Effects of acute hypoxia on auditory pathway of Wistar albino rats.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Ischemia is insufficient blood flow to provide adequate oxygenation. In the present study, we aimed to show whether acute hypoxia has a critical oxygen value that may lead to the deterioration of cochlear function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Under general anesthesia, prehypoxic signal-to-noise ratios were determined by distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). The oxygen saturation (SaO2) values of rats were monitored with an oxygen saturation probe. Rats were injected with an extra dose of anesthetic agent, and SaO2 was reduced. DPOAE values in SaO2 100–90, 90–80, 80–70,

Auditory pathway encoding and neural plasticity in children with learning problems.

An inability to process auditory information, especially speech, characterizes many children with learning and attention problems. Our working hypothesis is that these speech-sound perception problems arise, at least in some cases, from faulty representation of the speech signal in central auditory centers. Preconscious neurophysiologic representation of sound structure by central auditory pathway neurons can be reflected by subcortical and cortical aggregate neural responses. These neurophysiologic responses can be modified by perceptual learning. Our research has shown that some children wit

Functional magnetic resonance imaging of human pontine auditory pathway.

The purpose of this study is to visualize brainstem auditory pathways by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Eighteen healthy volunteers (age 28 to 42 years) with normal hearing function underwent fMRI examination on a 1.5 Tesla imaging system (Philips, Best, The Netherlands) with periodic click stimulation. Blood oxygen level dependent images were obtained using a three-dimensional EPI sequence with shifted echo technique (principles of echo shifting with a train of observations). Control scans without click stimulation were obtained in the identical setting. Cross correlation activ

Central electrical stimulation of the auditory pathway in neurofibromatosis type 2.

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is a viable treatment option for patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) whom either vestibular schwannomas or the surgery used to remove them has rendered totally deaf. This device stimulates the central auditory pathways in a manner similar to the cochlear implant in individuals with a total hearing loss. A multichannel model with transcutaneous signal transmission is in use experimentally in both the United States and Europe. Of 14 patients implanted with the ABI in a European pilot study, 13 received auditory sensations at initial tuning. Surgical

Central Auditory Pathway Dysfunction in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Narrative Review of Auditory Brainstem Response Alterations.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly recognized as a disorder affecting both the peripheral and central nervous systems. Although diabetic neuropathy has traditionally been associated with peripheral nerve damage, accumulating evidence suggests that central auditory pathways are also vulnerable to chronic hyperglycaemia. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence regarding auditory brainstem response (ABR) abnormalities in adults with T2DM, with emphasis on their pathophysiological basis, characteristic electrophysiological alterations, clinical associations, and potential d

Spatiotemporal reconstruction of auditory steady-state responses to acoustic amplitude modulations: Potential sources beyond the auditory pathway.

Investigating the neural generators of auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), i.e., auditory evoked brain responses, with a wide range of screening and diagnostic applications, has been the focus of various studies for many years. Most of these studies employed a priori assumptions regarding the number and location of neural generators. The aim of this study is to reconstruct ASSR sources with minimal assumptions in order to gain in-depth insight into the number and location of brain regions that are activated in response to low- as well as high-frequency acoustically amplitude modulated sig

Assessment of Auditory Pathways Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

AIM: The aim of our study was to determine whether the diffusion properties of the auditory pathways alter between patients with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and the healthy subjects. DTI can well demonstrate FA and ADC changes in auditory tracts and it may be a guide to identify the candidates for hearing loss among NF1 children. METHODS: The study population consisted of 43 patients with NF1 and 21 healthy controls. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was used to measure apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) values from lemniscus lateralis, colliculus inferior, co

The frontoparietal multiple demand network interacts with the dual pathways in auditory working memory.

The frontoparietal multiple demand (MD) network has been proposed as a control network that regulates processing demands while enabling goal-directed actions. This study tested the MD network account in auditory working memory (AWM) and identified its functional role and relationship with the dual pathways model in AWM, where segregation of function was based on the sound domain. Forty-one healthy young adults performed an n-back task consisting of an orthogonal combination of the sound domain (spatial versus nonspatial) and cognitive operation (low load versus high load). Functional connectiv

A Preliminary Investigation Report on Using Probabilistic Fiber Tractography to Track Human Auditory Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion tensor imaging is currently the only noninvasive way to map subcortical white matter tractography. Radiologists and neurologists often fail to reconstruct the complex auditory pathways when applying the most commonly used approach, deterministic fiber tracking, as this method is limited in spatial and angular resolution. A different fiber-tracking method involving a probabilistic approach could partly compensate for these limitations. We investigated efficiency and potential usefulness of probabilistic fiber tracking in depicting human auditory pathways in healthy individ

Beyond Trauma: A Multiple Pathways Approach to Auditory Hallucinations in Clinical and Nonclinical Populations.

That trauma can play a significant role in the onset and maintenance of voice-hearing is one of the most striking and important developments in the recent study of psychosis. Yet the finding that trauma increases the risk for hallucination and for psychosis is quite different from the claim that trauma is necessary for either to occur. Trauma is often but not always associated with voice-hearing in populations with psychosis; voice-hearing is sometimes associated with willful training and cultivation in nonclinical populations. This article uses ethnographic data among other data to explore th

Optogenetic stimulation of cochlear neurons activates the auditory pathway and restores auditory-driven behavior in deaf adult gerbils.

Cochlear implants partially restore hearing via direct electrical stimulation of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). However, spread of excitation from each electrode limits spectral coding. We explored the use of optogenetics to deliver spatially restricted and cell-specific excitation in the cochlea of adult Mongolian gerbils. Adeno-associated virus carrying the gene encoding the light-sensitive calcium translocating channelrhodopsin (CatCh) was injected into the cochlea of adult gerbils. SGNs in all cochlea turns showed stable and long-lasting CatCh expression, and electrophysiological recordin

Interaction of auditory and pain pathways: Effects of stimulus intensity, hearing loss and opioid signaling.

Moderate intensity sounds can reduce pain sensitivity (i.e., audio-analgesia) whereas intense sounds can induce aural pain, evidence of multisensory interaction between auditory and pain pathways. To explore auditory-pain pathway interactions, we used the tail-flick (TF) test to assess thermal tail-pain sensitivity by measuring the latency of a rat to remove its tail from 52 °C water. In Experiment 1, TF latencies were measured in ambient noise and broadband noise (BBN) presented from 80 to 120 dB SPL. TF latencies gradually increased from ambient to 90 dB SPL (audio-analgesia), but then decli

Maturational delay in the brainstem auditory pathway of very preterm babies with apnoea.

AIMS: To assess the maturational status of the brainstem auditory pathway in babies with apnoea of prematurity (AOP) at 33-34 weeks of postmenstrual age (PMA), an important time landmark at which AOP is resolved in most cases. STUDY DESIGN: Compare brainstem auditory maturation between very preterm babies with AOP and those without AOP (non-AOP) at the same PMA 33-34 weeks to define differences. RESULTS: The AOP group showed significantly longer latencies of waves III and V latency than the non-AOP group (p < 0.05 and 0.01). The I-V interval in the AOP group was significantly longer than in
