Olfactory-auditory sensory integration in the lateral entorhinal cortex.

Multisensory integration plays an important role in animal cognition. Although many studies have focused on visual-auditory integration, studies on olfactory-auditory integration are rare. Here, we investigated neural activity patterns and odor decoding in the lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) under uni-sensory and multisensory stimuli in awake, head-fixed mice. Using specific retrograde tracing, we verified that the LEC receives direct inputs from the primary auditory cortex (AC) and the medial geniculate body (MGB). Strikingly, we found that mitral/tufted cells (M/Ts) in the olfactory bulb (OB

Scopolamine attenuates tinnitus-related plasticity in the auditory cortex.

High doses of salicylate induce a temporary hearing deficit and a temporary subjective tinnitus in humans and animals. In animals, salicylate suppresses activity in the ascending auditory system but generates activity and plasticity in the auditory cortex and central amygdala. In addition to changes in the auditory system evoked by hearing impairment, enhanced stress may be crucial for the salicylate-induced alterations in the auditory cortex. The central amygdala responds to stress, and may influence cortical excitability and plasticity through cholinergic mechanisms. We investigated whether

Binaural interaction revisited in the cat primary auditory cortex.

The binaural interactions of neurons were studied in the primary auditory cortex (AI) of barbiturate-anesthetized cats with a matrix of binaural tonal stimuli varying in both interaural level differences (ILD) and average binaural level (ABL). The purpose of this study was to determine: 1) the distribution of preferred binaural combinations (PBCs) of a large population of neurons and its relationships with binaural interactions and binaural monotonicity; 2) whether monaural responses are predictive of binaural responses; and 3) whether there is a restricted set of representative binaural stimu

Auditory compensation for early blindness in cat cerebral cortex.

Single-neuron activity was recorded in the caudal part of the anterior ectosylvian (AE) cortex of cats that had been deprived of vision for several years by means of binocular lid suture shortly after birth and in normal control animals. Over 300 neurons were tested in each group with auditory, visual, and somatosensory stimuli. We confirmed the existence of an anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV) in the fundus and ventral bank of the AE sulcus. Neurons in AEV had purely visual responses in normal cats. In visually deprived cats, by contrast, only a minority of cells in this area still respo

Pure word deafness after bilateral primary auditory cortex infarcts.

In pure word deafness, comprehension and repetition of speech are impaired, but reading, writing, and spontaneous speech are preserved. Pure word deafness is distinguished from generalized auditory agnosia by the preserved ability to recognize environmental sounds. We examined a patient with pure word deafness associated with bilateral infarctions of the primary auditory cortex, who could use auditory affective intonation to enhance comprehension. The primary auditory cortex seems to be essential for comprehending speech, but comprehension of nonverbal sounds and affective prosody may be media

Predictive encoding of auditory sequences in the human prefrontal cortex.

Humans extract regularities from the environment to form expectations that guide perception and optimize behavior. Although the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is central to this process, the relative contributions of orbitofrontal (OFC) and lateral PFC (LPFC) remain unclear. Here, we show that the brain tracks sound regularities in an auditory deviance detection task to predict when a target deviant will occur. Intracranial EEG in epilepsy patients reveals prefrontal engagement, with earlier expectancy-related modulation in OFC and later modulation in LPFC. Connectivity analyses indicate bidirectiona

Decoding Music-Evoked Emotions in the Auditory and Motor Cortex.

Music can induce strong subjective experience of emotions, but it is debated whether these responses engage the same neural circuits as emotions elicited by biologically significant events. We examined the functional neural basis of music-induced emotions in a large sample (n = 102) of subjects who listened to emotionally engaging (happy, sad, fearful, and tender) pieces of instrumental music while their hemodynamic brain activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Ratings of the four categorical emotions and liking were used to predict hemodynamic responses in gen

The auditory cortex and tinnitus – a review of animal and human studies.

Tinnitus is the sound heard in the absence of physical sound sources external or internal to the body. Tinnitus never occurs in isolation; it typically develops after hearing loss, and not infrequently for losses at the higher frequencies not tested in clinical audiology. Furthermore, tinnitus is often accompanied by hyperacusis, i.e. increased loudness sensitivity, which may reflect the central gain change in the auditory system that occurs after hearing loss. I will first review the electrophysiological findings in the thalamus and cortex pertaining to animal research into tinnitus. This wil

Parvalbumin immunoreactivity in the auditory cortex of a mouse model of presbycusis.

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) affects ∼35% of humans older than sixty-five years. Symptoms of presbycusis include impaired discrimination of sounds with fast temporal features, such as those present in speech. Such symptoms likely arise because of central auditory system plasticity, but the underlying components are incompletely characterized. The rapid spiking inhibitory interneurons that co-express the calcium binding protein Parvalbumin (PV) are involved in shaping neural responses to fast spectrotemporal modulations. Here, we examined cortical PV expression in the C57bl/6 (C57) mo

Auditory responses in the visual cortex of neonatally enucleated rats.

A number of studies on humans and animals have demonstrated better auditory abilities in blind with respect to sighted subjects and have tried to define the mechanisms through which this compensation occurs. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to examine the participation of primary visual cortex (V1) to auditory processing in early enucleated rats. Here we show, using gaussian noise bursts, that about a third of the cells in V1 responded to auditory stimulation in blind rats and most of these (78%) had ON-type responses and low spontaneous activity. Moreover, they were distributed th

Neural representations of own-voice in the human auditory cortex.

We have a keen sensitivity when it comes to the perception of our own voices. We can detect not only the differences between ourselves and others, but also slight modifications of our own voices. Here, we examined the neural correlates underlying such sensitive perception of one's own voice. In the experiments, we modified the subjects' own voices by using five types of filters. The subjects rated the similarity of the presented voices to their own. We compared BOLD (Blood Oxygen Level Dependent) signals between the voices that subjects rated as least similar to their own voice and those they

Decoding of auditory and tactile perceptual decisions in parietal cortex.

Perceptual decision making is the process in which stimuli of a rich environment are reduced to a single choice. Parietal cortex is involved in many tasks that require perceptual decisions such as attentional focusing, categorization, and eventually response selection. While much work in both the human and monkey domains has investigated processes related to visual decision making, relatively little research has explored auditory and tactile perceptual decisions. As such, we wanted to know whether these regions also play a role in auditory and tactile decision making. Using functional magnetic

Task-specific reorganization of the auditory cortex in deaf humans.

The principles that guide large-scale cortical reorganization remain unclear. In the blind, several visual regions preserve their task specificity; ventral visual areas, for example, become engaged in auditory and tactile object-recognition tasks. It remains open whether task-specific reorganization is unique to the visual cortex or, alternatively, whether this kind of plasticity is a general principle applying to other cortical areas. Auditory areas can become recruited for visual and tactile input in the deaf. Although nonhuman data suggest that this reorganization might be task specific, hu

Blast-induced tinnitus and hyperactivity in the auditory cortex of rats.

Blast exposure can cause tinnitus and hearing impairment by damaging the auditory periphery and direct impact to the brain, which trigger neural plasticity in both auditory and non-auditory centers. However, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms of blast-induced tinnitus are still unknown. In this study, we induced tinnitus in rats using blast exposure and investigated changes in spontaneous firing and bursting activity in the auditory cortex (AC) at one day, one month, and three months after blast exposure. Our results showed that spontaneous activity in the tinnitus-positive group beg

Functional significance of the electrocorticographic auditory responses in the premotor cortex.

Other than well-known motor activities in the precentral gyrus, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have found that the ventral part of the precentral gyrus is activated in response to linguistic auditory stimuli. It has been proposed that the premotor cortex in the precentral gyrus is responsible for the comprehension of speech, but the precise function of this area is still debated because patients with frontal lesions that include the precentral gyrus do not exhibit disturbances in speech comprehension. We report on a patient who underwent resection of the tumor in the prec

Targeting the parahippocampal area by auditory cortex stimulation in tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: The final common pathway in tinnitus generation is considered to be synchronized auditory oscillatory hyperactivity. Intracranial auditory cortex stimulation (iACS) via implanted electrodes has been developed to treat severe cases of intractable tinnitus targeting this final common pathway, in the hope of being a panacea for tinnitus. However, not everybody responds to this treatment. OBJECTIVE: The electrical brain activity and functional connectivity at rest might determine who is going to respond or not to iACS and might shed light on the pathophysiology of auditory phantom sou

Role of auditory cortex in noise- and drug-induced tinnitus.

PURPOSE: To elucidate the role of auditory cortex in tinnitus. METHOD: Neurophysiological findings in cat auditory cortex following noise trauma or the application of salicylate and quinine, all expected to induce tinnitus, were reviewed. Those findings were interpreted in the context of what is expected from studies in humans, specifically in the brains of people with tinnitus. RESULTS: Tinnitus is an auditory percept to which several central structures in the auditory system may contribute. Because the central auditory system has both feed-forward connections and feedback connections, it c

Decoding of auditory cortex signals with a LAMSTAR neural network.

OBJECTIVES: Each neuron has a specific set of stimuli, which it preferentially responds to (the receptive field of the neuron). For implantable cortical prosthetic devices specific points of the cortex (or groups of neurons) have to be stimulated to create perceptions of sensory stimulus with specific attributes (such as frequency, temporal characteristics, etc). Such applications would need real time decoding of signals. Previously mathematical techniques, such as computing the receptive field (using electrophysiology data) and artificial neural networks (Kohonen network or SOM and back propa
