Improved electrically evoked auditory steady-state response thresholds in humans.

Electrically evoked auditory steady-state responses (EASSRs) are EEG potentials in response to periodic electrical stimuli presented through a cochlear implant. For low-rate pulse trains in the 40-Hz range, electrophysiological thresholds derived from response amplitude growth functions correlate well with behavioral T levels at these rates. The aims of this study were: (1) to improve the correlation between electrophysiological thresholds and behavioral T levels at 900 pps by using amplitude-modulated (AM) and pulse-width-modulated (PWM) high-rate pulse trains, (2) to develop and evaluate the

The acute effects of tetrahydrocannabinol on auditory threshold and frequency resolution in human subjects.

AIMS: The study was designed to investigate the acute effects of ingested tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on auditory function. METHODS: Eight male subjects (aged 22-30 years), who had previous experience of cannabis use, took part in this study. They performed air conduction pure tone audiometry in both ears over 0.5-8 kHz. A simple test of frequency selectivity by detecting a 4-kHz tone under two masking noise conditions was also carried out in one ear. Three test sessions at weekly intervals were carried out, at the start of which they ingested a capsule containing either placebo, or 7.5 or 15

Effect of bilateral auditory cortex lesions on absolute thresholds in Japanese macaques.

1. The behavioral audiograms of four Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) were assessed before and after receiving two-stage bilateral lesions of auditory cortex. Thresholds were assessed for each ear with the use of insertion earphones. 2. The bilateral lesions resulted in a large initial hearing loss followed by partial recovery that left the animals with a permanent hearing loss in both ears. 3. The initial hearing loss consisted of a total insensitivity to sound in the ear contralateral to the second lesion with limited hearing in the other ear. However, the animal with the most complete les

Speech evoked auditory brainstem response and gap detection threshold in middle-aged individual.

This study aimed at characterizing the gap detection threshold (GDT) and speech evoked ABR (SABR) in younger and middle-aged individuals. Two groups of subjects were participated in the study which includes 15 young adults in the age range of 15-25 years and 15 middle-aged individuals in the age range of 40-60 years. SABR with stimulus/da/of 40 ms and GDT were investigated on both groups. For SABR, Mann-Whitney U test revealed that ageing has significantly adverse effect on the encoding of F1 and F2 at brainstem level. However, no significant effect of ageing (till middle age) on the encoding

Auditory threshold evaluation by distortion-product oto-acoustic emissions using decision support system.

Distortion-product oto-acoustic emissions (DPOEs) were measured in 102 normal-hearing and hearing-impaired ears to examine the sensibility, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of this test in a real clinical setting using two decision support systems. The first model only considered the presence or the absence of DPOEs in response to a 52 dB SPL stimulation intensity. The second model used two consecutive tests: i) the presence or the absence of DPOEs in response to a 52 dB SPL stimulation intensity, and ii) evaluation of the slope of each DPOE input-output fun

An Exploratory Study of Auditory Brainstem Responses and Hearing Thresholds in Essential Tremor.

Background and Objectives: Essential tremor (ET) is the most prevalent movement disorder, yet its neurophysiological basis remains incompletely understood. Emerging evidence indicates that ET may involve non-motor manifestations, including auditory dysfunction. Given the anatomical convergence of tremor-related and auditory pathways at the brainstem level, electrophysiological assessment of the auditory system may provide insights into ET pathophysiology. This study aimed to evaluate auditory pathway function in patients with essential tremor using conventional audiometry, brainstem auditory e

Estimating hearing thresholds in rodents using the parallel auditory brainstem response.

ABR thresholds are traditionally measured for one sound frequency at a time, but a new approach, the parallel ABR (pABR), has recently been developed. The pABR allows thresholds to be measured for multiple frequencies simultaneously and has been shown to be more efficient than the traditional approach for humans. This study explored the applicability of the pABR approach for threshold measurement in gerbils. The basic properties of the estimated ABRs were analyzed and the dependence of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the reliability of measured thresholds on the number of trials was assess

The Auditory Steady-State Response and the Relationship between Electrophysiological and Behavioural Thresholds.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between behavioural thresholds as measured by pure tone audiometry and electrophysiological thresholds measured by the Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) in children with normal hearing and sensorineural hearing loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After being assessed, 45 children of both sexes, ranging in age from 5 to 15, were split into four groups: 10 with moderate to moderately severe sensorineural hearing loss (G2M); 10 with steeply sloping sensorineural hearing loss (G2D); 10 with profound and severe sensorineural hearing loss (G2S); and 15

A novel Android app to evaluate and enhance auditory and tactile temporal thresholds.

With this work, we introduce a novel Android app designed to monitor and enhance auditory and tactile temporal sensitivity. To assess the app's reliability, we tested its technical performance evaluating stimuli production's accuracy (i.e., onset, offset, and duration of stimulation). To validate the app with participants we generated temporal intervals, using either sounds or vibratory stimuli, by implementing two versions of a Two-Alternative Forced-Choice (2AFC) task. Auditory and tactile temporal sensitivity of 12 participants was evaluated using this procedure. To investigate whether temp

Psychoacoustic analyses of cochlear mechanisms in tinnitus patients with normal auditory thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is often related to auditory dysfunction. We hypothesised that, among individuals with normal auditory thresholds, the mechanism of frequency selectivity might differ between subjects with and without tinnitus. Our objective was to identify any differences between normal-hearing individuals with tinnitus and those without in terms of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and threshold-equalising noise (TEN) test results. DESIGN: We determined PTCs and performed the TEN test. STUDY SAMPLE: We evaluated 57 individuals, 16 with bilateral tinnitus (tinnitus-group) and 41 withou

Confirming pure-tone thresholds by auditory brainstem response in the geriatric population.

BACKGROUND: The aged people seeking otological consultation tend to increase for the purpose of applying for hearing disability certificate. When the subjective pure-tone thresholds (PTTs) are unreliable due to patient incooporation, the objective click auditory brainstem response (ABR) is used to confirm the hearing thresholds. In this study, we assess the accuracy of ABR thresholds in the aged and determine the "ABR confirmation criteria" for normal hearing and hearing handicap. METHODS: This is a prospective study. ABR thresholds were compared with pure-tone thresholds (PTTs) in 100 ears o

[Auditory thresholds in young Italians from 18-19 years of age].

The aim of the study was to assess the state of hearing levels in young Italian subjects via an epidemiological study, and also, by means of a questionnaire, to assess the attitude of young people to music, how they listen to music and how they perceive the risk of noise-induced hearing damage. The sample studied consisted of 391 youths undergoing their first medical examination for military service. The hearing threshold was assessed by means of a semiclinical tonal audiometry with sound-proof earphones calibrated to ISO Standard 389 following the method of ISO Standard 6189. At the end of th

Auditory enhancement at the absolute threshold of hearing and its relationship to the Zwicker tone.

Auditory enhancement describes an improvement in the detection of a tonal signal in a broad-band masker with a spectral gap at the signal frequency if the signal is delayed in its onset relative to the masker. This auditory enhancement may be based on an increase of the effective signal level instead of a decline in the effective masker level. In order to evaluate whether this signal enhancement also exists at the threshold of hearing, we measured the absolute threshold for pure-tone pulses of different frequencies with and without preceding band-rejected noise. Such noise also causes the sens

Behavioral measures of auditory thresholds in developing tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri).

The development of hearing in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) was tested through behavioral measures in the range of 0.3-60 kHz from the first postnatal thresholds detectable through to those of weanlings. The onset of hearing was defined using unconditioned startle responses, while, later on, pinna reflexes and head movements were used as behavioral indicators of sound perception. Startle responses could be evoked from day 16 after birth (DAB) onwards, indicating that the hearing system is capable of transferring airborne sound, although no reactions to tones were recorded at this age. The fir

This work is on relation existing between the objective threshold of auditory brainstem responses in adults and those existing in the different frequencies of audiometry pure-tone, in order to make the audiometry from the objective threshold of the ABR, from the subjective threshold to the click, and the type of hearing loss in question. Such results can be transferred to children, and starting from the ABR in children we could guess their probable audiometric profiles. On that purpose we have studied the auditory brainstem responses and the pure-tone audiometry in 168 ears suffering from hear

The relationship and interdependence of auditory thresholds, proposed behavioural measures of hidden hearing loss, and physiological measures of auditory function.

OBJECTIVES: Standard diagnostic measures focus on threshold elevation but hearing concerns may occur independently of threshold elevation - referred to as "hidden hearing loss" (HHL). A deeper understanding of HHL requires measurements that locate dysfunction along the auditory pathway. This study aimed to describe the relationship and interdependence between certain behavioural and physiological measures of auditory function that are thought to be indicative of HHL. DESIGN: Data were collected on a battery of behavioural and physiological measures of hearing. Threshold-dependent variance was
