to be transmissive, owing to the coexistence of a cleft palate, and consequently a grommet was inserted in the t

Audiologic characteristics of the patient with otosclerosis.

The audiologic manifestations of otosclerosis are as distinctive as they are varied. When pure stapedial otosclerosis is present, the most prominent audiologic signs are elicited in response to the use of low-frequency stimuli, reflecting the effect that increased stiffness has on the transfer function of the middle ear. Characteristic abnormalities appear on tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, and the pure-tone audiogram. When the disease process extends into the cochlea, a sensorineural hearing loss develops, which may be accompanied by vestibular symptoms and/or tinnitus. Complete audiologic e

Preschool otologic and audiologic screening.

A study of otologic and audiologic screening of preschool children including tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, and pure-tone screening was carried out at school sites. Subsequent pure-tone threshold tests and otolaryngologic examinations were carried out in a hospital setting. Complete data are available on 1,335 subjects, ages 3 through 5 years. Results are reported in comparison with those of an earlier Pittsburgh screening study. The results of the earlier study showed that loss of hearing sensitivity could not be predicted by the otologic findings, and conversely, the otologic findings coul

Audiologic evaluation of deaf children.

This paper describes an audiologic test battery for hearing-impaired children which includes otoscopic examination, tympanometry, pure-tone audiometry, speech perception testing, and hearing aid evaluation. Several of the procedures and modifications to apparatus have been developed specifically for use with deaf children. Clinical data are presented from 160 hearing-impaired children (age range three-16 years). Eighteen percent of their ears were found to contain excessive cerumen and to require ear canal irrigation. The incidence of abnormal tympanograms was high for young children but decre
