Remediation of Perceptual Deficits in Progressive Auditory Neuropathy: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a hearing disorder that affects neural activity in the VIIIth cranial nerve and central auditory pathways. Progressive forms have been reported in a number of neurodegenerative diseases and may occur as a result of both the deafferentiation and desynchronisation of neuronal processes. The purpose of this study was to describe changes in auditory function over time in a patient with axonal neuropathy and to explore the effect of auditory intervention. METHODS: We tracked auditory function in a child with progressive AN associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth

Study of auditory pathways in type 1 diabetes mellitus through brainstem auditory evoked potentials and contralateral acoustic reflex.

PURPOSE: To investigate the functionalities of the neural pathways through the auditory evoked potentials of the brainstem and the contralateral stapedial acoustic reflexes in normal-hearing individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus, in order to detect possible alterations in the central auditory pathways. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with a comparison group and a convenience sample, consisting of 32 individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus and 20 controls without the disease. All subjects had hearing thresholds within normal limits and type A tympanometric curves. The acoustic r

[Hearing loss and Alzheimer's disease].

Recent studies suggest that subjects with hearing loss are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. Hearing loss can be consecutive to presbycusis and/or to central auditory dysfunction. Standard audiometric measures (pure tone and speech intelligibility) allow the diagnosis of presbycusis. However, to demonstrate central auditory dysfunction, specific audiometric tests are needed such as noisy and/or dichotic tests. Actually, no consensus exists to investigate hearing loss in people with Alzheimer's disease though hearing loss may be an early manifestation of Alzheimer's disease. Until now

Diagnosis of retrocochlear and central vestibular disease by magnetic resonance imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging has become the study of choice for the diagnosis of retrocochlear and central vestibular disease. Three groups of lesions, each characterized by a specific site of origin, have been recognized: 1) petrous apex lesions such as congenital cholesteatomas and cholesterol granulomas involving the eighth cranial nerve within the internal auditory canal; 2) cerebellopontine angle tumors, mainly acoustic neuromas and meningiomas; and 3) CNS disease involving the brain stem and the central auditory and vestibular pathways such as tumors, multiple sclerosis, infarcts, and hemo

5XFAD mice show early-onset gap encoding deficits in the auditory cortex.

Early detection will be crucial for effective treatment or prevention of Alzheimer's disease. The identification and validation of early, noninvasive biomarkers is therefore key to avoiding the most devastating aspects of Alzheimer's disease. Measures of central auditory processing such as gap detection have recently emerged as potential biomarkers in both human patients and the 5XFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. Full validation of gap detection deficits as a biomarker will require detailed understanding of the underlying neuropathology, including which brain structures are involved and

Auditory system degeneration in Alzheimer's disease.

We observed a highly topographically specific and consistent pattern of degeneration in the auditory system of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Senile plaques (SP) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) were distributed throughout the ventral nucleus of the medial geniculate body (MGB) and the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC) in nine of nine AD patients. Adjacent nuclei within the MGB and IC were consistently spared. NFT and SP were also present in the primary auditory and the auditory association cortices. In all control tissues, there were neither SP nor NFT in any of the above s

Electrophysiological characterization of adult-onset Niemann-Pick type C disease.

In infantile and juvenile Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease electrophysiological studies have shown central (CNS) and peripheral (PNS) nervous system abnormalities. However, an extensive electrophysiological evaluation of CNS and PNS in adult form of NPC is still lacking. The aim of the study is to assess in adult-onset NPC disease the involvement of CNS and PNS by a multimodal electrophysiological approach. Three patients affected by adult form of NPC disease underwent electrophysiological evaluation including nerve conduction study (NCS), magnetic motor (MEPs), visual (VEPs), somatosensory (

Impaired prepulse inhibition in APP/PS1 mice is accompanied by substantial morphological changes in neurons of the central auditory system and hippocampus.

Auditory dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a non-cognitive feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We examined auditory processing and neuronal morphology in APPswe/PSEN1dE9 (APP/PS1) transgenic mice, a model of AD. Ten-month-old male APP/PS1 and wild-type (WT) littermates were tested for auditory thresholds using auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and for sensorimotor gating using prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle reflex. ABR thresholds did not differ between groups across tested frequencies (2-16 kHz), indicating preserved peripheral hearing. In contrast, APP/PS1 mice sh

Primary lymphoma of the internal auditory canal. Case report and review of the literature.

We report a rare case of a primary intracranial B cell lymphoma originating in the internal auditory canal. The clinical manifestations were indistinguishable from those of other, more common tumors of the same region. We achieved total gross tumor removal with preservation of the facial nerve. A detailed histologic examination and a systemic workup confirmed the primary nature of this tumor. To our knowledge, this is the second case reported in the literature of a primary malignant lymphoma originating in the internal auditory canal. This is the first instance that includes immunohistochemica

Protective effects of Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761 against noise trauma-induced hearing loss and tinnitus development.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and resulting comorbidities like subjective tinnitus are common diseases in modern societies. A substance shown to be effective against NIHL in an animal model is the Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761. Further effects of the extract on the cellular and systemic levels of the nervous system make it a promising candidate not only for protection against NIHL but also for its secondary comorbidities like tinnitus. Following an earlier study we here tested the potential effectiveness of prophylactic EGb 761 treatment against NIHL and tinnitus development in the Mongoli

Classification of Parkinson's disease with dementia using phase locking factor of event-related oscillations to visual and auditory stimuli.

Objective. In the last decades, machine learning approaches have been widely used to distinguish Parkinson's disease (PD) and many other neuropsychiatric diseases. They also speed up the clinicians and facilitate decision-making for several conditions with similar clinical symptoms. The current study attempts to detect PD with dementia (PDD) by event-related oscillations (EROs) during cognitive processing in two modalities, i.e. auditory and visual.Approach.The study was conducted to discriminate PDD from healthy controls (HC) using event-related phase-locking factors in slow frequency ranges (

[Auditory electrophysiology and retrolabyrinthine non-tumorous diseases]].

The authors present 55 cases of non-tumoral retrocochlear impairment, studied over the period between 1984 and 1988 in the ENT University Clinic of Bordeaux. Deafness was the most frequent symptom leading patients to come for consultation (89%). The stapedial reflex was pathological in 70% of the cases. No conclusion could be drawn from electro-occulography. Only the early auditory evoked responses made it possible to reach the diagnosis of retrocochlear impairment in 35% of the cases. Electrocochleography was required in 65% of the cases to establish the topographic diagnosis. The neuro-radio

Auditory-evoked response analysis in Brazilian patients with sickle cell disease.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the integrity of the peripheral and central auditory systems of sickle cell disease (SCD) patients, through electrophysiological evaluation utilizing auditory evoked potentials, and comparing the results obtained in SCD patients with individuals without SCD. A total of 80 individuals were evaluated: 40 SCD patients; and 40 healthy age- and sex-matched controls. Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was used to check neural integrity and electrophysiological thresholds, and cognitive potential (P300) to analyse the auditory selective attent

The postnatal growth of cochlear nucleus subdivisions and neuronal somata of the anteroventral cochlear nucleus in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).

We have analysed the postnatal volume increase of the cochlear nucleus subdivisions from birth to senescence in the Mongolian gerbil. All subdivisions showed the most prominent growth in the 2nd week of life before the onset of hearing on day 12. After the onset of hearing, the dorsal and the postero-ventral portion of the cochlear nucleus showed only a moderate degree of further growth. The antero-ventral cochlear nucleus, however, almost doubled in volume after the onset of hearing, reaching a maximum in 4-month-old animals. In ageing gerbils, we observed a small but systematic reduction of

[A case of auditory agnosia with the lesion of bilateral auditory radiation].

A 53-year-old man showed central auditory disturbance with recurrent cerebral hemorrhage. At his acute stage he had deafness and auditory anosognosia. Two or three months later, there was no deafness and auditory anosognosia, but he could not comprehend words, environmental sounds and music. Auditory brainstem responses showed no peripheral or brainstem damage, and the lesion of bilateral auditory radiation was detected by MRI. His auditory agnosia did not improve over one and a half year. There is no report like such permanent auditory agnosia with the lesion of bilateral subcortical temporal

The Physiological Bases of Hidden Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: Protocol for a Functional Neuroimaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Rodent studies indicate that noise exposure can cause permanent damage to synapses between inner hair cells and high-threshold auditory nerve fibers, without permanently altering threshold sensitivity. These demonstrations of what is commonly known as hidden hearing loss have been confirmed in several rodent species, but the implications for human hearing are unclear. OBJECTIVE: Our Medical Research Council-funded program aims to address this unanswered question, by investigating functional consequences of the damage to the human peripheral and central auditory nervous system that
